D400 just a rumor

"And, no, before the rumors start flying that say that I know something about what's going to happen that week, no, I don't. "Out of my hat" means I made it up. It's a wild guess." -from Thom's blog about the d400.

I'll say June 15th. But it will be a D90s, not the D400. The D400 will be announced in December. The 11th I think!! That could change so don't hold me to it.

I'm just kidding of course but do you remember when Nikon would come out with the "s" models to improve the camera? I have a N90s and a D70s for example. They could improve the D90 and just go with a D90s.

They wouldn't have to change their production lines much in Thailand.

If they are winding down production of d300's, it makes more sense to me that they would announce a d400 or equivalent sometime near the end of the year.

I still keep coming back to the reality that their bread and butter are photographers. Most people who just bought d90's would not upgrade to an s version just for some improved video capabilities.
Our small contigent might do that, but would it really be worth it for Nikon?

and fast otherwise I'm getting a GH1 next week.......I've been going cold turkey for a week since I sold the D90 and I have all these new lenses to play with.....c'mon nikon just a teaser, something, anything.

I'm waiting till they come out with the upgrade. No hurry right now for me. I want a new camera but ok with what I have at the moment.
I would give it a couple of weeks!!

I'm tired of rumors. When will Nikon release some real meat?

What's up with the D400? When is it coming out? What can it do? Talk to me Nikon. Talk.

With Canon and Panasonic releasing such products and firmware updates, you think Nikon would do, or at least say, something...

They will, I´m pretty sure. After all that Nikon is under pressure to act. The D400, and I guess a second one, is just around the corner. And they can´t fob us off only with 1080/720p/24p. Manual control is a must have now. They know + they´ll make it - there is too much to lose...

I knew MKii controls existed. I would be HIGHLY surprised if Nikon does anything about Manual Controls or anything else with the video in this generation. D400 included.

Maybe 1080/24P. But there's always a gamble.

Good luck.

Canon, panasonic and pentax are all doing manual control so why wouldn't nikon? They were the first to market with the D90.

You can bet that if I fork out for a MKII nikon will come out with something better shortly afterwards.

I found a place nearby where I can rent a MKII for the weekend so I might get it for the stills shoot and shoot some test footage under CFLs and sodium vapor and see if I can control the scrolling waves with a 1/50th shutter.

Yeah, I'm not expecting much from the D400 at this point. And manual controls is a must for me.

So the 5D or Gh1 is very tempting, but I want to give Nikon about a month to do something. Because switching systems is an expensive hobby, and I'd rather have manual controls sooner than later. When I bought the D90 the idea of manual video controls on a video still camera was laughable, now it's the norm. :Drogar-Evil(DBG):

I'm sure Nikon will get there, but I don't know how the economy and the poor financial state of the company will affect what type of products they release. It could go either way. They might try and release something that even bends the market even further, or they might not have the resources to do anything new and interesting and release the same rehashed slightly better camera. Only time will tell, and I'm tired of waiting.

Dearest Nikon,
If you're feeling nervous due to the fevered pitch surrounding Canon's announcement of manual controls for their 5Dmkii and now want to do the same for the video mode of your current or any upcoming cameras I'm on board with that, but please please please realize that the biggest problem with your D90 is the recording codec. The bitrate is too low fellas. You can add all the manual controls you want and it wont help the largest problem you have. Please understand this.

Yours,
Ethan Cooper

bs. the lack of manual control is a much bigger issue. the image quality isn't great but it's enough for many purposes, while the lack of manual control is starting to become a dealbraker.

(also, it's not just the bitrate, the image quality is already limited by the sampling and the processing)

there is some really good video from the D90. They could fix the problems pretty easy. That would be a good start. No reason for them not to and maybe some other improvements

nah, i can't use 30p anyway. it's a great camera and i have access to one that i use once in a while, but owning one for dramatic productions just doesn't make sense.
