D400 just a rumor

Nikon isn't going to get it right for a while. RED has gone through 3 builds and still have yet to get it exactly right, and they a team dedicated to just video. Come April whatever, Nikon is gonna let you guys down.

Nikon has been around a lot longer than the RED team. Nikon still does it better than most and has been making great cameras for years. If they do better than the D90 they will have another winner.

Gotta agree, though we want different. It's the reality at this stage. The GH1 is going to be a disappointment too! Every time there is high expectations, it almost never pans out in the immediate. It's image will not live up to the desire of what many of us want. The next to look for will be Canon's 2nd gen HDDSLR. I don't consider the rebel a 2nd. However the 60D will be a 2nd gen attempt on Canon's part. They have had well enough time to either work out issues and get the manual control right since the release of the 5d MII from last year. That said, were talking Canon. They seam to be limp Dic# a lot before they get it right.....

Still doesn't mean we can't dream, and have hopes that our dream camera gets closer to being reality.

And for RED; well that company and it's mission is awesome. They are the only true revolution going on in Digital camera systems. I'm glad they exist.

i'm not picky..the d90 would've been fine for me if it had a manual shutter and the bitrate was a little bit better. the gh1's 2x crop isn't an issue after using the d90's 1.5x. so if the gh1 has a better bitrate, which on paper it does and manual shutter, which it does, then the gh1 will not disappoint. it's panasonic who seems to rarely disappoint.

I've been studying the spy photo's of the new Nikon camera http://www.engadget.com/photos/mystery-nikon/1473369/ and It appears to be the replacement for the D60 rumored to be called the D5000. It's not the D400/500 because it doesn't have an LCD data display and pro function controls on top like the D300. The other interesting thing I noticed is there's 1 more mode on the function control wheel that the D60 doesn't have, could this be for manual movie mode? I think this cam's movie mode will be very similar to the GH1 but probably only 720p. Whether or not it can record continuously without overheating remains to be seen.

The D5000? appears to be a certainty for April 14. I think there's still a very good chance of the D400 announcement too and hopefully it will have even better movie features with 1080p and a codec on par with the 5D MKII.

There's been some discussion here about whether Nikon could get it right this time. Well I don't see why not. Canon got it almost right with the 5D but deliberately crippled it. Nikon certainly would have heard the criticism of the D90 and learned from it and they have a lot more competition now. The worst case scenario is that the GH1 will be available as a useable interim stop gap for low budget digital filmmaking until we get the full frame high bitrate/raw camera we all dream of.

But Nikon doesn't have to worry about getting right or wrong because they make still camera's.

Yeah they do.

The D90 was first to market but since then there are better video capture options from canon and panasonic. Nikon has to protect there stills market share by providing better video options. I've followed some stills forums and movie mode is a deciding factor for a lot of the amateur photographers. It would be bizarre for Nikon not to improve on the D90......If that were the case we'd still be shooting with FM2's.

Nikon can also steal a lot of camcorder sales and they know it hence the flip-out LCD.

You are right Nikon just isn't going to blow off the video sales part of this,,even if you are not a filmmaker to have the option of make a nice video on vacation with your still camera is a great idea.

nikon d90 takes excellent video now, so how are they going to get it more "right" for photographers. i never said they were going to blow it off, but i don't believe they'll improve their movie mode any more than what they have now to cater to filmmakers. leave that up to canon or panasonic or even RED, but not Nikon. if that were the case, d90 would've had a firmware several months ago. still waiting for that. people were only asking for a better bitrate which they could've done. i'm optimistic , so i'm up for whatever. the only thing they can do to improve their movie mode for photographers is by putting fluff on their products by mentioning "full hd" and what not. not "50mbps bitrate with full manual control" because nikons demographics are photographers who don't care about all the movie features we want, which are the people that make nikon a ton of money.

Remember the problems with the D200? How long did it take Nikon to fix those problems. But from what I've seen the video is pretty good.

The 90 and the 400(?) are toys

You are right they have great holiday video mode - they are holiday cameras after all

You may note that Nikon excluded 'toy video' on thier last 'professional' camera - the D3x

My guess is that nikon are working on video very hard and we will see proper RAW, controllable wonderment in thier next 'professional' camera - which I would guess will be the called the D4 and have a pretty scary pricetag ($8000)

If not RAW they could may include a jpg stills capture at 25fps - the D3 already does stills at 13FPS (in DX mode)

Another guess, considering their apparent hushed relationship with sony (look at the Alpha/D3x specs) is that a Sony Alpha may be released a few months prior - of course the threat to sony video could be a problem

it is also my guess that this camera could be a year or two away

look at the history of nikon digital vs canon digital - they have always been a year or two behind at the pro end - and eventually produced 'winners'

nikon d90 takes excellent video now

I am a professional photographer and videographer who owns a D90 since the first week it came out. My conclusion, well known around here, is photo quality is excellent, movie mode sucks. Video quality on the D90 is non-existent. 90% of the videos I've seen shot with it look bad at some point or another if not altogether. Nikon has to step up their video side of their next camera. I want to be able to use my next VDSLR to take pics and video for the papers (and their websites) I do work for. A single camera, two income streams. The camera has to be reliable on both sides, especially for those of us who will benefit professionally from it.

see that's what I'm sayin photographers want good video from a DFSLR. it's not like nikon have that many new stills features to entice new sales or upgrades.
