DIY IndieSlider...

I just tried out my diy igus slider today that I built in a big rush yesterday. I dont know why I sort of expected to be able to just use it on a tripod but it tips over even with my little 5dmk2 on my sachtler fsb6 head and bogen adaptor . i suppose if i put some weights at the ends it might help. i used it with two light stands instead which worked fine but not as easy to adjust and set up and move around. any suggestions? Fortunately my sachtler FSB6 tripod came with a case that fits the tripod+head, two light stands and the slider with carriage and bowl adapter attached. I would love not to have to carry around two extra light stands, but what else can i do? it seems more precarious than expected to have my camera sitting out at the end of a tripod whose leg span is less than the length of the slider, especially since its impossible to have both legs right under the ends of the slider.

my tripod legs definitely do not spread as wide as i'd like so im sure if i got a wider spreader that would help a lot, but is there another way? is it just adding weights to the ends of the slider so that the center of gravity of the slider is more centered and shifting weight of the camera affects the center of gravity less? i suppose what i really need is just to put a sandbag on the legs or on the spreader to just keep it right in place.

Hummm... not knowing that tripod...I'd sandbag it. I know there are a lot of pages to this thread, but go back & review for options. I always recommend using sandbags. I picked up a Bogen 3046 on eBay for cheap. It works great with (3) 5lb. ankle weights on the spreaders. I can slide my DVX100b w/M2 adapter all the way to the end...no problem.

Hope that helps....

No need to tap if you gonna bolt it to something

No need to tap if you gonna bolt it to something

I know I'm going on a limb here, but is there anyone's who'd be willing to drill/tap holes into a rail and carriage, and then ship it to me? I would of course pay for shipping, parts, and a little extra for your time.

If your gonna bolt the slider to something that is allready threaded, you don't want to tap the slider, you want the hole to be just big enough for the bolt to move through freely. if both items are tapped it just doesn't tighten as well, the slider is then not really pulled tightly to what you are bolting it too.

well, Zaza's original post called for tapping the center hole 3/8" to screw directly onto a tripod. bolting it is an alternative method. you're right, threading when bolting wouldn't make sense. it's an either/or senario. i bolted mine, because my cheap-a$$ tripod only has 1/4-20 thread...too small for IGUS rail holes.

Here's a shot done on the zazaslider and this is the same footage I mentioned on
the previous page of posts where I had trouble with rail wobble. Next time I will switch up my tripods.
I ended up smoothing with shake instead of FCP. The actor is my friend Hank, who has worked with me on
other projects and this is my first real serious shoot using the slider other than test shots - a christening so to speak.

Camera was HF100 at f2.0, 1/48 no DOF adapter, light was a 1k tungsten softbox

I looked through most of the 46 pages of post but just thought I would check. I'm getting ready to order the parts are they still the same as the original post. I've seen most of the variations just wandering if this still accurate
Here's the order:
WS-16-60 Drylin 'W' rail 1000mm
WW-16-60-10 Drylin 'W' carriage

Nevermind just ordered my parts.

I may be too late but I discovered a better ratio. on my 4' rail I have tripod mounts set up 12" in from each end. Better that way.

of the way
Just ordering mine today and I'm going with a 3' but also a 6'. I'm going to do the setup like the T-Slide with 2x 100mm bowl tripods. If I have the tripods a foot from each end am I going to get much flex in the middle with a HVX and Lex setup?

All done! Thanks for the info on this. Very easy to put together and worked very well.
Need a little practice but so far so good.

Thanks again ZAZA!!

Kewl! Glad it's working for you.

FYI...I'm at NAB and I happened by the T-Slide booth. As I looked at the guy sliding a camera, I asked if this was all igus parts. He was caught off-guard and didn't know how to respond. He told me they manufacture everything themselves. I said the parts looks just like igus stuff....then he said the carriage, bearings and bearing guides are igus, but they make their own rail that is stronger than igus (still looked like stock igus to me). At that moment, he blew me off and started talking to another guy standing there....

I don't think he likes me....

You should have stood by the booth with a big sign with the link to this thread, haha.

Or a big sign with the Igus link and the part numbers, haha.

I wonder if Igus knows what this company is doing...
