D400 just a rumor

Here is the set up. Nikon lets Panasonic gets everyone talking about the GH1. We start hearing about some issues with the camera. There always are issues. Then right before the release of the GH1, Nikon announces the D400 or something. New and improved and they undercut the GH1 price too.

At least that is what I would do if i was selling cameras.

Where is the best place to find out updates regarding potential upcoming cams? Where do people hear the first word?

but alas, those are only rumour places, and it doesn't look like any other news has yet hit regarding the D400. I wonder if releases will even take place in June.

Did we ever get confirmation that Nikon was releasing two more cams at that time?

just found this on nikonrumors-

Had heavy discussions with reps from Nikon (was at recent d5000 launch). I put forward my belief that a new DX (possibly D400) would be out June/July. The response was a wry smile and a feint nod of the head. I then stated that I believed the ‘hi-res’ mini (D700x for want of a better name) would be out in October. His response - “closer to November” Other rep just smiled knowingly. May be nothing to it, but seems to fit with predictive timelines.”

Sold my D90 yesterday. Now it's up to nikon to get it right with the D400 or I'm gonna defect and get a GH1.

Alright, so... It will be out June, which means we should get specs reasonably soon??

yeah I reckon they will announce it by the end of this month, certainly by mid june....I can't hold out much longer, getting shutter happy....need a fix. The pentax K-7 is out in 3 weeks and could throw a spanner in the works.

man, really going to be a long month.. Too anxious to hear what's coming. Need to make my decision by mid June.

Interesting. Hopefully the D400 will be competitive and not just a more expensive D90. I wonder if we'll only see one or two improvements to the D400's video mode, and then the rest will be fixed by the time the D750/800 or whatever it is called comes out? Hopefully they don't do something like this because then we'll have to wait even longer and pay more money.

I also wonder what Canon might do with an eventual 60D. With the GH1 and if Nikon delivers a D400 with an awesome video mode plus all the fixes the D90 needs, then I don't think that Canon can afford to sit still any longer and give us the same pain-in-the-rump 30p video modes the 5Dmk2 and that new Digital Rebel have.

Its already been a really long year with the wait for the Scarlet, then the extremely disappointing Canon T1i and its 20p, after that the disappointing Nikon D5000, the Pany GH1 is still not technically out beyond Japan, and now we have to wait just to hear the specs on a D400.

Besides the $7,000+ Scarlet, we can all see how the tech in these video capable DSLR's could make our lives much much easier if someone would just release an HVX170 style camera with this tech and an interchangeable lens mount. I think for a really comprehensive cinema camera, besides the Red stuff, we'll all have to wait another 1.5 to 2 years.

Hopefully the D400 gives us at least manual controls.

Manual controls and 1080, im sold. If they fix the jello or increase the bit rate, then sweet, but as long as manual controls are in, it's enough for me until the next gen comes out.

Well, there is really no reason for them to not increase the bit rate on the mjpeg codec. If you have a chance, take a look at the two mjpeg clips Kholi posted from his Japanese GH1.

I thought mjpeg was the wrong road to go down codec-wise, but if Nikon can up the bit rate and make it look as good or better than the GH1's mjpeg, then that would be great.

im literally counting down the days until June. So much excitement to come!

At least in this case, there is still the alternate option of getting a GH1 if the D400 ends up being a turd. If you already have Nikon lenses then those will work with the GH1 too if you get the lens adapter.

To stop me buying a GH1 Nikon has to include manual control, up the bit-rate to 40-50Mbps and fix the overheating. Rumor has it that the D400 has a new sony sensor so there might be less jello too.

The only area where the GH1 appears to be lacking is in dynamic range. At 40-50Mbps mjpeg starts to look like the stills out of the D90. That would give the D400 the edge over the GH1 and the 5DMKII as far as filmic quality goes.

My wishful thinking: a further developed Mjpeg like DVCPROHD, 1920x1080 + 1280x720p, Datarate around 50 (minimum), 24 + 50 fps for both (pal land), full manual control, swivel LCD..... That would be fine... ;-)

D400 should be = Manual controls 720p/24 & 720p/60 with avchd @ 24mbps. That would keep me from jumping on GH1. Autofocus in Video Mode would be the nail in the coffin!

Cheers

Well I'm hoping Nikon comes up with something good. I'll wait for them. Would there be a show that they might announce coming up?

for the record the main problem with the d90 image in my semi expert opinion is not the compression. just look at the live view. zoom in a bit and take a good look, it's just as soft uncompressed. the compression adds artifacts but it's not responsible for the soft look. a better debayer and noise reduction algorithm is definitely needed, plus it needs to use more pixels from the sensor and scale down rather than just skipping 90% of them.
