hey Hayden (and everyone else, of course), a question about KING&ANGEL - do you think it'd help to see a shot of Angel in the end, being on her own, to underscore that they are no longer together, now that the rain's over? the ending is a bit open-ended, it's true... thanks
I liked the movie just as it is. But if you wanted to change the ending, maybe repeating the line, "It is the only time I am not alone." but have Angel say it. With a shot of her alone, maybe in the same position as King (at the beginning - lying down). This might make people believe that King has opened Angels eyes to the beauty of rain. She has gone through a metamorphis. That might change your message. Not sure. It's hard to improve upon something that's already great.
P.S. Can I pay that man to VO my outgoing message on my answering machine?
ExFilms - thanks for the review if you have any more specific input about the direction and the cinematography, i would love to hear it. im still learning so everything helps!
about the bear being motionless - that was purposeful. at first i did want the bear to move and interact with the actors. but ultimately decided to have him remain motionless.. i felt it added a little bit of weirdness in to the funny/sad/weird combo i was trying to pull off.
there was a slight time constraint, but i didnt feel rushed to finish it. yea, there were a lot of locations, but we ran around pretty quick, it only took two days total to shoot everything.
and it probably looks rough because im still rough as a filmmaker
King & Angel - "But sometimes, ...all too rarely, the Sun is beaten. ...It is the only time I am not alone." Have you ever heard a better intro? Seriously, that is some great writing.
Angel: "It was a long rain that filled this bucket." Great stuff PashaPasha. Good luck!
Poker Night - I still love watching this one. It's really nice. The shots from above (teach me Obi-antomic!) The floating cards. The eye! And the music, after you throw the card at the camera, it works so well. Great choice of music.
Thanks for all the compliments on "All Roads Lead Here". It was something I really wanted to do for my talented musician friends. It was shot in 4 days in Toronto. This forum has been a great inspiration for me over the last couple years.

you ALREADY got my vote PK!!! DANG! (my best napoleon dynamite imitation)
thanks again...and actually, it wasnt so much a "choice" of music...i scored that myself in GarageBand.
as far as the effects...not much to teach. close your eyes, and have the vision. dont stop yourself because you feel a shot is too difficult to pull off. you can DO IT!!! ;D
Just wanted to thank all the contributors. We spent an enjoyable evening watching and discussing the films. To echo the general sentiment, deciding on a favorite was indeed tough, which speaks volumes about the talent that can be found on this board. It all was very inspiring. There's nothing I love more than seeing artists' creative expressions.
That said, "The Loner" got my vote. P.K., you've got a great knack for storytelling. What you created in "The Loner" is what filmmaking is all about (to me). I never felt like an outside observer--I was there, I was connected, I could relate. Well done.
And thanks to Barry_S and all the others who made this possible!
Great Contest. I watched all of them and most of them twice. Here are some thoughts in no particular order.
-- I was amazed by the effects in "Poker Night" -- they look completely professional. It's too bad King (from King & Angel) couldn't have done the VO for that one -- what a great voice that guy has.
-- I really enjoyed watching the Loner, Herbert, and the Seven Samurai commercial (just watched that flick for the first time this week).
-- "All Roads Lead Here" was the most complete entry from top to bottom, I thought. My favorite part was the 3d airplane flying around the globe, which I thought was a nice effect and put an original twist on an otherwise common exposition (Casablanca, Indiana Jones...)
-- "Br()ken was good technically, but I flat out didn't understand it. What is the truth? She mates and dumps???My biggest criticism of this film though is that the actress playing the girlfriend seemed miscast to me -- is this really the siren that has led all these guys to crash on the rocks? I didn't see or hear it.
Congrats to everyone that entered on their work. I hope the prize is worthy of such great entries.

HAHAHA...that seals the deal...i will NEVER do voice over work again! (it's my least favorite part of my film too)
I didn't mind the VO. It felt real to me. Like this is the average Joe (not that you're average antomic) going up against the baddest dude there is!! His voice cracks a little and is nervous. It was great.
My favorite part of Poker Night is, and this sounds bad, ...but it's the ending. It's perfect! Throwing the card at the camera (cool effect) and then that great music cuts in. The camera angles, the fx, the music you scored yourself, the whole thing is a nice package. That's what I'm really trying to say, "Antomic you have a nice package." There I said it. Take it out of context and do what you want!

;D HA! - Doesn't matter - "Poker Night" is an SFX masterpiece! "King & Angel" is an unfair voice comparison... the voice was brilliant! I have the clip on my drive tagged with a note: "Contact for trailer voice over"

IMHO PK that is a complement. I've seen some so-so movies that had a killer ending and I left thinking good thoughts. Last impression is important.
... Umm, like you making death threats and being alone!

Just for the record, that was a character I played in a movie. I would NEVER make death threats, ...on camera. My death threats are done on the Internet where anonymity, ...anonimitity, ...ananaminity, ...where your identity is undisclosed!!!
