DIY IndieSlider...

I used it on Saturday, it worked very nice (as seen in pict)
Funny about the tslide guy, cant beat this thing for the money!!

I'm currently storing mine out in the garage by my beer fridge. Every time I go to get a beer I practice sliding it back and forth smoothly.
Practice makes perfect!

Great! Lets see some footy....

Would you say you "practice" a lot then? Haha good idea though!

...once you sober-up a bit!

I have also built a slider using the same igus parts.
I have noticed that it is hard to have a smooth sliding when going from left to right when i cross the central part of the slider (where the tripod attaches).
The only way to keep the movement smooth is to stay on one side of the slider (left or right) wich minimizes the length of the slide by half.
I use a canon hv20 + letus mini + more or less heavy lens. but it's not too heavy ...
I have also noticed that when the camera is in the center of the slider (where the tripod attaches), the vibration of the letus spreads in the all camera, and my footage is blured by that.

Hummm... I haven't heard of any of these problems before??? You can see, I have a DVX100B with an M2 35mm adapter and haven't had a problem.

Perhaps you should read back in the thread and make sure you haven't missed something? Can you give more detail...like on what's preventing you from sliding across the middle? This is THE sweetest spot on mine. I have no problem sliding smoothly from extreme end to extreme end.

Hey Zaza,
If I intend on only using mine for a HF-S100(HV20 sized cam) and possibly a 5Dmk2 do you think I could get away with the 10mm x 40mm ? I don't want to waste money and buy an over kill rig since I would be using a bare cam at about 3-4lbs max.

Yes... I don't think it would be a problem at all.

OMG! I just happened upon this thread and read all 47 pages worth! I am going to Russia in a month to shoot a documenary about beautiful Russian women:) Hey somebodies got to do the dirty work in this business, can't be all cake jobs.

I was going to buy an Indie Slider to take along. Now I will put one of these ZaZa Sliders together instead! I have a JVC GY-HD110U which is just about 9 lbs. Eventually I am adding a 35 adapter, rails and mattebox. Will the original Zsa Zsa recipe handle the weight?

ZaZa a special thanks to you and everyone else who contributed to this awesome thread!

BTW - NickyBee that is some girl you have, a lovely lady;)

I just ordered the 1 meter track and carriage from Igus. Also ordered an el-cheapo Slik SH-706 3 way head from B&H for $40. Has 1/4"-20 and 3/8" screws. Holds up to 15 lbs.

Has anyone had problems with the tripod center hole on the track stripping out? I'm not sure I like the way you have to keep screwing the track onto the tripod, and back off again. Seems like a lot of wear and tear on the track hole. What's your experiences with this so far? Thanks again.

Mine has been on & off at least 60-70 times...no problem. You could always attach a quick release to the tripod and a plate to the rail...others have. Someone else bought a small, low-profile nut and once the track is on the tripod, screw it on for added security.

Just a few ideas...

Egad, what a spellbinder! I read this thing front-to-back the last 24 hours; didn't want to miss a word. I really appreciate the way the guys selling this stuff for a living are treated with respect by (most of) us who are DIY-ers. Those who need to do it themselves will find this thread, and the pros will spread the word to those who don't find it.

Anyway, I have bottled up my comments 'till the end to make sure I wasn't repeating another's idea.

To Luis, here is a link to an adapter so you can get rid of those ugly clamps: http://www.dvshop.ca/audio/adapters.html or you can search for Mike/tripod adapters or frequent your local music store. And what is that slotted angle doing coming out from the front of your slider rig? Torsional stability?

To DM-rider, I'm not sure that reversing the runners will add stability, as they are pivoting on the outside edge of the track either way. But it can't hurt.

To Thekreative (and others) for maximum stability with two supports, an engineering rule-of-thumb is to place them at the quarter-points. So for a 1M rail, 10" to a foot is about right, but for a 1400mm rail they should be 16" or so from the ends. This will limit deflection, too.

MrMoe, the Kessler handwheel action seems to be about 8 to 10 turns on the wheel for a 40" travel. That would give a 6" circumference pulley, or a 2" diameter (I am an estimator in my other life). If, as another poster mentioned, the pulley was mounted on the dolly, there would only neet to be one pulley (also trying not to reverse engineer someone else's idea).

Nickybee, your X-Y array is such a graceful idea. It occurred to me that a simple pulley system (described above and shown in an earlier posted video) could also be used to synchronize a pan along the slide, giving the impression (even more at long radii) of a circular track. A bit trickier would be to synchronize a pan of the track itself with the slide (with a head below the track as those without removable heads are required to do anyway, and we saw in the Pocket Jib demo).

Just food for thought. Thanks all for the wonderful thread. I'll be getting a slide later this summer, and "post footy". Back to my HVxx forum (oops)!

Hi
sorry, but ugly! look at mine:)

You didn't say butt ugly, did you? I, for one think it is very clean looking. Function over form might suggest a rubber washer under the disk if the slider makes a click/bump when it gets to the end of its travel.

I was thinking, anybody ever think of creating an Etch-a-sketch kind of thing with cranks and an x/y layout? Could be really cool.

Hi, i have read through this thread so thanks everyone for the info! I am a little confused though, and i want to make sure i buy the right thing so i figured i'd ask. This may be a little stupid :(

Does this order look right?

This is the link: http://www.igus.co.uk/wpck/default.aspx?PageNr=2004&scroll=259&step=6

Oh, and may i ask what does it mean by the 'shaft diameter'?

I'd appreciate any help, especially from anyone who ordered the parts in the UK :)

Cheers!

You should have stood by the booth with a big sign with the link to this thread, haha.

Or a big sign with the Igus link and the part numbers, haha.

I wonder if Igus knows what this company is doing...

I just finished reading a Patent Guide Book. Fascinating stuff! It could be that Igus are leaving the "new use" patent option wide open. The rails are NOT patented for use as video camera accessory apparatus by Igus.

Here's mine in action...
Quick Demo of the PortaDolly XLDL in action Oh and before you protest.
No the short 'Dog Leg' extension does NOT show up in the frame, even with a .66WA lens.

I'm gonna try and get hold of a wider track as the 60mm, when I add the letus with lens, and 8" LCD, the weight becomes to much, I wonder if the 10mm rod diameter would work as good as the 16mm?

VERY cool... really nice work! Now all you have to do is automate the movement and WOW.

All of the slider parts came in today. I bought the rubber 3 hole blocks and threaded bumper stops that Nickybee used. They give it a more pro polished look. I bought some tripod legs off ebay for 20 bucks and I am ready to roll... I mean slide. Thanks again guys! I'll post my footage when I get this up and running.

Awesome. btw what tripod are you using? Is it one with a 1/4" thread? If so, did you have to drill a new hole off centre?
