D90 replacement and no Firmware update

As many had guessed:

I'm glad I moved to Canon, and only use Nikon for film stills now. But it saddens me to think back on Nikon, it's like that death sensation of when a relationship ends: you can't stop thinking about the disappointment, even though you're with someone else. They really screwed up big time: just consider that at this point they are yet to release a 1080 camera! Impossible to forgive. But oh, I'll miss forever those correctly placed aperture and shutter wheels.

so they will release a new camera that will address the problems with d90 video and they will release more affordable lenses, and you consider this to be bad news? considering that so many people believe in god i guess i shouldn't be surprised that so many believe in the mysterious firmware update, but honestly i think it seems even crazier.

Oh no, you read me wrong, matt. I'm just saying that I've simply given up on Nikon after too much waiting - this "news" just revived the disappointment that is still sore, even after a year. I hope they do come out with a camera like they should have already, I'd be happy for it. But even so, at this point, I think we've straight out learned that they are not listening to us. And the pathetic salesman talk of "Before the D90 there was no demand for a video recording feature on DSLR. Since it became a standard and we receive many requests for improvements" is just ridiculous. As if they hadn't released 4 video capable DSLR's in the meantime. BTW, I'm a devout atheist.

I don't think that they "really screwed up big time". Nikon makes excellent products and release products in predictable cycles.

Canon released a 7d, Panasonic released a GH1. I tried both and was not enticed, decided to hang on to D90 til I find something that satisfies me. In the meantime I rent.

It's not like they ever made video before, like Canon or Panasonic.

why?why?why? i don't understand Nikon... We don't want from them to save the universe. We only need a really simple thing: manual control.

No point obsessing guys :)

It's like you're in love with the idea of a magical update so much that it's an excuse to road block you. When really you gotta remember these problems are mere speed bumps on the road to creativity.

If you want manual so bad, abandon the ship and get a 550D.. I bought my D90 For £750. Sold it for £650. Bought a 550D for £750.

So it cost me £100 extra to get manual control, less jello, more sharpness. At the expense of low light and grain pattern.

Or if you're so in love with the Nikon look, and have a few projects, you can easily and readily rent a Nikon D3S (manual control there :P) for $100 for a weekend.

I really like my D90. But I must say I had been obsessing about the fixes and firmware possiblities. So I decided to divert my thinking and I bought a K3 on a lark, (but didn't know about the screwmount versus bayonet, it's bayonet) I shot a 100' to check it out and remembered how much I like film. But what it also did was help me see how good the D90 is if you want that "film look". I've since had the K3 cleaned up and converted to Ultra16(1.85:1) and will soon be mixing D90 and K3 footage to see what I can come up with.

I'm holding out for Nikon's next offerings.

I feel your pain. I purchased the D90 over the D300 because of video capability only to learn that it was not good at all. I've since tried the D300s and learned its video is a marked improvement due to higher bit rate - and I am really pissed that the D90 doesnt share this same bit rate.

Instead I bought a 7D and have been floored by the difference. I cant even quantify how much better the video is over the D90.

That being said I wont be selling my Nikkor glass or bodies anytime soon, but I am starting to collect nice Canon glass and might convert if Nikon doesnt catch up video-wise.

The D90 takes exemplary photos - and paired with my 17-55 its untouchable. But if I find a Canon equivalent I just might make the permanent switch as its video is that good, and I use the video on a DSLR quite a bit.

don't be. it does. the improvement is not in the codec which remains identical but the image processing, like debayer and nr.

Someone please translate "in the near future"

If the price is right I could make the D90s a second camera to my D300s.

Both camera's are SUPER CHEAP, why not use both? I'm keeping my d90 for my "16mm film look" projects. Not every situation calls for 1080. I'm getting a 550d for the projects that need a "crisper" look.

yeah, the zacuto, what can i say? they spend 10 minutes discussing lens flares and never even consider for a second that it might have been a good idea to use the same lens on all cameras. completely worthless, except to see that film is great and the gh1 looks like video, which we all knew already. :-)

I watched the Zacuto test, then I went on line and ordered 2 rolls of 16mm. Said hello to my D90 and started thinking about a project. As an artist I have to use the tools I have, and most importantly, not let the tools that I "don't" have stop me from creating.

Edit: Thanks to Mattsand I learned how to flatten an image in camera and use ND filters. Here's a short D90 clip.

i believe nikon sources their cmos chips from sony, and were restricted from using them in full 1080p for video.

i had read an article concerning that a while back.

D300s has a Sony manufactured CMOS and records 1080p.

Now, source please or it didn't happen!
