DJI Osmo Handheld 4K Camera and 3-Axis Gimbal

Used mine a bit today in a industrial environment. It's super easy - I like that. I'll look at footage and report back tomorrow.

OSMO tutorial how to "UNBOX" the OSMO. LOL! Seriously, its an official video tutorial. And it got 2 parts! :D

"first, remove the tape..." LOL!

Hahaha! What a maroon!

That was just wrong on so many levels.

I love the way corporations always BLOW IT embarrassingly when they try to emulate things that developed organically out on the web-o-sphere.
This "unboxing" video is a PERFECT example! LMAO!

But- it makes for a great tutorial: "WHAT NOT TO DO WITH AN UNBOXING VIDEO"!

That poor actor. Thought he was going to get a gig that would HELP his resume...

looks pretty good for 1080@ 60fps. He lets you download also. I wonder if they will let you dial back sharpening and saturation in future firmware

Yes. The main element of a real unboxing video is the feeling of, “Wow, this is like Christmas. I just got a gift, and I’m really excited to open it.” You can feel the excitement. The person picks up the instruction manual, says “here’s the instruction manual,” and throws it aside with disdain. The unboxer is quickly moving through all the things that don’t really matter so as to get to the one or two things that really do matter. We get caught up in their enthusiasm, no matter how cheesy.

When an advertiser takes over this format, it reeks of lack of authenticity.

I got mine today. I'm very impressed with the design. For what I wanted, a quick tool to get motion in my corporate b-roll and events, it is going to be great. A couple of things to be aware of:
While you have control over iso, shutter speed, and limited WB, you do not have control over picture profile.
Max iso is 3200 with a fixed f/2.8 lens.
The fan is loud on the camera. You will not be recording audio while using this thing unless it is offboard sound at an event.
The iphone software has some bugs, but the screen refresh rate is generally without stutters and the software includes zebras and histogram.

I guess this looks fair FOR THE PRICE.
Can the fisheye be reduced on this camera easily? Have they published a de-fish value to flatten it out - like the GoPro de-fish?

The X5 I think is really going to be a killer...but this footage still only seems impressive by camera-phone standards to me.

The lens isn't a fisheye, but it is fairly wide. The distortion you are seeing is just from the camera man being about a foot from the players. The only fix is to stand back and shoot in 4K and then crop the image.

The fisheye is very minimal if at all, and compared to the go pro it's night and day. The video above you speak of is 1080 p the Osmo also shoots 4K.
Sure the X5 will be better it's $2,199 for the gimbal & camera only what do you want for $649 it's a b roll camera that gets the job done at a reasonable price?

Does anybody know if the x5 has a fan built into the camera? Either DJI needs to enable the ability to turn than fan off on the X3 when shooting for short bursts, or they need to release a camera that has the option. The fan is not a deal breaker for me because I would rarely wish to use sound for the type of shoots I would use with this camera, but the fan does significantly reduce the uses for this camera. Still for $649, I feel like the Osmo is pretty amazing.

I love my Osmo! However, I still see a place in my kit for the glidecam, mostly for low lit scenes or events where a dSLR is needed for better image quality.

Im sure when they finally get around to adding the x5r and x5 functionality to the osmo they will have to add more features like log etc.. I am buying an x5r and osmo when its available. Ive said it before but barring a huge IQ issue this has the potential to really remove a lot of gear/time from the equation. Raw sensor data takes away alot of question marks when it comes to producing a exciting image and makes the osmo a real breakthrough.

cpreston, thanks for the update and feedback. What would you think of using the Osmo for a walk and talk with talent approximately 5-10' away from camera, wearing a wireless lavaliere? Would the fan still be too instrusive? Is the fan on all of the time or just when it heats up? What was the ambient temperature where you were shooting? Wonder if it comes on if shooting in mild or cold temps or is it just on all of the time?

If it is an external with enough ambient noise like in a city, the fan will be covered. In any normal environment where sound is critical, the fan will be intrusive even at 5 to 10' away. The fan is much louder than any fan I've heard on a camera before, including Red. The fan comes on within about 10 seconds of turning on the camera. It appears to be temperature sensitive in terms of when it comes on, but the camera gets hot very quickly in any normal ambient temperature. If you used the camera while skiing then the fan might not turn on, but it is not the camera where you can try to let it cool down in order to get a shot where the fan will not turn on in the middle of a shot.
