D5000 on Nikon 's Sweden web site

heh they shot that promo clip here in sydney

the morons didn't even lock exposure

It doesn't look any sharper than the stuff I've shot at the beach here.

Come on people, have some sense. Nikon's not going to design the camera solely just for you people. This is a D60 refresh. Not surprised that the movie mode remains the same.

Well, we just tought for a minute that cameras are suppose to evolve, be better with the next model. They should have lowered the price of the D90 to $899.00 and save themselves a lot of money lauching the same camera with a new number. It is just silly.

"The d-movie mode was designed by children"

LOL!!!!!! That's a riot!

That's not the point. The point is Nikon is trying to position this thing to consumers as a DSLR and a camcorder replacement.

"D-Movie lets you record beautiful high-definition (HD) movie clips with sound. The camera’s large image sensor and high ISO sensitivity offer exceptional image quality."

Interestingly this is only mentioned on the euro sites not in litigation happy USA. It's a pretty dodgy statement.

It's certainly made for children......however my kid is 3 and she's already shooting well composed stills.

Don't compare the D90 with the D5000. Compare it with the D60; that's the camera this one is replacing. If you look at it that way, the D5000 is better than the D60.

Also, the video mode rivals that from most compact cameras. Of course it doesn't AF, so I'm thinking that's where it needs to be improved first.

It is amazing. This camera is just basically a replica of the D90 with a different LCD and a new number.

Not sure about that. For someone looking to upgrade from D60, the D5000 looks like a fantastic opportunity. Nikon took many of the features from D90, but left some stuff out to discourage D90 users from 'downgrading' -- for example, I speak for myself, that 230k pixel LCD on the D5000 (vs. the 930k on D90) alone is a deal-breaker.

The low price of the new camera is great, but still not a strong enough incentive even for those thinking considering jumping on the DSLR bandwagon; Iwould think they are better off with a D90, or waiting for the anticipated D400.

So 3 questions remain

1 have they upped the bit-rate?
2 does it overheat?
3 which one of you suckers is gonna be the crash test dummy?

I reckon as head of the D90 fan club John should volunteer

I'll go to the 59th St. bridge, (it runs between Queens and Manhattan for those not familiar with it) and look for an empty spot on Rossevelt Island bellow, then throw it really high in the air and see how it crash lands and magically breaks into a few thousand pieces! Then I'll deducted it from my next years taxes!
