DIY IndieSlider...

I just send Igus (EU) a quote request for the

WSQ-06-40-CAM-1000
WSQ-06-40-CAM-500
WSQ-06-30-CAM-500

I also asked if there is some reason that they do not offer this in WSQ-10-60 stock as it seems to be the preferred stock here.

The product page says 30% weight reduction.
I guess with a really long piece of rail it might make a difference...but when you're talking 1000mm...doesn't make much of a difference.
A 1000mm rail & 100mm carriage only weighs about 6 lbs.

I come up with about 4.5 lbs for a 1000mm slider (60mm rail):

2.8 lbs. for every 1000mm of rail
2.2 lbs. for the carriage assembly

So this cut-out product (if it was offered in the 60mm size, which it appears not to be) would reduce the overall weight of a 1000mm slider by .84 lbs.

Taking close to half a pound off of my 500mm shorty might be useful to me.

I'm more interested in learning why they don't offer this in the 60 rail. I could be tempted to get try out a 500mm 40 setup, or even the 500mm 30 rail. The carriages would be lighter. It might have some use, and would really keep the tripod light.

From what I can see in the PDF, 40 is about half the weight of the 60, and 30 is about half of the 40. Add to (subtract from) that the 30% in cutouts, and there is the potential for a real lightweight setup.

Flying with a large slider?

Does anyone know the best way to pack a 5 foot slider for travel in an airplane? I'm trying to come up with a quick/cheep solution. Thanks-

I use a gun bag for mine, but I only go up to 1000mm... and I don't think flying & a gun bag go well together these days!

So... how about a ski bag? This looks nice:

It's a little long but.....

Well after reading thru all the posts I finally opted for the WS-16-60 instead of the WS-10-80 since that is what most are using and my cam is under 5 lbs. Ordered it from the amazon site http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_0_7?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=drylin%20slider&x=0&y=0&sprefix=drylin%20&ih=5_1_0_0_0_0_0_1_1_1.160_165&fsc=6 will be here on Tuesday. Since I hike to shoots and every ounce counts I am still looking to trim weight. I might have some "dead weight" cutouts done on the rail at a locat CNC shop.
Also found an interesting source for a cheap case after reading "Zonazen's" post at http://www.discountart.com/store/storagetubes.html

Excellent! You'll love it.
Don't forget to checkout my end-stop/support solutions...great addition to any slider!

I like the looks of those storage tube, good find. I've been using a gun bag for the last three years (all padded & soft), they cost $10.00.

Damn, I didnt jump on that friday when i saw it posted. If you picked it up congrats on the great deal. Looks like im back to my spidertrack idea.

I made a spider trax dolly too, with struts for the rails...I say its really heavy! I usually skateboard with my buddies and I have to carry everything and its not very portable. Lookin in to the zazaslider now.

Another tip: The rep for IGUS said I could purchase the smaller 10-40 rail and if 1000mm is too long I would be able to cut it with a metal saw! Saves much more money considering the amazon one costs $70 and the one from the Igus rep costs $100
