DIY IndieSlider...

Anyone have tried their rig with a 7D and the manfrotto 190XDB? I'm just getting ready to order everything, and questioning if it will all be to heavy on that tripod.

Thanks

I've used the 190XDB many times...see the first post, that's a 190XDB.
Shot "Graveyard Slide" with that tripod and my DVX100b, no problem.

I would recommend a few sandbags and I wouldn't go too high with that tripod. Support the tripod with your other hand when sliding. Keep the legs as wide as you can.

So in other words, if I didn't want to worry about bringing sandbags with me on shoots, should I go with something like the Manfrotto 055XDB which has a capacity of 15 lbs.

also can someone explain the difference between the 16-60 rails and the 10-80.

Thanks for your help I apologize for my lack of knowledge here.

I know you're new here, but you really should take the time to read through the whole thread (most of these questions have been answered).

And check here too: www.zazaslider.com

Sandbags are for safety. I would still recommend a tripod with a spreader. I use a Manfrotto 3046 and carry 3, 5lb. ankle weights that I attach to the spreaders. I can slide right to the end of the 1000mm rail with a DVX100b, RR M2 35mm adapter, lens and follow focus, no problems.

Here it is without the sandbags (ankle weights).

As far as the the other question:

16-60mm rail- the 'tube' that the carriage rides on is 16mm and the whole rail is 60mm wide

10-80mm rail- the 'tube' that the carriage ridea on is 10mm and the whole rail is 80mm wide.

That's it, first number tells you the diameter of the rail and the second number tells you the width of the rail.

Cheers!

Haha nice leaf in the background...

Actually... it's not a leaf. That is part of a piece I did years back.
It's called "Party Rock". (so, I guess the leaf makes sense!)

The Party Rock is found high in the Helderberg Mountains in Upstate NY.
It's a hugh rock, that fell off the face of the mountain and it's perfectly flat on top and give you a party area of about 40'x30'. Yes... the good odl days!

Those are natural water-washed (and very smooth) stones from around the "Party Rock" glued to the surface of the canvas.

Here's the complete piece:

Sorry, I've read through some of these discussions but I dont have the time to go thru 243 pages right now.

First off, thanks Zaza for this great DIY. I got my materials in the mail yesterday and had the slider completed within an hour.

I'm trying to get it set with my tripod, Sachtler DV 6 SB but the fluid had has a long male 3/8 bolt that attaches to the legs (75mm bowl) I'm figure I'm going to go with the 701HDV to mount on the carriage but I'm looking for ideas for connecting the slider to the tripod.

Any help is appreciated, and again, thanks for the great DIY, can't wait to use it!

At the bottom of the first post: Manfrotto by Bogen Imaging 325N Video Head Adapter Bowl- for 75 mm and 100 mm Heads

I think that's what you want....if I'm understanding your post correctly?

Sorry if I was vague in the description. My hopes were to use my Sachtler legs with the Manfrotto 701 fluid head. My issue is not with connecting the carriage to the head, it's connecting the legs to the slider.

Here is how the DV 6 SB head is connected.

So it would be a situation like this:

I suppose I could just get a 3/8" hex bolt thats about 2" long to go into the stem from the top of the slider but it would have to be fully threaded. I thought a bolt like this would work but obviously it won't fit through the hole once it gets past the thread.

I just didn't know if there were any other options to explore.

Hope this explanation makes more sense.

I finally put my slider to use. It took several attempts to get a long smooth push. The rail seems to have fast and slow spots, and I got the best results after holding the fluid head firmly and pushing while having a finger from my other hand touching the rail to get feedback on the speed.

I'm guessing adding the other 4 bolts to hold the carriage sliders straight will help. Thanks again for the great DIY project.

Got my 700mm version up and running finally. I attached a quick release plate on the bottom of the rail so it could attach to the velbon dv7000 ph-368 fluid head. But i did notice that as im gliding back and forth, there is some slight tilting, as it seems the fluid head can't take the wait of the glideblock, tripod head and 7d combined. Looks as if im gonna just have to take the other fluid head off the legs, and replace it with a different quick release adapter system. Anybody got a cheap, EFFECTIVE, solution??

Ok, my son was using the slider and used it on the street. What's the proper way to clean the rail system and the slider?

Spray a little "Pledge" (furniture polish) on a clean, dry cloth and wipe the rail down...then repeat with a clean, dry cloth!
Works great and won't damage the bearings.

Any advantages to using the 80mm wide track in lieu of the 60? Also, has anyone used the new aluminum track with the cut outs to lower weight. http://www.igus.eu/wpck/default.aspx?Pagename=N10_6_08_W_Fuehrungschienen&CL=DE-en

Depends. Are you talking about the 10-80mm or the 20-80mm rail?
Having played with all the different sizes, I felt the 16-60mm was the best all-around size.

The rail with the cut outs really doesn't make that much difference in weight.
