D600 is out

You beat me to it macgregor. I was just about to post the same video. And I agree, it does look great. Would love to see it without youtube compression though.

Edit: Been looking at this video for a while now, and some of those wide vista shots are really sharp to come from a DSLR. Highlight rolloff, and dynamic range looks really nice as well.

Not bad.

Looks like Canon made the D700 replacement (5Dmk3) and Nikon has made the 5Dmk2 replacement (D600).

Interesting that Nikon has announced preorders before Photokina. Makes one wonder what next they have to announce.

My only concern is the sharpness and detail. Difficult to judge with youtube. The rest like dynamic range, rolling shutter and general image quality seems very good.

I just bought a D800 and love it madly, but have to say the D600 has me scratching my head. For video purposes anyway, let's see: it's a grand cheaper and the big tradeoffs are...hmm...

???

Well, I can determine for myself based off either the Youtube or Vimeo clips that I like what I see so far. Any information on if this was recorded uncompressed?

Still no real-time histogram in Live View mode? I have a Nikon D5100, and though it produces gorgeous still photos, the lack of a histogram display forces me to rely on the camera's light meter to set exposure. That in turn makes auto-ISO Aperture Priority mode the most practical way to shoot stills, with the camera setting exposure by adjusting ISO as needed. For the shutter, I preset minimum and maximum speeds, which the camera respects so long as it can set exposure correctly within the selected shutter speed range.

Without a histogram to track exposure levels, it's hit-or-miss using the D5100 in Live View manual-exposure mode, and unless there's something I missed, the D600 will share that limitation. Although I've found the D5100's semi-manual Aperture Priority mode to be quite adaptable to shooting video, I expect D600 users who are accustomed to setting exposure manually will dislike relying on Nikon's auto-ISO features in video mode.

I see less aliasing and slightly better dynamic range in the highlights than on the D800. I hope to see some charts soon!

Really hope that is not the case sine the D800 has a histogram in live view, and it would be real shame not to include it here. Another pretty disturbing rumor I'm hearing is that the aperture may not be controllable while in live view. That it works like on the D7000 where you must set the aperture before entering live view (unless your using manual lenses with an aperture ring of course).

I guess we will find out soon.

For people that are weighted towards stills, but still want better than average video, this d600 might do the trick... I'd probably bite if I see more footage and like more...Nikon eh?
