Movies you always seem to watch when they're on cable.

There's a certain class of movie I probably wouldn't pay to see in a theater again or rent on DVD, but for some reason, whenever they're on cable I end up watching. Not always in their entirety either. This struck me while watching a bit of Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story for the umpteenth time. It always makes me stop flipping the channels. It's a sentimental biopic, but the cinematography is gorgeous and the score great, and Jason Scott Lee is a credible Bruce. That Thing You Do is another one. Not a great film by any means, but somehow very watchable.

It's always a movie that's not at all my taste, but it's entertaining enough to curve boredom (and kind of a guilty pleasure). Cheech and Chong's Next Movie. Not nearly as funny as Up In Smoke, with a ridiculous alien cocaine subplot, but it's watchable when I'm bored. Comedy Central shows it from time to time. Happy Gilmore. I also find myself watching movies on cable, even though I own them on DVD, like Fight Club, and The Big Lebowski (it's actually kind of funny watching it on cable, and hearing their pathetic attempts to censor it "This is what happens when you FIND A STRANGER IN THE ALPS!).

Diehard
Breakfast Club
Ferris Bueller's Day Off
Tremors
Goonies
License to Drive
Wargames

These are movies just off the top of my head that I end up watching whenever they are on. Mostly 80's movies for some reason or another.

Armageddon and Independence Day.

ID I might get one day on DVD, but Armageddon, never in my life.

But they're both entertaining considering the crap on TV these days.

Armageddon just came up in conversation tonight with my wife for some reason...
and we wound up looking it up on IMDB.
I was surprised - I had no idea JJ Abrams was one of the writers.
Weird.

For me its any Clint Eastwood flick...especially the spaghetti Westerns. I loved 'em so much as a kid and still do. I'm almost annoyed when I flick through the channels and see For a Few Dollars More....especially if I've got stuff to do...its like "sh*t....now I'm gonna get roped in for the next umpteen hours". Weirder still because I own 'em all on DVD....

Depends...
I won't watch them on regular cable normally cause you get "yipee kiyay, butterfinger" or some such nonsense. Really takes me out of the film...especially in comedies. Tried watching Raising Arizona recently, and they cut out things that didn't even need to be cut...
Or take Airplaine!, they cut out the
"Cream?"
"No, thank you, I take it black, like my men."
bit.

On the other hand, I'll watch the likes of Raiders or Casablanca or Citizen Kane whenever they are on...even though I own multiple editions of each, and could watch them anytime.

Go figure.

Edit:
I also get hooked into a good bit of the 24 Hours of A Christmas Story Marathon
