DJI Osmo Handheld 4K Camera and 3-Axis Gimbal

might just be this particular vimeo upload but wow the IQ looks no better than a modern smartphone. was expecting more especially since the lighting in these arenas is very good, lights for TV good.

not good to hear about the fan noise as well.

That's just the way the camera looks. The compression artifacts are pretty noticeable no matter the light. I saw a comparison video online between the X3 and iphone 6s and the X3 was substantially better, so there's that. The 1080p and 4K look almost the same due to the compression issues.

yes, from what I've seen the X3 looks much better...of course for obvious reasons. just a bit surprised by the stock OSMO but still for the price not bad if you compare to a go pro 4k with a $300 gimbal i guess.

I did a quick test in good light with movement and compared the image to my C100. I do not think there will be any issue with matching the footage with my C100 for the way I intend to use it. With movement in decent light and low ISO and a 180 degree shutter angle, most of the compression issues and sharpening aren't nearly as noticeable as they are in the example video posted at the basketball game. I wish there was a way to bring down sharpening, but it appears that you have to upgrade to the X-5 to get any real control over the picture. But for $650 and how stupid easy the OSMO is to use, I don't feel like I can complain.

One other thing, you should test whether 4K is actually the best settings before assuming it's the best to use. It appears that 4K leads to the worst of the compression issues and 1080p generally looks much more organic. I also can't see the difference in resolution on my 4K monitors.

Brandon, nice video of your girl. Any observations about the fan noise and 4k vs. 1080 looks? Mine arrives tomorrow.

Well mine arrived Friday, so I did some test with it over the weekend and what I have discovered is that for film narrative in most situation it will be completely useless do to the noise of the motor and fan, though I must say it does shoot nice footage for what it is.

Using separate audio like a fostex or similar audio recorder you may in some situation be able to pull it off, but I will stick with my steadicam for that. Still useful for some things where I don't really need the audio, but I find it strange that most of the reviews do not talk about it.

It's probably because most of the reviews are based on using the Osmo in the field, rather than on set. A lot of the early adopters are drone operators, as well... Compared to a quad copter, the Osmo is probably whisper quiet ;)

Most people will probably be using it for b-roll and field Photography where sync sound isn't critical. Like on mountain tops. It's windy at 12,000 feet, but if it's had an Osmo I could have gotten some 4k footage from the summit of Mt Adams.

If they can just get ride of that fan noise then it would be usable with a fostex because the only reason you hear the motors is because the mic is internal, I doubt you would hear the motors with separate audio recorded from an outside source their not nearly as loud as the fan.

The big question for me is whether the x5 has a fan. I've looked at images and I can't see fan vents, so they DJI might just be using a heat sink. I don't think I would want to use the X3 for narrative with dialogue anyway as the camera is basically set for inifinity focus and the look of camera is too much of a compromise. The x5, however, has options for different picture profiles and focus control built into the app. The motors themselves are not too loud, so if the x5 doesn't have a fan I would definitely pick it up and keep the x3 for quick b-roll and the times that I want to strap the Osmo to car or something.

Exactly my thoughts.

Am I reading this right, the camera is 60/mbs 4:2:0 at 4K? Seems a little expensive for a $2400 kit. Considering the GoPro 4 has the exact same 4K codec, added with a small 3-axis gimbal, comes to around $600.

I know the X5 has a bigger sensor, but what a terrible codec to put in a camera like this. Even at 100/mbs 4K there is some noticeable compression, I can only imagine what it looks like trying to grade footage at 60/mbs 4k.

Yeah, I was expecting the x5 to have a better codec. The x3's codec is pretty bad, and the compression artifacts are glaringly bad in every test video I've seen so far... but it's hard to tell how much of that is due to being hosted on YouTube, since YouTube compression is quite bad.

I got mine Saturday. Overall, it's going to be very useful for quick stuff and definitely will be coming with me on every trip for travel stuff.

The fan is noisy as hell. Not sure this'll be an issue for me... Probably not most of the time.

Build quality is awesome. Battery life is poor and spare batts aren't out yet.

Camera is the same as the Inspire X3. I knew what I was getting there. I'll probably dump a GoPro at some point because I doubt I'll use them much anymore. Being able to mount this thing and get stabilized video and pant/tilt control remotely is pretty awesome.

For the price, I can see it being very useful.

Yeah the compression is awful for 4K and HD. The footage works for quick cuts or masters, but for any kind of jig/crane type shots it's unusable.

It will look just fine, especially for the web. Where 99% of our stuff ends up anyway.

I suppose using it in actual film production will have to wait until I can afford an x5r then. Unless DJI plans on updating the codecs to something less terrible, I'd call the x5 a waste of money, and the x3 only worth it because it's so inexpensive. Even so, the glaring compression artifacts are making me hesitant, because what's the point if the footage isn't usable for anything but youtube?

He also has his original 4K grade on vimeo for download:

I think for b-roll web based work, the X3 is more than fine. Shooting at 1080p or the intermediate codec also helps. Much of the problem seems to be related to the in camera sharpening, but I've seen worse.
