DIY IndieSlider...

6'

6'

Just ordering mine today and I'm going with a 3' but also a 6'. I'm going to do the setup like the T-Slide with 2x 100mm bowl tripods. If I have the tripods a foot from each end am I going to get much flex in the middle with a HVX and Lex setup?

Yes.
I'm used a 5 foot track on a shoot last night with tripod head & camera combined weight of about 7 lbs.
Shot had slow movement along track and I noticed some vertical bobbing in the middle of the slide (1080p24)
However its nothing that can't be fixed with FCP's smoothcam filter.

EDIt: - will post link to some slider footage soon

Are you sure about that?
for 16mm rail, 1600mm(5.2ft) long w/ 50lb load, the deflection i calculated is pretty negligible at 1.2mm(0.05in). this assumed the tripod support is at the tips of the rail. I have tested 1000mm but not 1500mm.

can you show that segment that was shot?

Trey, why would I make up stuff like this? For my own amusement?
Because of this thread I own and use an IGUS rail and I feel slightly indebted and grateful.
Therefore I saw a post and answered it with my experiences.

As an FYI to theKreative who asked the question to which I answered. The calculations Trey points out are to a track with a 16mm rail. The rail I use is 10mm. WS-10-80 with length of 1480mm (58")
For supports I use two velbon tripods. Each is about 6 inches from the rails end.

J Davis, this is all great information & I really appreciate your sharing it with everyone!
Please keep experimenting and posting. Good stuff.

Thanks Zaza. I plan on posting the final shot, which is an actor friend of mines improv. It will be unfair to the actor for me to post anything but the final piece so you will not see the frame shake (thanks to FCP's smoothcam). I guess everyone will just have to trust me in that there was wobble and that it irked me enough to make a forum post.

Of note, my shot was a forward slide at about 10 degrees off axis so the rail will not appear in frame. It also involved a gentle pan and a slight tilt. All of which added pressure on the rail. My deliverable is 720p and I shot at 1080p. The wobble shows in both, but not on the small LCD of the cam so at the time I thought I was in the clear.

didnt mean to offend you, J. I was just checking to see if my calculations were in the range, which I believe I made an error w/ the calculation.

how much deflection would you say it has while moving across?

I don't know as I work by eye. I am sure its because of the tilt/pan during the slide. In future I will only plan a shot like that if I have the use of a proper dolly.
I also plan to switch up the rail support by adding my bogen to the centre.

my calculation shows w/ your setup, you should have about 1" deflection. cehck see if that seem right to you?

1 inch ???

If I were to guess the rail bending would have created
a vertical movement of about 2 to 3 millimeters.

But at 1080p thats like a small earthquake.

FYI... I pan & tilt while sliding all the time with no problems....of course my slider is the 16mm version (the one I spec in this thread), 1000mm in length (about 39") and is only supported by one tripod in the middle. I shoot with a DVX100b w/M2 & FF.

You can see it in action in both "Twisted" & "An Enchanting Twist of Peccadilloes"

Ok. so at last I can also post some pics of my setup.

not the best photo's but I was to lazy to move everything.

I've got the 1000mm, 16mm, but then a 150mm carriage and I moved the "sliders" out.

then I milled some feet/stops out of polyethylene (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polyethylene). So it can stand very close to the ground and still slide, or mount.

I then mounted my kessler head onto the tripod, the Zazaslider to the kessler head, and my normal head onto the slider, and bob's your uncle, I can slide!!!! yeah. thanks Zaza.

I think I'm gonna add a monopod or something to the ends, cause if I would add my letus system, the tripod legs are not gonna be stable when sliding end to end.

NICE! I really like the set-up. Great job on the end caps. If you sandbag the legs of the tripod, you won't have any problems sliding right to the end. I use (3) 5lbs. ankle weights and it's not going anywhere.

Good work... thanks for sharing! Now lets see some shots. I imagine with the kessler you can swivel-slide-tilt-pan...it hurts my head to just think about it!

thanks, I'm gonna take it out this weekend, see what I can get with it.

this kessler head already is great, but I still wanna get the Hercules 2.0 kessler head, then the possibilities are endless.

I'll post some footy on the weekend, thanks again for giving us the info to build these!! Aslo for the tip on the sandbags, I'll try it.

My pleasure...glad everyone is getting use out of the thread.

I have a 8' Kessler crane with the K-Pod and Hercules 2.0 head (plus the dolly wheels & flex track). Get the head... all the Kessler stuff is built like a brick Sh*thouse! You'll love it.
The K-Pod is just awesome.

I know I'm going on a limb here, but is there anyone's who'd be willing to drill/tap holes into a rail and carriage, and then ship it to me? I would of course pay for shipping, parts, and a little extra for your time.

I bet if you went to a local metal shop with a 6 pack, they'd do the drilling right then and there for nothing.

OK. Here I am trying the PortDolly XLDG ( Xtra Long Dog Leg) on a field trial . I'll post a rough of the actual shot through the HV20 later. I also owe you all detail pics of the system, alternative tripod mounting and my handy 'Disc Brake' variable friction brake. Just have too many projects going on at once. like many of us ;)

I made mine without tapping it, its actually pretty simple, put a longer bolt through your 100mm ball, and then stick it though the center hole and bolt it down.

Hey folks....I was taking my daily walk at lunchtime today and was reflecting on the slider..I wonder if it would slide smoother if a string or cord was attached and pulled as opposed to pushing it. It does seem a little less jerky doing it that way..Just a thought...Then I really had a brainstorm..How about using a fishing reel to wind the string......ok ok, just shoot me. :)
