D4 - uncompressed hdmi?

D4 Q&A http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/nikon-d4/nikon-d4A.HTM#live-qa

It is 1080p and not 1080i over the HDMI out according to the Nikon rep.

Seems to be infering 1080P output - but what frame rates are available?

Quoted from the article....

"Even more unusually, it's possible to have the live feed piped to the D4's HDMI port as an uncompressed full HD signal, allowing it to be recorded using an external device and/or routed to an external monitor. If desired, this signal can be mirrored on the camera's own LCD display at the same time. Note that when streaming to the HDMI port, the D4 doesn't write to the CF or XQD card slots, however."

So you cant use the HDMI output for monitoring whilst recording to the internal card storage...who came up with that idea?

I think you can, but either with menus overlayed or at a lower quality.

Good call.....

The D4's HDMI is 4:2:2 8bit as stated by Nikon, -but what does "uncompressed" mean? Exactly how is 1080P output via HDMI port?

Uncompressed means that you're not using the in-camera H.264 compression, instead allowing the external device to record in the desired or supported format for editing. In order to get full 1080p output from the HDMI port for external recording, both memory cards must be removed from the camera. That's what triggers the full 1080p output from the HDMI port for recording. When recording to either of the two memory cards, the HDMI output for monitoring is only for monitoring purposes, not suitable for recording.

Possibly a 1080i/720p signal with graphic overlays.....

But WHY ist that so? Whats's the reason for this?

It's pretty simple. The electronics can't output HD to both the memory chips and HDMI at the same time. It would take more power and faster chips. But, heh, uncompressed via HDMI for recording is fantastic.

Please everyone, stop calling it UNCOMPRESSED output. What camera does output a compressed via HDMI? None.
Call it clean output, or 1080p output.

Hm, ok. So i need an external recorder to get the best quality. Compared to my Nikon D7000, that has an awefull video quality i am forced to fiddle around with addional equipment to get the best quality out of the camera - not really a thing i want to have to do..as an option ok..but not a "must do"

Damn, i really liked the idea of having a D4...

I see i'm parroting someone else's post. (great minds...) This strategy makes huge sense. For most types of vid shooters assigned to capture for netcasting, the internal compressed CODECS will be fine. For those assignments that can benefit from the uncompressed out to a recorder, then why would you need a duplicate recording internally? Backup i suppose. I imagine you can split the signal out of the HDMI port so you can also feed a monitor as well as the recorder, but wireless to ipad/iphone seems very cool

To get the best quality out of a camera you usually have to go to "additional equipment". But remember the D4 without an external recorder might be more than good enough for what you want? "Why" was shot internally.

Call it clean output, or 1080p output.

True... although the D4 video image isn't exactly clean nor down sampling to resolve a proper 1080p? Surely we should just call it... HDMI output? Hehe

That might be - maybe it fits my needs in any way - i'm just surprised, that it cant give me a clean HDMI output whilst recording to internal cards, that would mean if i use a external monitor i have all the metering infos always visible even if i dont want to see them.

Where did you get the info about WHY was shot internally?

If you read down in the comments section, the guys who worked with the footage said that it was recorded to the cards.
One of them - Jason Bosch - also states that there will be a BTS video.

Just a reminder, this is a compressed h.264 at 10,000 kbs. I worked extensively with the original media and it is all really smooth. No glitch y glitch y at all. I was really impressed with the composure of the Nikon codec, even in challenging compression situations like the heli pans over moving water, and jungle fly bys in lower light environments. This camera dominates over my 5d and 7d that I shoot with extensively. It was a sad day when Jason took my D4 back to Japan. Jason, when can I get that back? ----

All video was recorded internally to CF. Clean HDMI was not confirmed to us at the time of production...although when we hooked up the monitor while on the jib and saw NO menus on screen the gears in our heads started cranking and our mouths watering!!!!

Every camera has compromises. The F3 doesn't do 60p at 1080 internally and the FS100 does. The FS100 doesn't have nd filters. The AF100 has a smaller sensor than most large chip cameras. Th GH2 has poor rolling shutter compared to the AF100. Etc etc. I own the FS100 but if I was buying a camera now I would probably go with the Nikon if it turns out to to be as good as it seems. I have a bunch of nikon glass and I love the build quality of Nikons. The multiple crops is an insane thing. And while I don't NEED full frame it wouldn't hurt to have as an option! Really looking forward to seeing more out of this camera.

@Searcher

I agree to that.

Dont get me wrong, as long as i can use an external monitor during recording internally and still able to judge focus etc then this would be ok. Obviously, when recording externally, ist should be possible to go with a HDMI loopthrough through the Monitor to the external recorder as well, so only 1 more item attached to the rig.. i hate rigs anyway..haha

I would be nice to fade infos out on the ext. Monitor... a 6000 € Camera should be able to do that..otoh its still a stills cam...and i love Nikons and have a lot of good glases around ...even my beloved Iscorama 36 :)
