I don't know what the etiquette is for cut n paste from one forum to another is so I suggest you create an account with cinematography.net and read for yourself.

cml-future-cameras

Sample shots are to be ftp'd over the coming days.

The short version is he seems positive so far and has been approached to shoot a feature on Red in Spring 07 which he feels is a timeframe that the Red Team can keep to for the release of the camera.

Congratulations to the Red Team.

Just wanted to give a heads up..

There is alot of negative things being said over on CML about DVXUser and some of the members.. I dont want to stoop to that level so i request you guys dont try and go over and defend yourselves.. it doesn't work, there are alot of "elite" attitudes that defy sanity.. so fighting is not constructive.. specially as the Stump info trickles out.

Jarred.. just read the 4k workflow thread over there. Amazing how condescending some of those folks are. It seems like they believe that technology is pointless and we should just stay with the status quo. If that mentality carried over to other industries we would be typing on a mainframe right now while listening to our favorite disco music on the 8-track.

I get the feeling that all that's dying down finally. Best to ignore it and move on, especially as the posts are now rolling around to valuable technical discussions.

The smell of...

The smell of...

I have been in the industry for over a decade and I hear those cries a mile away. That's the sound of a middle aged man worrying about putting their kids through college, he worries about whether he'll be able to get a house in the hills or a condo in Vail. He wonders about whether the kids that are shlepping his gear around might manage next year to shot a film for a tenth of his current budget, make the production company a bundle an lower his rate at the same time. We've heard it all before and you'll be singing the same tune when you finally replace him.
Cheers,
Steven Quinones-Colon

I think naysayers serve a very valuble purpose for production teams such as Jim and the rest of the Red crew. Without them there wouldn't be as great a desire to succeed or the worry that the chants of vaporware might infact come to fruition... It keeps them on their toes!!!

Long live the naysayer says I!

(also some of the crap you read is nothing short of amusing)

Back to the point though, Mr's Stumps tests look very thorough and I cannot wait to see more.

Nice! That means they likey... (Just like in middle school, the bigger the negative response, the more they like her curves)

I personally will never give them the satisfaction, instead I grin and let them freak out more and more till they end up in an insane asylum. :Drogar-Evil(DBG):

As a long time member of CML, and a much shorter member of DVXuser (1-year), I can tell you that both boards have their usefulness and shortcomings.

CML offers the best on-line knowledge base for working professionals in the camera crafts. It is an excellent peer-to-peer discussion. It's not geared towards beginners and rabble-rousers, which do make appearances from time to time. It's home to the some very accomplished folk, and many more lurkers who are just as accomplished. I've never found a stronger collective of minds working in the cinema crafts in one on-line place. Geoff Boyle has built a place for industry professionals, and as far I have seen, anyone with the chutzpah to step up to the plate and contribute in a meaningful way is welcome. There's plenty of respect for peers.

DVXUser, CreativeCow, DVInfo and assorted others are much more friendly to the less experienced, and are a great resource for anyone working with modest to extremely restrictive equipment and budgets. DVXuser is particularly helpful to those using Panasonic's prosumer level products. I discovered DVXUser last November when I was asked to produce the world's first project ever to be shot completely with the HVX200/P2 and transferred to 35mm film. At that time (and currently I might add) I'd say DVXuser was the best on-line resource for that camera.

Is that to say, that some Cinematography 101 doesn't happen on CML? No. Is that to say that some high end discussions don't happen on DVXUser (and others)? No. But I think those are the generalities. Just like sometimes amateurs shoot with the high end, and pros play with toy cameras. It doesn't usually work out that way, but it happens.

I'm glad that multiple venues exist. I would have loved something like DVXUser when I started in the industry. The DIY/guerilla filmmaking spirit is alive and well in the DVXUser forums, and that's fantastic. When I was building dollies and jibs in my garage way back when I was in film school, there World Wide Web didn't exist.

Those starting out today have a big advantage. The wealth of information both on-line and in printed material is staggering compared to just 5-6 years ago. I find that DVXuser (and some other sites) can be particularly helpful when those with some experience under their belt are willing to contribute to the discussion, and moderators help keep discussions on track. I rarely have time to contribute to any boards these days, but I like to help out when I can. I feel it's a responsibility of everyone who can, to give back to the community. Otherwise you do a disservice to those who took the time to educate you- when you were starting out.

Don't dismay if you don't understand what's being said on the CML, or printed in a trade magazine. That just shows how much more you need to learn to work with the pros. That doesn't mean you can't do your own thing, and some other websites can help get you to that point.

Here's a question some of you should get, where were you the first time you were asked to find shadow spray?

I.

Hi all

I am quite new to DVXuser and have enjoyed a lot of the up beat enthusiasm on the site. I am however not new to CML.

I started to check this site out as my interest grew in RED ONE and am very happy to say I ordered mine on the 31st just in the nick of time. David Stump has said some great things already and I could'nt be more excited.

Now as for the RED negitive thinking of some of the CML members I hope most take it with a grain of salt because you may end up working with that person you want to blast.

I have a theory on some of the RED bashing that takes place there.

1: People are lemming's (You can see it there, some influential people say RED is evil and a bunch of lemmings fall in behind. That being said I have also seen a little of it here, RED is the second comming and some people (note the word "SOME") show in their posts that they know little about the technology but are ready to lay down their life for RED.

2. The big influential heads of the lemmings are in tight with kodak/fuji. Now people have talked about how maybe sony or other big video company may have been behind the RED warehouse break in because they are worried and scared. Well sony and most of the other guys have a lot more products then just cameras so I personally think their worries are small compared with a company like Kodak. Think about it for just a second Kodak has lost a ton of their consumer and profesional still photo bussiness and now Digital cameras are starting to bite deeper in to their motion picture bussiness. I am not saying for a second that Kodak or Fuji was behind the break in because there is very little value for them to do it. What Kodak and Fuji tend to do is convince or entice the "Influential Elite Pro's" to pump up their product and bash everything else. I have personally seen just a little of what the kodak enticement looks like and trust me when I tell you it is more then the odd T-shirt and a 400' new stock test film. Look at their party's and who's invited just for starters.

So if you get a little pissed off with the attitude over at CML with some of their members just think of those little lemmings falling of the cliff to rocks below. Now with me being a part of the RED 1,000+ club they will be saying the same thing about me. That is until all the tests come out.

Just some food for thought.

Ha ha love the lemmings reference.. Im just surprised all these old timers dont remember that at one point of their lives they picked up a camera for the first time... and had to learn to use it. Them insulting the large pool of "students" trying to strive to become what they have become just isn't right.

I just wish the "elite" of the cinematography world had a little more class.

I find that dvxuser is quite capable of catering to those of us "ameteurs" and those experts equally as well. The difference is that there is much less a shunning of those less experienced (which far outweigh the "pro's"), and just a general desire/willingness to help. If you want to have discussions about the "raw-dog" hardcore filmmaking, technical mumbo jumbo, there are quite a few here capable of doing so. The "unwillingness" to share one's experiences translates to me into the "elitest" attitude, or I had to run up hill 20 miles in the snow and so should you.
To have a Barry Green type, with broad expertise, but who will answer the most mundane question for the millionth time, is what elevates this place in my humble opinion.

You can sit around and pontificate all day, or you can choose to do something more valuable and meaningful with that knowledge. It is a noble thing for folks who have much better things to do with their time to spend it here, helping folks such as myself to learn quicker, and be able to seek out and share in the experiences of those who paved the way before us

Yes indeed. thats what makes DVXuser.. we dont come at people hoping that they fail. Barry Green is a ninja, same with countless others. Haakon is gearing up to be the Barry Green of the Red camera if he keeps it up, and there are so many people that give diverse advice and encouragement across the board. You can see it in our film festivals. Its about learning. And if they are gonna slag you guys for learning I will continue to defend... no matter how ugly i end up looking.

It would be nice as hell if we could all just play nice though..

Thanks Emanual.. your another one of those guys around here that has overcome an language barrier to offer some great insight at times (when people can understand what the hell your saying) ha ha ha.
