Shooting 16:9 in DVCPRO/50/DV

Dave, I can only offer a guess as to why this is so and maybe a positive use for the color temp to stay unchanged.

You can use the filter wheel for DOF control in a 3200k environment like an external matte box.

I know this is not what you need for your type of work, but there are times on my DVC-200 that I would like to be able to put a filter on in a non-5600k environment to get shallower DOF.

Since this has been changed, it would have been be nice to have a 4-way selector of 5600, 3200, A & B to offer quick access.

Hi,

If I had to track someone from inside to outside, I would use the 3200 preset for insdie and prepare one of the manual white balances for the temp outside, because outside is rarely the perfect 5600K anyhow. Then switch between the in side and outside and you are moving with your subject.

This is much better than ATW ever was and it is only within a 10% window or the button to move between two presets, in which the outside temp may be 4500 on a cloudy day or 9500 an a hot California summer day. I would work the HVX the very same way.

Thanks,
Jan

It's easy to say that but I have 3200k in my preset as most of my shooting is done at night. Means If I am inside I have to think to change it to 56ook just in case.
Even if you do set 5600k as your preset you have the problem if someone runs inside. You also use the word "prepare" not always an option.
Don't get me wrong I love this camera but this is a major design fault. Either go one way or the other, either fully like the 200 or fully like a broadcast camera.
This is a problem that easily would be fixed by being able to assign a different present to an assign button. I would rather have a balance slightly out than totally out.
A network I do alot of work for was looking at getting these for their regional stations. They asked me about the camera and when I told them about this set up they were shocked. They were interested in 2000 for the metro station and 500s for the regional. Last week the senior cameraman went to check out the sony xd hd range.

Is there an advantage to correcting the WB optically with a filter as compared to correcting it electronically? I have used broadcast cams and the HVX, and I have to say that I'd prefer to have the prosumer cam setup, where you can combine any color temp with any ND.

The "squeeze" term is a carryover from the DVX100, where they would "squeeze" the footage into SD resolution. It confused a lot of people then, and now, it doesn't make any sense at all.

Most broadcast cameras now have a dual wheel. One for the balance and one for the density wheel.

This works great.

Jan is it possible in the future for there to be an upgrade that lets us put a preset in a user button? This would fix everything.

^ I second and quadruple that. That would be THE BEST solution since all newer cams work this way. I wish Jan would direct this to the engineers...hitting the User 1 button would change to 3.2 and 5.6 respectively.

Our HPX500 is out at Panasonic for the 5.6k preset issue, we only had fun with it for a day or so. Can't wait to get it back to do some more tests before using it in real projects. This month has been fun, we got the HPX500 and a D60 and a newer Mac Pro, I'm in heaven

Maybe stating something obvious here, but I use the AWB switch at the front of the camera, when I want to change from 5600K to 3200K or viceversa. When shooting with a preset just flick the switch twice and it switches. To me this works even faster than a wheel. So I don't see any reason why people go on about such a minor detail anyway. With two manual settings and a preset you can tackle any situation in my opinion.

Based solely on your remark on filter wheels to change directions seems downright stupid to me , I guess there concerns are more based on the P2 workflow vs. XDcam.

Just tried this and works well. First I had heard of it.

This is also how the Sony XDcam-HD cams work.
