Do I have to render my footage on FCP to edit it.

I'm a new HVX owner and just shot my first P2 footage last weekend. When I imported it into FCP and dragged the clips to the timeline it requires that I render it to watch. It will take forever to render 2 hours of 720/24pn footage just to view it.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Aaron

Whenever you nave to render, your video footage attributes do not match your sequence settings.

Start over and elect the DVCProHD 720/24p preset and report back

Do you have FCP 5.1x and a Powerbook? If so, put the P2 card into the slot and click File menu/Import/Panasonic P2. It will copy any or all selected clips at about 1 GB/minute and simultaneously convert them to QT format. No rendering will be required after that.

Perhaps Ted is on to a possible incorrect import process.

I take it you used the import p2 volume command in the edit menu and then used the resulting modal dialog box to import each of clips?

I can't wait until FCP 6 comes out and gets rid of this nonsense.

Currently you have to choose an Easy Setup that matches your footage, DELETE the current SEQUENCE 1, and create a new sequence. Stupid. With FCP 6, the first clip you drop into the timeline make the timeline settings conform to that clip.

Brilliant.

Well that could be a blessing and a curse! I can just imagine the next set of posts will go something like this.

I have a bunch of footage that I shot HD but my show starts with a clip that is SD 4x 3. Now my whole show is SD 4x3, what did I do wrong?

Too true.

To the OP:

FCP is a non destructive editing tool. The way this works is, if you make changes to the media (as people often do in an editing program,) FCP stores a render file to keep your originals pristine. So... if your reference clip doesn't match the sequence, FCP won't just shove your media into the sequence (which would be changing it) without making a render.
