D800 coming

Nikon rumors are saying the D800 with 1080p is due before years end. I hope Nikon take video features seriously this time especially considering what Canon have been up to.

About time :)

What have they been doing all these years? Making jello?

Is it rumoured to be 1080p 24p? Does it have 720p as well - I would expect so. Welcome to the HD-SLR race Nikon.

I think they will have something, but what Nikon Rumors has listed 1080, 24p etc I wonder why people would buy the D3s? Unless the D800 is going to be $8,000!!

Really? Nikon rumours has been saying 1080p for a while now... I have very little faith that Nikon is going to release a VDSLR with even what the 7D has now. They are sticking to their photography game. I would be very surprised if this mythical d800 has any better video performance than the d90.

I could live with 720p provided it has manual controls and a higher bit-rate than the D90 and doesn't overheat. And has jello on par with canon.... But I'm not getting my hopes up.

I would take a D3s over a 7D any day!!
The D3s video from what they are showing is looking really good and I'd rather have 720p working right than 1080 video with all the issues. None of these cameras are right yet but they will all get it soon enough.

the Nikon video has already improved from the D90. The 300s and the D3s are both better, so I'm guessing the "mythical" D800 or D400 will be even better.

Nikon has always been a year behind canon. But then they came out with a competitive winning product. The open question is... how important is the dslr video market for nikon? After the releases of the d3s and d300s i doubt that a d800 will be a real competitor to the 5DII or 7D. But maybe we will get a big surprise...

Not me. There's no possible comparison. Double resolution counts.

Still rolling shutter, soft focus, moire on the 7D. No right yet either. still good but needs improved also.
When done right, IMHO the Nikon just looks better. I can't wait to see the 1080 from them.

Who came out with the first DSLR with video? Was the D90 first?
I think the video market is important to Nikon or they wouldn't be doing it.
The 7D and the D3s are not even in the same class. You need to compare the D300s and the 7D. or the D90.

...

If you take a few weeks as a basis then you´re right. But for me they both came out approximately at the same time but canon was with the 5DII the winner - of course only in terms of the general dslr video feature...

I think they are both pretty close. Canon seems to wait for Nikon to release something then they do.
Nikon first is a maker of still cameras and I hope they focus on that because they do a good job. But I also think they are planning video on DSLRs to be and important part of all cameras from here on out.
Both the Nikon and Canon need to improve the video. Both are doing good, but neither are a winner yet.

I worked with the d90 for around 10 months. And now 1 week with the 7d. No chance for nikon => manual control + a better datarate makes the difference. But as i said perhaps nikon will surprise us...

More controls are alway better. I've been close to getting the D300s or the 7D. But no rush here so I'm going to wait and see what Nikon puts out in the next few months.

....... I know that you meant "how important is Video in DSLRs for Nikon..."... I just... read this statement and went blank for a moment, imagining that you actually asked how important the Still Photography Market is for Nikon.

Haha... this would have been the joke of the week. I know, i have to improve my english but such things happen to me even in my native language. So, í am sometimes too quick - that´s what my girl friend says...

Actually those are D3s clips. They don't look so bad, certainly better than my D90. Here is more from the guy who shot them:

"All the videos above are 1,280 x 720 resolution, 24 frames/second, shot by Dave Etchells at a Nikon PR event in New York City on 10/20/2009. I unfortunately don't have notes on the ISO each was shot at (way too much going on at the time, and there doesn't appear to be any ISO information embedded in the AVI files to identify them), but to the best of my recollection, all were shot at ISO 5,000 - 12,800, with most in the range of 10,000 to 12,800. I didn't go lower than ISO 5,000 or so, in order to maintain high enough shutter speeds, and didn't go over 12,800 because it looked like the shutter speeds I was getting were high enough to freeze the motion adequately, without introducing additional image noise.
For an action situation like this, I found myself a little frustrated with AF: Contrast-detect AF was way too slow to adjust quickly enough as the acts moved around, and I didn't feel my eyes would be able to discern accurate focus, looking at the LCD screen: The screen was probably sharp enough to do so, but I'd need some sort of a magnifier to be able to see it clearly enough to judge focus from it. What I really would have liked would have been an AF feature in Live View mode that would briefly drop the mirror to perform a phase-detect AF cycle, then return to Live View mode. As it is, my workaround was to try to keep my thumb on the Live View button, to quickly pop back to normal view, hit the AF button, then pop back into Live View."
