DECEMBER DVXFEST SHORTS

Re: DECEMBER DVXFEST SHORTS

I really enjoyed watching these shorts.  I guess this was the first?  Props to all who submitted.

P.K., I gotta hand it to you, your's drew me in and kept me there right up to the payoff.  Good job.  The voice over and comedic timing was sharp.

All Roads Lead Here, Poker Night, and Herbert the Engineer were also some of my favs.  Bob Gundu has posted some really nice stuff before, and this doesn't deviate from the norm with him.  Loved the visuals and editing.  I also liked the effects in Poker Night and the initial color correction.  And the Adventures of Herbert the Engineer... funny stuff.  I giggled my way through the entire piece.  "Chong Wong, you're not going to get away with this..." :)

Oh, and honorable mention to the Smoker.  Honestly, I didn't see it coming.  I even checked out mentally thinking it was a stock PSA.  I then had to go back and rewatch after reading the punchline and thinking, "WHAT?"  I then knew I had been had.  ;D

Disjecta, loved the timing/syncing of the music and video at the stop light.

This was fun... good luck to the winner!

Re: DECEMBER DVXFEST SHORTS

Oh my gosh, I had such a hard time deciding. I wont say which film I eventually voted for, but it has taken up most of my free-thought time to come to a decision.

And in keeping with the "I learn something everytime I log on" theme I have going for myself, I have learned that I am WAY far from being up to contest caliber. :P You guys are just fantastically talented. (is "fantastically" a word?)

Re: DECEMBER DVXFEST SHORTS

Just spent an hour or so watching all the entries back to back.

First off - It was a very enjoyable hour and time well spent!

Very nice stuff and all should be very proud. I'm glad there are some sweet prizes up for grabs because this work warrants it! Great work and I'm betting it will be a VERY close race.

Once again, congratulation to all entries.

Don't say that! We are all peers here to encourage and support no matter the skill level. That's what makes this place so great.

Serious.

:)

Re: DECEMBER DVXFEST SHORTS

Exactly! What are you talking about, Terri? Your "Anti-Disjecta" piece was great.

Re: DECEMBER DVXFEST SHORTS

Terri -- seriously, don't think that.  Anyone who's thinking about entering the contest should.

I've told this before, but I'll spill it again... attending the UNLV student film contest, I saw all sorts of work... polished professional borefests, and angst-filled crapola, and then there was this one... it was this crazy thing that was put together by a big biker-looking dude about his quest to quit smoking.  It was the most amateur-looking thing, it seriously looked like he shot it on a VHS camera and edited tape-to-tape with it, but man was it funny, and the story content BLEW AWAY all the pretentious "film student" looking pics. I voted for it, and I think he won the best student film prize that year.

Content is king.  Look at the Simpsons -- horrible low-quality animation, but it's the longest-running sitcom in history.

And I thought your anti-Disjecta was delightful.

And as far as the Poker film... man, that ***almost*** got my vote.  Production value was brilliant, and your face -- very expressive, very cool.  It was one of the first ones I watched, and it stayed in the #1 slot until the last one I watched, which was just too indescribably delightful and I had to vote for that one.  But I definitely want to see more -- especially because you did it all yourself!  That's just too cool.

Re: DECEMBER DVXFEST SHORTS

I agree with all of what Barry said. The single most important thing to do is pick the camera up and press RECORD. There are many on this board, and I am not fingerpointing at all, it's just obvious to me, that leave their cameras gathering dust because they can't think of anything to shoot. It's paralyzing for them. We all want to produce great work the minute we look through the viewfinder.

The ONLY way to get better is to use the camera. Shoot anything, shoot everything. I'm inspired by things I see in post that were not apparent to me when shooting. I see things in throwaway shots that magically complete an edit with much better shots. Some of my crappiest shots have inspired me to watch out for new opportunities the next time I go out to shoot.

I'm still trying to formulate what I do. Where I am good at the pretty stuff, my downfall is storytelling. It can be argued that there are hidden stories in what I do and it's not necessary to have an actual story for something to work.

I just completed my first full narrative "documentary" film on my trip to Canada, complete with voiceover (my wife's) and it suddenly became one of the strongest pieces I've done. I didn't intentionally shoot with this in mind but the footage inspired it.

Do you see what I'm saying here? Just shooting can be the inspiration for a story. It doesn't have to be in a script first. If you are a talented scriptwriter already, then great. But I'm not and sometimes my footage dictates the edit to me.

The point is, don't be intimidated by lack of ideas. Shoot stuff and the ideas will come.

Wow, that was meandering. Hope it makes sense.

Re: DECEMBER DVXFEST SHORTS

ExFilms, you better watch out! Comments like that will result in a great big man-hug. Thanks a lot!

;D

Isaac and Josh, I'm really glad you liked it. Thank you very much.

thartley, you know we all enjoyed that bathroom video you made. And that was just goofing around for a few hours. There's another contest this month. Come up with an idea and shoot it. Do it, do it!!

Re: DECEMBER DVXFEST SHORTS

Hey Thartley...I know where you're comming from, But I think probably the good thing to remember is that It's free to enter and, well, you might not win but you'll probably have a lot of fun shooting it and more importantly you'll get that ever important feedback from your brothers and sisters on this board. In the end you'll be contest caliber by virtue of the fact that you'll have learned by doing and studying the reaction to, your work. I'll bet PK didn't think he would get the rave reviews he did, nor some of the others who entered. Whatching other peoples work is sometimes humlbing especially if it's good, but there too you learn from watching others and try to duplicate their strengths. This concludes mino's lesson on contest intimidation ;D

And as far as the Poker film... man, that ***almost*** got my vote.
And as far as the DVX100 Book and DVD... man, i ***almost*** bought that!

;D

actually. i did buy it.

To quote my own film..."What are the odds I can actually win this? I'm never gonna get it."

Thanks for the kind words Barry. I really appreciate it. Coming from you sure carries a lot of weight around here, I understand. I bought your book...just couldnt buy you vote!  ;)

ExFilms...wow...i escaped the flames without a hair out of place...THANKS!

This contest has excited me to a level I havent been in quite some time. I have already written the first act of my next short. Unfortunately, it's WAY bigger than me right now. No more "one man shows". and there's no way it will be done in time for the next contest...so looks like i need to come up with another quicky...maybe next time I'll REALLY vote for myself instead of that darn PK!!!!

Thanks to everyone here for being supportive of all the entries. It sure takes the edge off of the fear of submission. THartley, that should say enough. YOU CAN DO IT! we did.

Cool SpecialFX on Poker Night.  Looked very pro.  What was the CG done with?

although i'm a mac guy, and i edited in FCP, i keep an old windows box around for 3D Studio MAX. i dont have time to learn maya, although that would be a wise move on my part. however, MAX is finally coming in to it's own and playing with the big boys. quite a few hollywood blockbusters have been known to throw a MAX scene in now and then.

Re: DECEMBER DVXFEST SHORTS

I gotta give major props to the 'King-Angel' piece for the dialogue quality. It's so nice to actually be able to hear the dialogue.

And the actors were good. I wish the film had gone somewhere further than it did but that's more than I can say for a lot of short films where I just want them to PLEASE END!! So likeable actors, excellent dialogue quality, good music, excellent themes. But I wish the middle was better shot instead of the "you two do whatever and I'll film it" approach.

So, I voted for something else and I don't think I'd put "King and Angel" in 2nd place, but a lot of affection from me.
What version of max Antomic?
6.

i've got a test version of 7 floating around somewhere, but i have NO time to play these days. damn day job.

i've been using 3DS since the DOS days. before MAX. R1, 2, 3, 4

My former life in architecture lead me to 3D years ago and THAT eventually dragged me into the print world where i live 60 to 80 hours a week now.

Re: DECEMBER DVXFEST SHORTS

Cool thanks...Im stil in r3 land which I think could handle most of what you did. Again your 3d stuff was well done. I liked the tink sound as the card hits the lense, nice touch.

Re: DECEMBER DVXFEST SHORTS

r3 DOS or MAX3?

MAX3 could handle most of what i did. there are WAY better shaders and now global illumination that didnt exist before. most of those shots i didnt use them because of time restraints. i would still be rendering.

the tink was my electret condenser mic inside a mason jar being hit with the flick of my finger. cool you caught that.

Re: DECEMBER DVXFEST SHORTS

r3 max..One final questio, what did you use to make the effects smoke I think it was when the cards and paper disapear, was that a max particle effect?

Re: DECEMBER DVXFEST SHORTS

no...for the card smoke i used Apple Motion particles (2D app - known as the AE killer ;D ) [antomic ducks]

and the paper was a shot of real smoke on black set to screen with a soft garbage matte.
