Dispatch - a Fat Monster film

Beautiful imagery, nice soundtrack, and spooky mood. This one definitely kept me on the edge of my seat.

The plot seemed just a bit dull for my tastes, but the suggestive nature of each element was enough to satisfy me. I loved trying to figure it out the entire time... and truthfully was a little let down with having to use the cg for the monster. You were going down such a great road with the teasing, who says you have to pay it all off like that?

The real gem in this piece, I felt, was your actress. She was absolute gold. The throat noises, the squirming, and her gargles while calling 911 were nothing short of incredible. I hope you use her again.

Mad props on this film, everyone. I enjoyed it immensely. It's interesting, though... this film would have fit well in BetrayalFest

GORD,
I appreciate you giving your honest criticism, seriously. It's not for everyone and I was actually really surprised people liked it at all (no bullshit.) I actually have been a bit drawn to a lot of the "bite of life" type shorts that I've seen lately and was inspired to do something like this. If you watch some of our other stuff it's more of a "short film" but we went for something different this time.

I do think we had a story and maybe it was just sooooo deep and intricate and complex that it messed up your hair when you watched it....

Obviously that was a joke but I do believe there was a story there.

Let me know which bar, I'll be there!

Hey Tim. Yeah, yeah, hehe.

Just a couple gripes on a recurring mentality I've noticed over the past few fests...

Ummm, story. Well, you guys have obviously done a great job, again.
I mean, for what it was, it was top notch.
Not something I look for myself in a short story and don't want to encourage anyone to follow your paths, because I don't believe your on the right one.

Like, "Let's do one scene from a hit feature and call that a short film". No. Please , God, no. I've seen that over and over again and those seem to be the ones that win. Please, to everyone else, do not, follow that menatality.

Let's get back to short film basics, can we? You know? A short film with a story?

Mark, you know animations are based and thrive on stories. You know that.
Check out Pixars "Partly Cloudy" on youtube. A 6 minute animated short.
Not the best imo but it works. It has a poo pooing story. Alright.

Lets get back to story telling, can we? And no, I still don't think you guys should have won. Friends or not. You had no friggin story regardless of how well you shot it.

My vote went to "Bit's and Pieces" for #1. But I love you guys, in a weird way, hehe. :)
Just saying, I'm not going to BS you guys.

Alright. I'll catch up with you guys in a bar sometime and have a few beers and we can punch each other out.
Good job guys. Grats on the win and for the many more to come.
Sincerely, Gord. Have a good year guys.

//edit: oookay, Pixars "Partly Cloudy" is no longer available on your tube. Tim, shoot me a PM if you'd like a version of that. :) Alright.

Kyle!
Again, I do think this is the type of thing that a lot of people will like and an equal number will watch and think...."okay....now what?" But fuc k that second group of people!!!! j/k.

Cg monster? Gosh darn you Kyle. We raised you better. Next time Mark is in Nebraska I'm going to have him kick you in the vagina.

I think there was a story there- it has a beginning, middle and resolution, although it does drop you in the middle. The beginning or backstory is eventually revealed though. I thought the fact that it dropped you in the middle of the scene was one of its best elements.

Like, "Let's do one scene from a hit feature and call that a short film".

Are you referring to any film regarding this one?

I think Gord just meant that it felt like a scene from a big budget horror feature. Not that they emulated a particular scene from any actual film. I think.

Can you please tell us exactly what lenses you used? Sorry if you already mentioned it but I can't find it in this thread.
thx

Question.

Do you think you could have gotten this same image had you not used the anamorphic lenses and the PL adapter?
