Im getting some hvx's and plan on capturing directly to our g5's. Is there a external SATA drive that can handle uncompressed HD footage well and doesnt crash?
If you are talking shooting from HVX and going live out of component video into capture card to your NLE, then you would need a raid-- SATA or otherwise. DVCPRO HD footage works great on even a single drive.
If you google SATA drives and boxes you'll find many. You would need a 4 chip card and a 4bay sata box to do this I believe. I was looking not too long ago and have it booked marked. I'll send it to you if I find it. I believe the box and card was about $600. This is minus the drives. Fry's has had some good deals of sata drive lately and I have seen that 750 gigs are stating to hit the market. 3 terebyte would be nice.
yes i need to capture live out of a hvx true uncompressed at 1080, to some sort of sata but i dont want to buy one that ends up only being able to handle SD or some lower res format, I was looking at G raid's as an option.
You'll need something that can handle a sustained minimum write speed of about 200 megabytes per second. That'll probably require a lot more than a simple G-Raid, which my FW800 G-Raid is rated at about 50MBps write speed.
