D5200 Anyone got it ???

Here are links to new test with Flaat11, I had to open up half a stop on GH2 to match exposure,

Nostalgic all -2 on GH2, Flaat11 on Nikon, not changed.
focus on letters on the box.

Samuel, thanks again for your hard work!

PS, graded material in Prores HQ. Hard to notice any significant increase in lattitude in D5200 footage, upon bringing material to the same luma and chroma levels. Perceptualy significant difference is the resolution, GH2 seem to resolve more detail.
link to graded files, with compression and 10% added sharpness in Compressor.

I actually like how croma clips on metal parts on GH2.

Rigs, have you actually tested them to see the difference in DR? autofocus is faster, more accurate, allowing to lock it, on GH2, the colors, possibly more accurate, but that's matter of taste, further CC, I like it a lot, possibly better than 5dmk3, for that matter both a bit soft, not really match to Epic or C100, C300, from my POV, for event videography, probably D5200 is the best DSLR, overall. Just not as sharp, as GH2.

@OlegKalyan
Have you tested all the above cameras? I have tested the my GH2 along side the D5200, Way more lattitude with the Nikon. I dont care for auto focus, sure the GH2 is probably better. If you like the green look of the GH2 and the color shift when you hit record thats cool. I'm in production right now using the d5200 as a B cam to a red Epic and we do shot C300 as well. Judging from your test your out of focus on the d5200 and blacks are crushed to hell. The GH2 looks sharper (not the look I want) and look at the blue channel of any hacked footage on the GH2 and you can see its weakness against the d5200.

Rigs, it is in focus, I've presented another test, with the crop area as well on both cameras.
Green look can bother, however knowing how to adjust the color on GH2 is good to know.
Good to hear that you in production with different mentioned cameras. Would be great to see how it compares.
Will you post some? Curious to see what kind of look you're going for?

The look I am going for (as most filmmakers), with rare exceptions, is getting the most RGB information 0 to 255
in each particular shot within overall look constraints.
No more, no less, usually, always, it happens less due to camera, sensor, signal recording limitations.
In latest test, I did a quick CC, getting the most range out of both cameras. You can push it harder, more clipping will
occur.

Forget about the GH2. that's ancient history. We are now to up to the GH3, a much improved camera overall. If anything, comparisons, which by themselves are a total waste of time to those investing their time doing them, should be with the GH3. More DR, less DR, same DR arguments are truly overrated Just go out and shoot a worthy and lengthy piece like Philip, Barry, and many top notch pros do to test a new camera and then we can discuss how the D5200 holds up. As soon as the D7100 comes out I am planning to buy it and do just that. Then I'll know for sure how it will work out.

GH2 holds up well, still, if one does not need high ISO, I's say up to 640, GH3 rarely available in Europe, still.
Personal view forums and many tests by respected colleagues show that GH2 resolves more detail than GH3. For sure more so, compared to D5200, in latitude they seem to be pretty equal. Reportedly GH3 has better range.

Going out and shooting the footage has nothing to do with testing cameras, I do it for living, the first.
Teaser, shot most of the wedding, a few weeks ago, D5200.

Only a careful test can show advantage and limitations of cameras (scientific or not)

(Most of what Philip does is heavily graded, heavily mixed with music score, with all respect! Hard to see where is camera and where Philip). Barry does very scientific tests, showing camera's specifics.)

Well, believe or not all the films on movie houses and television series ARE heavily graded. That's the way it works. The only way to find out if a camera works for you or not is to try and use yourself. If you feel it works for you then you keep it. If you feel it doesn't then send it back to the shop.

John, I like all my cameras, for different reasons, (like all the women in my life )
Still figuring out strengths and weakness, knowing them, helps!
Cheers!

I'm busy heavily grading. I'll post it as soon as my poor little mac finishes compressing for vimeo.

Despite all the work the lads have done the GH2 has major hardware limitations, namely 9 stops of dynamic range and poor low light ability. Is the D5200 a replacement for the GH2? Well that depends on what is more import to you, higher resolution or more dynamic range, better colour, and better low light ability. The D5200 isn't perfect, the jello is an issue if you wanna run around like a maniac, and the codec isn't great, but for a lot of shooting scenarios its very good and from what I'm seeing it can produce gorgeous images comparable to far more expensive cameras.

rigs, if you could post some comparisons, that would be helpful. I have heard people say that the D5200 has better dynamic range, but I've yet to really see it. And I'm not sure that what they are calling a two stop advantage in DR is not actually a cleaner two stops at the bottom in low light shooting at a high ISO.

Good words from Down Under!

Looking at frames from what I shot yesterday it looks like there's no line skipping. Video frames look like 2k jpegs (with a lot of compression). I'm seeing a lot of fine detailing I'm not used to seeing in DSLR video. If Nikon can get the rolling shutter down on the D7100 it could just be the baby Alexa I've been waiting for.

Oleg, that is such a quote...! LOL

BTW, I am in Rome but I'm flying to Moscow, tomorrow. Hope to have the chance to meet this humor personally, I'll take a look on your vimeo page.

PS: Funny, are you also based in Montenegro? I've just seen something shot there. We have a branch in Podgorica.

squig, I think D5200 is perfect camera for Event videos, weddings, etc. Not quite enough resolution when it comes to narrative work, it looks like DSLR :) not Aleksa, imho.
GH2 to me is more cinema camera with it's known limitations. I've not found better latitude, range on D5200, on paper is should be..
Welcome more tests from the users, compare it with different cameras, DSLRs.

(Emanuel, please call me +79255174301 would be great to meet! my email olegkalyan@gmail.com
in Montenegro shot a wedding, do not live there)

Sure, I will. Thanks for your generosity :) Even because I am always concerned to find the right way when I try to decode cyrillic in my journeys through those beautiful stations of Moscow subway :D

I fully understand you on the beauty of russian female... I've been losing myself too! LOL I guess one of these days, it can really happen to have something of my own -- personal stuff, though ; ) among your lovely portfolio of wedding videos ;))

And yes, I agree with you on narrative work, even though for some narrative work, these small non-expensive cameras can shine. This feature has been shot in NZ with a 5D Mark II:

My last bet with my partner is to add some wide shots from GH series (4K stills shot in burst mode already made in Ljubljana and Belgrade), and the new 1DC in Moscow, Kiev and Montenegro. We are also permanent based in this beautiful balkan country. Anything you need, you already know where to bell :)

couple of originals, 25 mb each, D800e with mosaic filter, and D5200, let me know what you think, same settings, Lpowell 0.8.
I think they are pretty close, with slight edge to D800e, and proof that no moire will be in the shot, with D5200 you can catch it once in a while.
D800e is full frame, better, more use of Nikon glass.

The Mosaic filter makes zooms not parafocal, IIUC. But the much less rolling shutter on the 800 makes it a better choice... albeit a much more expensive one.

Yes, using zooms on same focal distance, is not possible. Culprit for fast, reportage kind of work. but for that broadcast camera's better. or something like AF100.

"it can really happen to have something of my own -- personal stuff, though ; )"
Emanuel, I've got mine!)

Ok here's my first effort shot with the D5200.

I deliberately blew the highlights in the grade for effect, if you don't like it I don't care. I shot it on the shoulder with a Nikon 105mm f/2.5 ai, @ 100 ISO, neutral, 3 sharpness (a bit too sharp), everything else set to 0. Transcoded to ProRes 442HQ, graded in magic bullet looks, no post sharpening.

Download the Mp4 from the file menu (the viewer is heavily compressed), it looks almost identical to the 5Gb ProRes file.
