DIY IndieSlider...

Yeah, Zaza. The slider seems like a pretty cool and necessary piece of equipment. Hopefully it'll become part of the indie filmmakers repertoire <--- had to do a spell check on that word.

I'm pretty sure the Glidetrack was out long before the ZaZaSlider. In reality, anyone can buy the rail and put their own spin on it, if you put a different tripod head on yours, and put different breakers at each end, then in reality it's not a "ZaZaSlider" per say, but it's now "your"-slider.

I think Zaza was instrumental in finding out WHAT rail the Glidertrack used, and was the one instrumental in making the first DIY, and that's what he should be given credit for. Without his insight, nobody would be making their own sliders. If it's a ZaZA, ZiZi, ZingBattaBing-Slider or whatever you want to call it, you gotta give the guy credit for finding out all this info for us.

Sorry, I;ve just seen other people take the design and then go ahead and call it their own, with their own names. A couple of guys even made their own little stickers to go onto it. And it was without a doubt the ZazaSlider.

Well folks it's time to reveal the efforts of my never-ending quest for the perfect slider!

Congratulations, this is a very practical, nice and professional looking design!

Finally got around to ordering the Igus parts. The CSR I got was very nice and accommodating.

I got the one with no holes, so I will have a bit of extra work, but I feel I am just handy enough...although screwing this up would hurt the wallet.

You can't screw this up...it's SO easy. Enjoy your slider!

Great handles ZaZa. Using it also for 15mm rods was the first thing that came to my mind when i saw that picture. Brilliant idea to make a bracket for that.

Kudos - great job, Frank

Thanks Frank....somehow I knew you'd appreciate these. Feel free to spread the word!

Hey ZaZa..I think this is a great accessory to the slider...And I hear you will be making sliders for folks that do not want to make their own. That is a super idea. Best of luck with your endeavor. I really like the one you built for me. It works very smoothly. :)

Thank Joker! I'm glad you're still getting good use out of that slider.
I still use my original slider at every shoot...

Has anyone mounted a Swiss-arca plate to the rail? I would like to be able to quickly mount the rail to a Really Right Stuff ballhead. I mostly do photography and would rather not unscrew the ballhead each time I want to do some quick video. It looks RRS has some plates I can order, but it doesn't look like the screws are long enough. Any thoughts?

Thanks,

JT

What's the word on the new Drylin bearings?? Did you get to test them out? I'm getting pretty tired of my carriage sticking...

I talked in depth with the rep about the new bearing and he only had one he could give me (3 more coming soon). They are only available for the 10mm rail now...and although they are really meant to help with a hanging load (like a really heavy sliding door)...I have to say, they slide quite smoothly! As soon as I get the other three, I can test them properly.

I wonder why your carriage sticks? I've use the same slider in all kinds of weather and conditions for over 2 years now and it slides as smooth as the first day I put it together. I'm sure you've adjusted the bearings, and centered the weight of your rig on the carriage. Can you tell me more about how it's sticking?

Mine was sticking and moving very hard on a shoot last week, I just loosened the 4 bearing metals, aligned them and it worked perfect again. No complaints at all. Thanks for the ideas.

I need a tripod to support this slider. I have been trying (forcing) myself to go for a carbon fiber tripod. My setup is 15 pounds but I believe they rate the tripods as if all the weight was centered. I'm pretty sure putting 5 pounds at 1.5 feet from the center would need a much heavier weight capacity tripod.

Recommendations?

It typically gets real sticky or binds closer to one side of the rail than the other every time I align my bearings. If I loosen all four bearings it runs really smooth, but then I risk wobble in the carriage. I have a 5ft rail.

I know you might be looking for something lighter, but I use an older Bogen 3046 (eBay, like new...$125.00). I like it for a few reasons & this is what you should look for:
1. It's solid as a rock, yes, it's heavy, but solid.
2. Has spreader, which allows me to add 5lb. ankle weights to each one, making it super stable with the camera all the way to the very ends.
3. Has a crank-up center section, so once I'm set for a shot...I can adjust the height witout having to mess with the legs and re-level.

You can see what I mean here:
