D7100 available for preorder

It is a 24mp Toshiba sensor, just "tuned" and without olpf for the d7100. I've read that several places, but I've seen so many D7100 links I'm not going back to fine em...lol ;)

Nothing's 'Pro' version of anything, until they lose the DSLR shape altogether and include Audio IN jacks. Sorry.

Can we just drop this absurd "pro" talk once and for all. Ask a sound engineer if they consider the 16bit A/D converters on most "pro" video cameras to be "pro" quality. Hooking up a mixpre-D to a DSLR will likely produce better sound than the XLR inputs on a lot of "pro" cameras. If you want "pro" sound you hire a sound recordist with an SD 702. And what the hell does shape have to do with anything, the DSLR is exactly what I want it to be: a sensor in a box with a 35mm lens mount. HD-SDI is the "pro" feature I miss. Your logic suggests 35mm film cameras aren't "pro". Toys become "pro" when they're put in "pro" hands.

If it has a Sony sensor be afraid, be very afraid, not "pro".

But can you trust any of those statements?

If that's the case there's one way to be sure whether it has a moire issue. Who wants to rip out their D5200 OLPF?

Exactly.

I find it strange that until now we did not see any promotional video done with the d7100. From what I remember the d4, d800 and d600 had one. I don't know for the lower end model.

Nikon is the best at 'tuning' sensors. Just see how they have pushed Sony sensors for max IQ.

The problem is that Sony sensor are prone to moire/aliasing, that is why the d5200 with the Toshiba sensor is so much dicussed here. Until now the Sony sensors have had a quite some moire/aliasing from ok to very bad. Perhaps Sony does not want to have too good sensor in dslr to threaten its video line.

Seeing that the D5200 sensor has no aliasing/moire and still the rolling shutter is not hideous and it can't take lots of fps when shooting stills, I'd tend to think that it has in-sensor binning: if shooting video, when the data leaves the sensor, it's probably 2000x1333 (downsampled from the original 6000x4000; this can happen before or after the ADC). No Sony sensor to date can do that.

It's not 100% mandatory, but if that's so, the video image could have a very small crop with respect to the stills image (1.04x, so it's 1.58x instead of 1.52x, against 1.62x for the Canon DSLRs). Can somebody with a D5200 test if there's this very small difference in FoV between stills and video? Just put it on a tripod, take a still and a short clip, and compare.

I'll ask in the D5200 thread too...

After starting this thread & reading all the posts...

D7000 is a kickass still camera. It's an amazing value in IQ and control. Lately I've wanted to add a third camera to some video projects & found I really like the video it shoots. Yep, ya gotta keep the same things in mind that you do when shooting APS-C Canon... but it's pretty footage.

Every time a new DSLR body comes out, we're all hoping for a breakthrough in video quality - people have been predicting it since the D90 started all of this. Not holding my breath! But I'll likely replace my D7000 with this, if only for the higher rez (I shoot a lot of commercial print projects) and small upgrades like the spot-white balance, which is a freaking awesome idea that will likely be "how can I live without this" when you get used to it.

Found some footage http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2UShBHrFXyE There is some moire but it's 50i so not very conclusive. This one is 30p http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xgKz5-BRPcU

I don't know if I trust those videos. They look like Cell Phone Videos to me. For one thing what's with the unnecessary wide angle view in most of the videos as if he didn't have a zoom lens and couldn't change the angle of view. It just looks suspect to me that someone with a chance to handle a D7100 even briefly wouldn't use more normal angle of view shots so you didn't get barrel distortion. I could be wrong but it just seems strange to me.

Since the FenchelJanisch fake videos to get add money on youtube, I would be very cautious before making any judgement from so called camera footage from unknown sources 1 month before the launch. If I was Nikon I would post some official footage from the camera at launch so that people will see true actual footage and no one would be able to post false one afterward. The second thing, I would sue or get YouTube or whatsoever video site to take down those false footage. That FrenchelJarnish guy could be the sole reason why the D5200 has flown under the radar until lately when eoshd and others have really investigated it and shown its true qualities. Look at the comment on the t4i vs D5200, you would instantly disregard the D5200 as just another nikon video fail, while in reality it is chalenging the top of the line 5dmark3 for 1/4 of the price. Just look at the comment to see the damage to Nikon image.

1 month b4 US launch, I think that guy is in Japan. He has other vids with the D7100 in his hands.
