FEATURE: DEUCE OF SPADES - How I made a period full feature film all by myself on ZERO budget

Hi Faith,
just a very rough manipulation so you can see what I meant...of course the lights in his face are all from the wrong side now and I would pose him more next to his car and make him a bit taller etc. but the image is not that much falling apart, maybe just reshoot your main actor on bluescreen ?

salut Matthias

back to the poster topic, I do not like him looking towards teh car because now he looks like he is looking at the nose of the car and all mystery is gone. It's like: "why is this dude staring at his bullhorn?", where as when he looks in the other direction, he seem lost in his thoughts, a bit mysterious, and out of reach, all of which work very very well with the plot.

Also, here an exemple of a poster where someone is looking outside the frame not towards the center of it:

And notice how that gives it so much more meaning then if she was looking at her lover below... her looking away is more mysterious, makes me wonder: What is she thinking? It actually expends the scope of the poster because the poster reaches beyond it's own self.

IMPORTANT NOTE TO EVERYONE:

If you guys want to play/experiment with the poster to show me your ideas / make your point I don't mind ause it might be helpful, BUT please don't post your altered poster versions here. Instead email them to me here:

deuceofspadesmv@aol.com

The (very good) reason for this request is that I don't want these mutant posters LOL to somehow end up posted elsewhere on sites etc cause people thought these are the actual poster of the film. Look at how Netflix picked a really OLD design and I mean OOOOOLD to post on their site as my DVD cover !!!

So please guys do remove the posters you posted and from here on just email them to me. Many may thanks for understanding and cooperation.

Faith,

I just added your DVD to my Netflix queue. Do you think it might be helpful to start a new thread just for the DVD add request? Perhaps more people will see it this way as it is so deep into this thread which is growing rapidly?

Ah you might have a point here my friend :)... Start a thread where? User Films? Or is there somewhere else on dvxuser it should be posted?

Also put it in your sig so it's seen for all your posts. If your on Facebook/Myspace/Twitter broadcast it there too.

What's with the artwork on the Netflix site? Are their thumbnails too small for your nice poster?

LOL, I know, but worry not I contacted their headquarters and sent them the proper poster file, correct release date and correct cast list.

because they went and found the film on their own, they must have searched the net for poster images / film info, and found outdated stuff and used it - cause they didn't know it is outdated. Most likely they pulled some of it from Imdb, which still displays a previous poster version. I have not yet updated my Imdb poster cause they charge so much to post a poster that I am waiting to finalize mine to post final one. As far as Netflix goes, it would have been a lot easier for all involved if they had simply contacted the filmmaker and just asked for the info / graphics LOL :). But that's OK.

Learning a sh*tload about final stages of post production right now. Lots of questions and even the pros don't always have the answers.

Oh boy....

I think I'm starting to get a good mental picture of what is around the corner for DOS though.

HAS ANYONE HERE DONE 24 PROGRESSIVE DVDS ALL REGIONS and distributed them worldwide? I am told it will work, but wanting to get some feedback from someone who actually did it. How old does a DVD player have to be to not be able to play a progressive DVD?

Decisions decisions. So far seems progressive DVD is the best way to go for me, but any input appreciated. Please only give advice if you actually have done it or know someone who has. We are talking about doing a glass master for DOS and then, to have optimal footage quality (minimal compression of film), doing progressive DVD on dual layer disk.

below: Mark, at Artistry in Sound, CA helps with backgrounds and sound effects additions to beef up the soundtrack some more.

Here I am helping him figure out the hot rod engine sounds and make a lits of additional sounds I will need to record to complete the job. It never ends!!!

Good luck with your efforts and remember that no proffessional wants to really help you. Most of them have other agendas.

How can I forget? :)

Luckily we are all amongst friends here, and it's that solidarity amongst the little guys that saves our asses daily :).

Wish I could say the same about the U.S film industry people though, and I very much agree with your statement there. Why do you think I walked away from a half million dollars two years ago?

So what is the status of this movie right now then? I had followed this thread a bit back in the day, and am interested, but is it seeking distribution, does it have distribution already, is it actually done yet? I was just curious :)

It is in the very final stages of completion. Getting sound mixed and color correction and DVD authoring / subtitles / film poster. I have strong interest from severaldistributors, but have not actually shopped the film yet, they came to me. I am also leaning towards self distribution because I am confident I can move a large number of DVDs self distributing and make more money that way, as well as keep full control over all my rights. But I guess we'll have to see what kind of offers come to the table and if they are worth giving up all above for ;).

Oh and DVDs should be ready by June / July. :D

There is a certain prestige factor of actual studio distribution too, though, and it really does look like you have a quality film. Also, you can self-distribute at the start, but still find a traditional distributor later, that is not out of the question.

You may consider at least selling foreign rights through a sales agent, though then again your film is more American so I'm not sure what elements it has that will make it appeal to foreign buyers, but if it's a good film, it's a good film, and it will have value in other markets! Even a few thousand here and a few there still adds up fast across all territories.

I'm excited to see it, though, and impressed by what you have done. Your passion has clearly led to a quality film and you're taking the process seriously and taking your time, which is great :)

Are you stupid? Foreign countries love amerian hot rod movies.

Why are you giving advice that you know nothing about?

Uhh, excuse me? I don't think personal attacks are warranted here dude.

I didn't say at all that this type of film wouldn't appeal to international audiences, I said I haven't seen the movie so I don't know what markets it would or would not appeal to, but that it's worth pursuing foreign markets for any type of film! Some just do better than others.

Take a chill pill.

Now now... let's be nice :). I believe he has not read about the massive press exposure the film has received in foreign countries, so he probably didn't know. about 40% of my current sales are from foreign countries :).

My fans are located in: Australia, New Zealand, France, Switzerland, Belgium, Italy, U.K, Germany, Sweden, Finland, Norway even Portugal, and a few Latin countries. I have not yet tackles japan, but I will, soon.

My goal is simple:

WORLD DOMINATION !!!!

hahahaha! I feel like "Doctor Evil" - I put my little pinkie finger up to the corner of my mouth as I said "World Domination"!! LOL
