D4 - uncompressed hdmi?

10bit clean HDMI out? Nikon? Whuuuuh? Hahah, they have no horses in the race, would be a good move. We'll see. They've had some hurt sales by Sony, panny, and Canon this past year. We'll see if they reach out, or just stick to what they know best.

I was wondering about that too.. that would be great, but the D4 I'm sure will be close 5 or 6 grand.

I really doubt high-end video features are having much effect on market share - if that were the case, the D7000 would have had features to put it on top for small-sensor video. Everyone seemed to expect it - didn't happen.

Canon trounced Nikon in 2010 and 2011 for DSLRs overall, with Sony #3 - Panasonic was a blip on the radar, so the GH2 love from filmmakers isn't affecting global market share. In 2011, 8.7% of "interchangeable lens digital cameras" sales was shared among Pentax, Panasonic, Samsung, Sigma, etc.

People seem to forget that filmmakers are likely a very small subset of DSLR buyers. They're not adding features we want unless it's an easy fit in the R&D and manufacturing pipeline. Curious to see how Canon's $20k unit will sell, and what they do in the next year. But for DSLRs, that last three years have had no really exciting developments in DSLRs.

It seems that the rumored Nikon D4 is finally confirmed http://nikonrumors.com/2012/01/05/ni...px/#more-29976 . It has been published I think 1 day too soon. On the video it translate like this

full hd format in h.624, many framerate nd with some first like (entry in line, headphone, sound monitoring and vumeter, uncompressed hdmi that can e use by external recorder(or clean that can be recorded), transition to black...

I don't know if the h.624 is not a typing error. Lets see what Nikon has for us. Apparently they have been investing in a big motorcycle advert in Chicago city center, where the emphasis was a lot on video.

In short:

The Nikon D4 converts Nikkor and Zeiss optics into uncompressed HDMI 8-bit, 4:2:2 HD video in real time, with 1X, 1.5X, or 2.7X telecropping. On the audio side, it features uncompressed stereo 16-bit/48K PCM with live headphone monitoring and manual level controls. I'm also anticipating remote control follow focus with an iPad.

As a bonus, it can take RAW 14-bit, 16-Megapixel full-frame photos @ ISO 12800 as well ;)

"Enjoy full 1080p HD broadcast quality video at 30 or 24 fps in H.264/MPEG-4 AVC HD format, and record clips up to 29 minutes 59 seconds long. You can also see simultaneous Live View output on external monitors and record uncompressed video courtesy of the HDMI terminal."

AVCHD? Hmmm. $6k.

From the 2 videos posted - The video resolution/sharpness and grain quality is still really mushy and there's over sharpened chunky squiggly lines (aliasing and fake details) so everyone loving that HDMI feed out seems like overkill for just barely resolved 720p video.

Maybe the colour or highlight roll off is abit better, but for video it looks like the GH2, D7000, 5D, FS100, are still the better choice bang for buck...

I'm really excited about this, the HDMI out on my D3s looks pretty damn sweet (even though it had some serious banding issues). No doubt Nikon has fixed this with the D4.

Anyone know if the HDMI port on the D4 can output 1080-25P for uncompressed PAL HD acqusition?

Teamed up with a Blackmagic HyperDeck Shuttle for uncompressed capture this combo should yield a very nice 1080P image when shooting in low light at ISO 6400 one would think.....
