DIY IndieSlider...

Just picked my slider up this morning from the Igus shipping department north of Toronto.

I've been emailing with them, and they have been aware of the "Zaza" since, apparently, the beginning of the year! And so they keep some rail in stock (they aren't the factory, just a warehouse).

Regarding the adjustable clearance guides that were mentioned some pages back, here's the respnonse from the Igus rep:
"The adjustable clearance guides are unfortnately not available for the W16 size carriage. It's only in the W10 size. The carriages are more expensive about $10.00/pc as opposed to $5.00/pc in the drylin W10 series."

Oh, and the rail comes in a darker color (Zaza, you seem to have this color) and a lighter one (DM_Rider, yours looks like the lighter color)... But the carriage doesn't come in black.

I will be tapping my rail (...) this weekend, shooting 2 projects in the next couple of weeks, pics to follow.

Thanks, Zaza, and to everyone on the thread who have contributed their ideas!

Excellent! ..and too funny at the same time.

Yes... I have some to play with on a new project I'm working on now. They are very adjustable and will come in handy.

Yes.. thank you everyone for the great ideas on this humble project.

@ ZazA

thx v much for saving a lot many souls getting ripped off by GlideTrack folks :) i have ordered JVC HM700 & plan to build a Slider of my own your way.

plan to put the slider on my monfrotto 516 tripod head & try ti intsall another 516 head on to the slider with base plate on it to mount the JVCHM700 i guess all weight would be around 10kg on slider ... what is your suggestion for what should be order to igus for making a rugged rig :)

The JVC camera specs say it's about 8 lbs., stick with the WS-16-60 and you're all set... If you think you're going to get a LOT heavier than that, you could order the WS-20-80, but I think it would be overkill.

Thx ZaZa, BTW after i assemble the four sliders on rail how/what do i use to make a platform above all the 4 slider for mounting the camera ?

The order on the first page includes the rail and the carriage with the glides already mounted! You're all set. Just drill and tap a hole in the carriage and you're ready to mount your head to it. Please go back and look at the detailed instructions in the first post....and visit the photo album for more views:

Good luck & enjoy!

Frank, could you post a a picture of you using it? I'd love to see how you rigged it up...

Here ya go.
The rails is a different system than yours.
Actually more than 4 times as expensive. I wish I would have discovered the ZaZa Slider before I bought it.

Anyway. In the moment I have solid a plate made where I can mount my Miller head. Also some other bits like a mounting system.

With all the bells and whistles my HVX is a bit on the heavy side. So there will be a support strap when the slider is on that pod.

It´s not suuuuper solid (remember it´s made for fishing rods) but if you take your time it`s solid enough to get smooth shots and - as you can see - it´s super versatile.

I plan on using this as a jib and a slider, but I have a couple of questions before I purchase the stuff from IGUS:

1 - Has anyone tried this using the fulcrum point as the middle of the slider and the very end slider?

2 - Was there any flex or twist in the rail?

3 - What rail and shuttle were you using (length, diameter, width)?

4 - How much weight were you using from the tripod head mounted on top of the slider to the camera and it's accessories?

Thanks for any info and the continued support to keep DIY alive!

Sorry, I'm not understanding this question????

If you mount the rail on a head, you can slide the camera to the end and use it like a mini jib...if that's what you're asking.... checkout the video for the Kessler PocketDolly to see what I mean.

2 - Was there any flex or twist in the rail?
NONE what so ever. The W16 (the parts in the very first post) are rated at 500 lbs. If you put each end of the rail up on blocks, you could probably stand on it with out any flex....and twist...not even a hint.

3 - What rail and shuttle were you using (length, diameter, width)?
Parts, part numbers, length and complete instructions are in the first post. If you need more specs, visit the igus web site...it's full of great information.

My rig at it's heaviest is about 12 pounds and I've never had a problem. I would guess that you wouldn't have any problems with up to a 50lb. rig as long as you had the proper support.

I meant attaching the tripod in the middle or attaching the tripod on the far end of the slider.

If you mount the rail to the tripod at one end of the rail, your whole rig will topple over. Read through the posts in this thread... there are many pics that show both a center-mounted rail and a rail that has two tripods, one at each end.

But if you're trying to create jib-like movement, you'll want to mount the rail to a tripod head, using the center hole on the rail, so that you can pan and tilt the entire rail.

I was also thinking if I mounted it at the end I could extend the rail with wood or metal to add counter weights to make bigger jib moves.

Since all the cool kids are doing it...

Since all the cool kids are doing it...

So I finally decided to jump on the bandwagon. I finished the slider last night... mostly. I will be going back and adding the second cap on each end, but Lowe's was out of the nylon spacers.

[rant]

So the nylon spacers come in two-packs. There were three plastic bags in the drawer, one was complete. One had been opened and a spacer removed. The third was empty. Really, people?

One of the employees told me that this has been a constant problem for them. Is a 75-cent piece of nylon really going to break your budget?

[/rant]

I'm also still weighing options for adding feet.

For mounting the tripod head, I went with the Filmtools 4" riser. $25.95 plus shipping, and it works very well.

Footage will follow. It's been terribly rainy and gloomy here in East TN, but as soon as we get a break (hopefully this weekend) I'll get out and shoot a little.
