DIY IndieSlider...

Actually, I tried this the day after I assembled my system. You're right - it's definitely a little bit "slicker" in terms of slide factor.

thanks for posting DM_rider - I guess maybe I should have earlier. Doh!

DM rider, nice set up, I honestly think the 100 ball base, with the bogen bowl adapter is the best set up out there, it makes for the fastest setups and break downs. and the ball base adds stability.

Ya, it's awesome. You can go from a tripod shot to a dolly shot in under a minute. I also have a 20" track on the way, which will make the system even more portable.

Has anyone tried to paint the parts yet? I'm considering painting the sled flat black, but I'm a little hesitant.

Hi !
First of all would like to thx for the great suggestion: IGUS

I got mine, ordered WS 10-40 and WW 10-40-10 It is thinner and lighter than 16-60. I 'll use in the mountains so need something lighter version. ( and it was also cheaper!!!) It is perfect for light camera, under 4 Kg (9 lbs)
Video coming soon!

I'm thinking about going for this as well, will it support a XHA1 or a EX1, without any bending? I can only get the 10mm or 20mm here in South Africa, I don't want to pay the extra money for 20mm if I don't need it.

Just got my short track in the mail. I think it's cooler than my long track just for the fact that I could go anywhere with this

sweet! just got mine today too, no pics yet. man, these things are more heavy-duty than i thought. pleasant surprise. only one negative.

when i first put the carriage on the rail i hadn't noticed that the factory cut on the rail left a slight shard of metal sticking up and one plastic bearing got a bit nicked as i slid it onto the rail. doesn't seem to be affecting motion, and it's still rather quiet. i can't wait to use it.

thank you ZaZa...can't say enough for bring this to light. and nickybee for getting right in there with some cool mods...Luis, nice pink one hahaha.....and everyione who has contributed here.....whew, no more 10' pvc track & dolly...

Luis...didn't know what else to say in my "speech" haha...seen what you've done with this, and i'm paying attention...plus, i'm an NJ native, so i speak right from my sarcastic heart.

So I've finally got a project that warrants me buying the Igus gear. My main question is how silent it is when moving the slider? I'll be using it on a b-camera for some interviews , but that's only viable if it can't be heard at all.

Is there anyone in nyc that has one already that wouldn't mind me coming and taking a look before I order myself?

Got mine last week and used it for a music video. fantastic. If your moves are done slowly, its quiet.

I'm in Downtown, NY if you wanna check it out.

My main question is how silent it is when moving the slider?

If you use a shotgun mic on a boom away from the camera/carriage you should be alright. Slider shots become more effective by zooming in (narrower FOV) so this would also mean your cam is further away from the talent and the mic.

Unfortunately for me, the threadin on the Matthews Head are at a certain Thread Pitch/angle, and the only bolt i could find was the one that attached to it... and i had to hack off all the plastic on that bolt all around it, since its molded...

I wish i had gone with a bogen

Sorry to hear of your troubles Zac. If I had read your posts earlier I would have suggested picking up a used Bogen head off craigslist and leaving it attached permanently to your slider. Looks like you worked out a solution tho.

anyone in nyc have a diy slider I could rent or borrow this week? I have decided to build my own but there is no way I'd have it ready in time for the shoot days I have this week! I just realized it would make a world of difference for one of my gigs because of the format of the project.

The specs below is based on material specs of IGUS Drylin W double rail system. There are two profile that I have seen ppl use in this thread, that is 10mm and 16mm diameter with respect to 40mm and 60mm width. The info below shows the max deflection, meaning the max bend at the mid-span of the rail.

I just took some time to see which one is suitable, 10mm or 16mm diameter, to possible save cost and weight.
-------------------------------------
case scenario #1: two-end supports
load: 6.81kg(15lbs)
shaft dia: 10mm
rail length: 1500mm
carriage lenth: 150mm
max deflection: 221mm(8.71in)

Case scenario #2: two-end supports
load: 6.81kg(15lbs)
shaft dia: 16mm
rail length: 1500mm
carriage length(40mm width): 150mm
max deflection: 43.2mm(1.7in)
---------------------------------------
I did some Excel to come w/ the numbers. The case scenarios is exaggerated but just to show the strength of the system. Therefore, 10mm w/ 1500mm is NOT suitable for 15lbs or 6.81kg load.

Therefore, youll find woblings using 10mm dia by 1500mm long rail.

other irrelevant infos: supports were assumed to be at end to give the most conservative number. meaning, the actual deflection is a lil less, so it is a good thing. also, load versus deflection is pretty linear.

Cheers! Enjoy...and post pictures & links to some of your shots using this baby.

well, i didn't plan this purchase very well, as i didn't realize how burly this IGUS system is....my main tripod thusfar is the Velbon Videomate 607...i know, kind of sad...and without a detachable head, it's utterly useless for me and the zazaslider...

my budget is so small, and this thing has been lying on my living room floor for 2 days now...

i have a Canon XH-A1, no DOF adapter, no real add-ons....any recommendations for tripod legs that can support the full range of movement (39" rail) without going over $100? it's a stretch, if not impossible, but any advice would be appreciated. i can weigh the legs down, and am open to any modifications, as i have any tools i need at my disposal.

thanks all

Look around for used equipment on Craigslist, or pick up a cheap head new for $30 to $40
---> see this B&H link

You can also support the rail with two in expensive fixed head tripods like the velbon you have.
