D5200 Anyone got it ???

No white balance k adjustment! Damn they had to do something to screw this thing didn't they.

This from the manual-

  • I (sodium-vapor lamps): 2700 K
  • J (incandescent)/
    I (warm-white fluorescent): 3000 K
  • I (white fluorescent): 3700 K
  • I (cool-white fluorescent): 4200 K
  • I (day white fluorescent): 5000 K

  • H (direct sunlight): 5200 K
  • N (flash): 5400 K
  • G (cloudy): 6000 K
  • I (daylight fluorescent): 6500 K
  • I (high temp. mercury-vapor): 7200 K
  • M (shade): 8000 K
No 3200 or 5600k!

You can assign the function button to white balance from a grey card or copy a white balance from a photo stored on the SD card.

I have to say that I highly doubt the output of lightbulbs or the sun ever match the K settings inside any camera within 200K.

Yeah, toward the end when the camera moves aren't so jumpy...there are some very telling shots- this is not the stuff of a 1st gen V DSLR. Lots of detail, everything pops. Had a play with one at Best Buy on Monday...did a couple of quick checks on some fine lines- looked really really good.

I've graded that youtube video and added some grain and it looks great! still lots of detail, it has more resolution @ 5Mbps than the 5D MKIII! I won't say this camera is the bomb until mine gets here, but I think it will be, especially with a hyperdeck or a ninja.

Nikon have lodged a patent for a 16-35mm F/2.8 VR lens, it would be a perfect match for this camera.

Heck of a camera for the price..it really seems to be the whole (budget) package. It still has that look in no/low light though...iso up and you lose your dr. That's something that the more expensive cameras have a handle on.

Not from what I'm seeing. You have to remember that most of the footage available hasn't been shot by professionals, most of it is just standard profile with auto exposure. I'm seeing more shadow detail even on standard than the 5D with a flat profile. I won't know for sure until I do Samuel's tests but I think it has 1-2 stops more latitude than the 5D. This thing looks like it's in 1DC/C300 territory! Ok there I said it, now somebody prove me wrong.

I'm just praying it doesn't have some fatal flaw, I want my baby Alexa!

Played around with a D5200 at Best Buy and it was pretty impressive. Didn't really have a chance to do much but it's a small camera and small grip. I have normal size hands and it was not a deep enough grip to really get a comfortable grip. It has a very crisp LCD. What I did notice was that at least on the live View LCD there was some pretty awful Rolling Shutter. You can't move this camera in any kind of quick motion without getting sea sick looking at the LCD. I think this is a camera that will love being locked off more than others. They had the SD card slot locked off so no footage :(

Andrew Reid mentioned that the rolling shutter looked worse on the LCD than it does on the recorded footage....I hope that doesn't mean the HDMI out will be jello infested.

Now that I think about it, whatever part of the processor that controls the output to the LCD is not very strong in Nikons, cuz they had that choppy playback when trying to view them punched in for focusing on the D800. This seems like a Nikon issue but likely has nothing to do with the HDMI output if it's the same as on the D800. I'm pretty sure it's a common Nikon issue now that I think about it.

It has the same expeed 3 processor as the D800 and D4 so the HDMI out should be ok....fingers crossed.

Man that 1st video at the Ikea was REALLY impressive. I must say that i'm very intrigued by this camera at this point. So crisp and clean at ISO 3200. Imagine how good this cam can get with more time to learn how to tweak it? I really want to see how it looks with a Flat profile and Ninja recording. That should really make for amazingly strong editable footage.

IThe footage John posted is nice, but consistent with what I'm seeing in other clips - zero detail in the blacks at high iso.

There's zero detail because everything's been shot with standard profile with 0 contrast. As soon as I get mine I'll start messing with the picture profiles and try the flaat profile from the D800. Samuel's going to look at my tests, measure the DR, and figure whether he needs to create a new profile. Shooting stills this thing is rated at 13.9 stops, 2 stops over the 5D. Sure it won't do that in 8bit but the C100 can manage 12 stops so I don't see why it wouldn't have at least a stop over the 5D in video mode.

The more I see from this, the more I like this camera.

How is white balance adjustment? Those settings from a page or so back looked weird to me, but I've never really messed with Nikon DSLR's before, so maybe it's just their language.

I'm getting very interested in this little guy

Another thing is that Nikonrummors is saying that the replacement of the D7000 is coming before April. If they use the same sensor, we could have very good image quality with a much better body.
