DIY IndieSlider...

From what I see concerning the direct attachment of the RAIL to the TRIPOD presents a problem. In time it will loosen up to the point of the rail being too loose to use, for these reasons.

1: the thickness of the rail being tapped is too small [ along with the length of the screw] to give needed support.
2: the rail is made of aluminum which is very soft and the threaded hole will eventually elongate with the dipping motion when the camera is at it's furthest point on the rail.

Can anyone confirm my thinking on this?

No.
I see you're new here...so Welcome! I know this thread is REALLY long, but I assure you, in it's few years of existence we've cover pretty much everything.
Please take a few days and read through it! :D

I've been using my original slider for the past three years and have never had a problem with the center hole stripping.
I recommed the solid rail now, which gives you many more threads. The pre-drilled rail just makes the project that much easier.

There is no 'dipping' if the rail is securely screwed on the tripod...or if you use a QR plate.

Build one, buy one from me or anyone else....but get one... you'll love it!

Anyone know how long the rail is that is included with that package?

Keep reading... 1000mm
Technical Details

  • Adjustable clearance to add or remove drag (use 1.5mm Allen wrench)
  • Extra bolts to prevent misalignment included
  • WS-10-40 Guide rail measuring 1,000mm
  • 1,079lb Static load rating / 2.8lb assembled system
  • Lubrication-free, smooth and quiet movement

Igus US (Providence, RI) isn't stocking this... stock.

I'm curious as to why they don't seem to offer the 60mm rail in cutout, but they make an 80, 40, and 30.

Igus, Inc in Rhode Island says they are in communication with Europe about stocking these products.

Exactly, and I've been trying to get an answer from Europe as to why they would neglect the 16-60 when it is the stock of choice for many in the US.

Once you start using a slider, it will become a regular tool on shoots.

Hell yeah. I don't go anywhere without it now that I've been using it for 2 weeks. It's especially great here in New York City where I do most of my travelling via the subway, so not having to worry about having to drive to a gig only to deal with horrendous parking, just so I could carry my dolly to a shoot... that's remarkable right there. And now I just adjust my shots so it looks like I'm using a dolly. I'm a HUGE fan of the camera movements using a dolly, but damn, the slider gets yoru through some rogh spots and with enough planning you can get identical shots to a dolly.. except for those really long shots, but it's all a matter of planning anyway.

for the price of the zazaslider complete kit id probably spend alittle more and get the danadolly. whats the max weight for the zaza?

This isn't a dolly... it's a slider. WAY more portable, easy to set-up & cheap. Build your own and it's even cheaper.
As far as the weight, I believe the 16-60mm rail I use is rated for a static load of 1,888 lbs. It can easily handle rigs of 50 lbs.

i guess when portability, price, and ease of setup are needed than i see your point. I have never played with either a slider or dolly to argue or comment about how they function. I will pruchase one , or maybe both at some point.

Thanks for the info ZAZACAST!!

Cool! I have both, but only use the dolly and track for long dollies.....or to dolly my crane.
Each tool has it's purpose.

I’ve had my parts for a while but have been looking for a drill press so I can make a nice vertical hole in the plate.
Well, I haven’t been able to find one so I went out, bought a $40 drill guide and a Tap Screw set and did it on my own.
It certainly ain’t the fanciest one in this thread, but here it is with a 701HDV head:
