D600 is out

Nikons digitaltutor movies (http://www.nikondigitutor.com/eng/d600/index.html) for the D600 pretty much confirms that aperture has to be set before entering live view, just like on the D7000. Also no sign of a live histogram during live view. I really thought Nikon had learnt a little about what movie shooters need since the D7000 was released two years ago, and the D800 showed them focusing more on video. But this is a really, really strange decision on Nikons part not to include such important workflow features. Are they trying to protect their D800?

While Sony is bringing out 1080 60p, focus peaking, clean HDMI and XLR connector kit for their a99 (although at a higher price), Nikon is taking a step back in movie features. First impressions of the video quality seems to be very good, and an improvement over the D800, which just makes the loss of important movie shooting workflow features even more frustrating.

Likely there will be two years before we see new full frame cameras from Nikon, and I sure wish they had pushed it a little further with the D600. Now if only I didn't like the Nikon colors so much ...

A99 doesnt have live view histogram neither

Really? I did not know that. Switching to Sony is pretty much out of the questions for me anyway, since I have way to much invested in Nikon primes to go with the Sony Alpha mount. Still they do seem to be the innovators in the DSLR video department right now.

Seriously, though, $3100 for a D600 plus ninja2 sounds like a really sweet deal: full frame sensor with (seemingly) lots of DR and good detail, sending 8-bit 422 to be recorded on Prores, plus a 4.3" 800x480 field monitor. It seems you'd have to use manual lenses exclusively, or fight that dumb aperture-setting thing. Plus, paying $700 more for the A99 would free you from this and give you 1080p60.

True, stupid aperture implementation and lack of live histogram can be overcome by an external monitor and manual lenses. Just a shame we still have create workarounds for stuff that should be easy for Nikon to include. I've been looking at a99 footage, and so far I'm not to impressed. Like the look of the D600 video much better, but early days yet of course.

For a dslr I would rather opt for a pix220, thus having xlr and nice preamps on-board.

I downloaded the video from vimeo and noticed moire on very fine details (1:02 on the backpack and the lens ring, 3:45 on water).
Overall the IQ and dynamic range are really good IMO

The shot at 3:46 shows lots of aliasing and much lower resolution. I tend to think that shot was shot at 720p since the rest of the footage doesn´t look anything similar to that. I am really impressed with this camera. I think it captures better video than the D800 (less aliasing, maybe even a bit more resolution, and highlights seem to be a bit better) and for the price it is just crazy.

Looks like I can stop waiting for the D400!! Having just finished a film using my DVX100b and I'm looking forward to NOT using tapes again. I'll wait for some reviews but so far the D600 looks really pretty nice.

If you don't need slowmotion, it seems that the d600 could be the best Dslr deal. Will have to wait about the gh3 to be sure. But when you think that for about $ 3000 you can have a D600 and a Ninja with 422 propres, peaking, false color, etc it becomes a very compelling system. For an additional $ 700 you can either get a Sound devices mixpre-D with the best mixer audio quality or better still buy a sound devices Pix 220. So that you get the 422 prores recorder and the best sound recorder in the same box. The Sony xlr adapter is itself quoted to cost about $ 800. So for about the same price than the sony and xlr adapter you get a Nikon D600 and Sound devices Pix 220 prores and audio recorder!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Below, the guy who did the video responded this on the vimeo page when someone asked him about the aperture thing.

You can change the aperture. Often we took a quick initial shot and then looked at the histogram. Run the video for a second or so...... Overall it felt very good working with the camera on the video side. We were very impressed with the dynamic range!

Watched the downloaded video. I find it very very good. little aliasing (have to really search for it) and I saw moire once in one guy shoulder strap and another time a see like very faint moire in the water ripples at 3.45 and with there clothes there could have been a lot more. Very detailed and gorgeous dynamic range. Some rough shots in the car etc that seems to handle rolling shutter quite well. There is one place when the guy is in silhouette with a very gradual fade and no real banding.

I really was hoping for Sony to deliver what I expected, but as far as footage goes so far, the D600 is the winner for me. That´s some really nice looking imagery coming out of the Nikon!

I have been scrubbing the webs, but cannot find any information about the "Nikon WU-1b" and whether it can activate the record video function in Live view. Anyone know about this? I think the D4 video can be remotely started.
