Do you think Panasonic will upgrade the P2 store soon ?

I'm about to buy two 8gb P2 cards and was debating buying the P2 store.
I have about given upon the Cineporter as I have a project in October and cant wait any longer. I have the P2 Genie and laptop and think I might wait until an upgrade of the P2 store.
Just wondering if anybody feels this will be sometime soon ?

I would think that if they update it this year, it would be at IBC next week......
Whatever you do I would wait and see if anything new is announced.

Some people are cracking the P2 Store open and replacing the hard drive. If they are successful, you might consider that approach. Search for it.

Officially Panasonic will not be at the IBC next week. I have the feeling there will not be an update of the P2 store soon. Offload of P2 cards to a pc or direct recording to a PC/mac seems to be the only sollution at the moment if you want more than 60 GB.

Honestly, it seems a lot smarter just to get a laptop with P2 genie since it's cheaper and you can get a bigger HD than the P2 store could offer.

I went that way for a while... but certain conditions aren't easy on a laptop... Like running around a dirty dusty racetrack... and in a rock club... A laptop attracts attention and needs power.. and is just screaming for attention. The P2store is rugged.. small and easy to work with.

I believe I read that the P2store is able to be updated with a new HD. Would be sweet to put a new drive in there..... but I'll wait for the tech bird-dogs to try it first.

Yeah, you can supposedly replace the drive with a bigger drive yourself... but what I'd really love to see is a little lcd screen that shows you what's on the drive.. I still don't understand what those lcd lights mean... even though I now trust the p2 store to do it's job right, i'm stilll a paranoid about erasing cards while i'm out in the field... a little lcd screen like on the ipod nano that shows me thumbnail pictures of what each clip looks like would do wonders...

and yes, i would highly suggest the the p2 store over the laptop idea, because there are a lot of situations where you can't break out a laptop & hard drive... such as shooting a live concert or run and gun reality tv shoots...

I guess it depends upon what you're shooting, but I'm shooting 24pN and I can get 2 hours on the P2 Store and have never wiped it and had it absolutely full. It'd be one long day's shooting to fill the Store at 24pN. But I'm interested exclusively in film, and not looking at only 4 minutes from a 4 gig card, or 8 from an 8 gig, with the wasted space before the pull-down. I'm using the P2 Log in the field to look at the clips in the Store before I move them to the scratch drive connected to my laptop. A usb-powered external hd would make it pretty easy to empty the Store through a laptop without additional power issues.

I'm sure you can do that but I believe the stock hard drive is engineered in such a way that hard drive's head lifts when movement is detected. This is so no damage and data loss hits the drive. I don't think they've pefected the technology to surpass 60GB. Or perhaps they have and it is about to come out?

I believe the P2 store just parks the HD heads when movement is detected, like the macbook Pro which also feature a sudden motion sensor.
The Park command is a basic feature of 2.5" Laptop drives, the special thing is the motion sensor which is an external component.
