D800 press release

Just saw the motorbike D800 film on vimeo. Look good-ish, but nothing looks sharp. I guess the big story is less rolling shutter, and there it looks like they made some big improvements.

I am seeing moire, but am still giving the exception that it is down sampled to 720p and perhaps didn't have moire' in the original.

Also, has that "baked in" nikon video look in contrast, probably doesn't have a "cine-gamma" type image setting.

Didn't have moire in the original? Unfortunately looks exactly like the moire we've seen for the past 3 years now from most other cameras.

Its early days to judge a cameras potential but all I see is nice video, no filmic quality at all which is surprising as they obviously got a cinematographer to shot this.

I saw the moire at :46 on the bridge's surface area, but I only saw it after I paused at exactly that point. Considering all the old brick bulidings throughout the shoot I expected to see it more to be honest. I've never been much of a good judge on that though, I look more at the overall image. I'm sure by tomorrow people will have seen 36 flaws in the video quality, 1 for every MP! I was impressed at the action shots having stability and it looked pretty darn good at first glance overall. Would like to see a full 1080 version though and more videos. Hell, even the early D90 shoots looked good when done by the right person. Not falling for early high budget flicks...I want to see the worst it can do, but that's just me.

Come on folks, unless you can download the original file, trying to judge moire from a compressed online video is fruitless at best.

It's a web video. It's going to have moire. Any originating format will moire when downsampled impefectly - happens with film to DVD, happens with film to Blu-Ray, and certainly happens when any content gets squished into a tiny little web video. Even the "compressed for upload" edited footage could show artifacts introduced by compression and scaling.

If you want to learn about how the camera will moire (or what the DR is, or what the compression artifacts look like, or how the noise floor appears, etc.) wait until we can get some raw footage of some decent charts. That will expose virtually anything and everything. Until then, it's like calling Great Expectations a poor novel after only reading the abridgment. Just wait until we get the real thing to make judgements.

ANy thoughts on which will be better for video, D800 or D800E?

The D800 has an anti aliasing filter, and the D800E does not.

Hmmm, feels like a bit of a stretch, but I can see people have high hope here (as do I - still have the F3, a couple of FE bodies, and lots of glass from back in the day), and so I'll keep it quiet until the 1080 version is up.

Am I the only one seeing a 1080p version of the film on Vimeo? I turned scaling off and it's still full-screen 1080p.

You're right, the 1080 version is up now. Will head back to take another look.

Edit - Much, much to like and certainly crisper! But that shot at :46 sec is still pretty conspicuous.

D800 for video....the D800E can show moire even in photos, it is made for those who want the highest level of detail possible and plan to take out any artifacts in post

Thanks. I was curious because of the potential down sample of sensor to 1080p being somewhat better, but now feel that D800 is the way to go for sure. - If I go with this camera.
