FEATURE: DEUCE OF SPADES - How I made a period full feature film all by myself on ZERO budget

TALKING ABOUT FOREIGN MARKETS, subtitle work is going nicely :). I spent another full day on the timing and now the subtitles are smooth as a baby's butt :)... So we started conversion into the languages, basically copy pasting each line back into template document. It's tedious, but my head volunteer Jerry has accepted to take over 4 of the 8, I am doing French, Spanish and Italian and my Finnish contact will do Finnish.

So when you open up the SET-UP menu, you won't know which language to pick LOL. Way cool. It's been fun to read one sentence from the film and then read it's 8 translations.... Some of them are easy:

ENGLISH: "Hey Jonnhy!"

was also "Hey Johnny" in several other languages :P. I was really enjoying reading the Italian version of the film, especially when it came to the "Shut up you dumb Wop!" sections LOL. Good thing my Italian contacts have a good sense of humor!! They called Fresno "Spagetti eater" in Italian

Who are you calling a wop, ass hole?

A chi hai detto mangiaspaghetti, pezzo di merda?

LOL, my characters have such foul mouths, I love it!

Somebody PM me to ask if I was using natives to do translations. The answer is yes, natives that actually were born, raised and live in each of the countries. I am lucky cause I have fans everywhere now, so it was easy to find people from each country, willing to translate. In some cases I have more than one person on the job, so one translates, the other checks for accuracy and adds car related terms. Beacuse of the hot rod technical aspect of some of the dialogues, I had to find people that know hotrods, so they woud find the proper terms in their language.

For exemple, being that I am French myself, I did the French translation. I then sent it to the editor of French Hot Rod magazine AMERICAN MUSCLE CARS AND HOTRODS and he checked all my work, added French hot rod terminology and sent it back.

In Italy, I also have the editor of a Hot Rod magazine double check my translator's work and adding Hot Rod terms.

So I guess I am trying the best I can to make sure the subtitles will be correct, but I can't tell myself since I only speak English / French.

My final plan is to test subtitles one last time here locally, after they have been finalized by post house and have a person from each country who lives here locally come to my house watch the test DVD and the subtitles and give me the last seal of approval before we proceed with DVD authoring.

Hopefully I got my fannies covered this way.

Dang. That's a lot of work... But well worth it to achieve....

WORLD DOMINATION (hehehehehehehehe) :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

Make sure you don't have people pretending to know another language just so they can have a sneak peek at the movie :-) "Sure I speak Latin. It translate as Deucekis Ofikis Spadekis"

I'm willing to do the Na'vi translation for free. Just send me a dozen copies of the DVD. I promise that I probably won't try to sell them on ebay.

We translators don't get to see the movie, but just in chuncks the spoken text in Word documents. That's with little context and no visuals. That appeared to be more difficult than we thought, so the original chunk-documents change (color coding, comments, etc) during the proces. There's quite a lot of q&a with Faith over the email to adjust our understanding of some of the lines.

It's fun doing and give's a little peek into the movie/story. But Faith could have easely chanched the order of parts of the chunks to prevent the whole story comming out. I wouldn't notice. (Don't thing she has done that though...)

It's a fun job. Mostly because I feel I am doing something usefull for an inspiring project.

Groetjes,
Jasper

p.s. "Wie noem jij een spaghettivreter, klootzak?" is the Dutch translation. Thought I think we only have the word Spaghettivreter because someone had to translate an American movie once. We Dutch don't do the 'callin/giving someone from another country a swearwordlike name' that much.

There's only two things I hate in this world. People who are intolerant of other people's cultures...and the Dutch.

Thank you Jesper.

Note: You really need to use some moisturizing cream. You look like you're a bit dried up on that photo LOL :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

I'll throw a wooden shoe or a windmill at your *ss if you don't back off now :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG). Never said we don't hate other people. Just a different swearwordingsystem.

HAS ANYONE HERE DONE 24 PROGRESSIVE DVDS ALL REGIONS and distributed them worldwide? I am told it will work, but wanting to get some feedback from someone who actually did it. How old does a DVD player have to be to not be able to play a progressive DVD?

A progressive region 0 (zero) NTSC DVD is your best bet if you want to use the same disc worldwide. Most displays in PAL countries can handle NTSC, but the inverse isn't true in NTSC countries except for people with region-free players who import films. A progressively-authored DVD will play on any player regardless of age, it's part of the DVD spec. If the display is not progressive then the DVD player automatically adds pulldown to fill it out to 29.97fps.

Hope that helps!

Yes thank you, you just confirmed what Frank and my post house said, so that's gonna be my plan.

Talking about foreign countries, I just sold a DVD copy to someone in Southern Africa yesterday :)... Fun!

Good luck with your efforts and remember that no proffessional wants to really help you. Most of them have other agendas.

Funny, I've found that pros are the most helpful, because they don't have anything to prove. On the other hand, I've found some amateurs can be jealous and try to pull you back down to their level if you threaten to rise above them.
