D7100 available for preorder

The D7100 will have as much detail as needed to shoot excellent video. That combined with nice colors, pretty good DR and lack of moire and aliasing will make the D7100 a great camera. And on the stills side, well, what can I say. Can't wait to get mine and start shooting pretty images with it.

We don't know for sure what the level of detail is for the D7100, tho early results look good. There is already one short test that shows there is some Moire on the D7100, tho from what i've seen it's not as bad as some of the worst DSLR's in that department. It may end up being a great overall camera, but it's still too early to make a final judgment on the D7100 yet.

Personally I love the Dynamic Range of the D7100 and other Nikons. That's what is drawing my interest the most. Still I can't totally ignore Fine Detail, which the Panasonics are currently showing to be the best. Even the old GH1 seems to have more detail, Tho i've only seen one test of this. That's why I want to see more test comparison videos between D7100 and GH3 or GH2. Or perhaps even a comparison between Nikon D800/600 and D7100.

I think (and I hope) you are right. The coming week I am going to start filming a low budget documentary with the D7100.

I know from experience that you can't dial 0 on sharpness on a Nikon an expect good results. That goes for stills and video. But people keep insisting on shooting with 0 sharpness and voila, that's what you get, a softy image. Also you absolutely need a VR or VRll lens, otherwise the results will never be the same in regards to sharpness. But, to each his own. You've got to live your own reality.

That's the kind of info people need to know. It's always users experimenting that come up with the optimal settings for any camera. For me there is a basic floor of detail I need to see in an image and that is just above the sharpness level of the 5D3. So anytime a camera is above 750 lines, you're likely not to really be bothered by the sharpness and detail level of the image. That's one reason I think the D7100 has a chance to be a special camera. Wide Dynamic Range and great image flexibility overall. you've got the HDMI out, Mic and Headphone input and output. If it had 1080/60p it would be even better. For me the tough choice is between the D7100 and GH3.

The Nikon easily beats the GH3 in dynamic range, colours, and cadence. I'm told the LCD and EVF on the GH3 are a bit dodgy too. I really wanted to like the GH3 but it has a few too many issues. The 1080/60p isn't a big deal for me because I'm shooting with 1.5x Iscoramas to get a 1920x720 frame from 720/60p. The GH3 has a better codec but I'm planning to record everything to a Ninja.

I can't wait to get my hands on one and start experimenting and shooting. Exciting times ahead!

Never used a Nikon before in my life, so it's great to get to know the sharpness trick and all this, that's why I'm here.

Camera set to Neutral

ISO 400
Nikon 85mm f1.4 ais @ f 4
daylight

First frame:
Filmed with Sharpness 0; Contrast -2
in final cut 7 I applied the sharpening filter: intensity 0.13; amount 5.0

Second frame
Filmed with Sharpness 1; Contrast 0
No post effect added

Third frame
Filmed with Sharpness 0; Contrast 0
in final cut 7 I applied the sharpening filter: intensity 0.13; amount 2.5

I opened the file up in FCPX, I'm not sure if the sharpening level is the same as FCP7 but the unsharpened frame looks ok up to a sharpening amount of 4. The best way to test sharpening is to shoot a scene that has a lot of contrast and a bright background, I shot a plant with a white wall in the background and studied the edges of the leaves for halos.

Neutral with 0 contrast or standard with the contrast all the way down is about equal to prolost on the 5D, anything flatter than that like neutral with the contrast dialled down might be problematic with an 8 bit colorspace.

After a month of testing and use I returned my d5200 and replaced it with a d7100 today. First impression is that the d7100 has better resolution. I would say about 15% more rez. The moiré and aliasing are non existing with the video I shot indoors. But I still see the horizontal fixed pattern noise in the blacks at all iso levels and in M an S modes, using several in camera and custom picture profiles, along with several good Nikon and Sigma lenses. I can also see the FPN on the HDMI output with my Cineroid EVF and on my Panasonic and LG screens set to 1080p. This really sucks because it would no doubt be outputted to any external recorder that I may want to use. The FPN was one of two reasons for returning the d5200, plus its poor overall resolution. I had such high hopes of moving into an APS C size sensor beyond using a GH2 or GH3. Here is one of the original clips @ iso 1600 https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B8wLh-lXpR-ZNTFIUW9UYkl5NTg/edit?usp=sharing

I can't wait to see some more video of the D7100 in comparison to the GH3, which are the main cameras i'm considering right now. It's good to hear that it's got even more detail than the D5200.

Unless Nikon can come up with a fix for the FPN.

What ISO's are you shooting at?
