D300s announced

Why not all the way to 2GB with a "graceful" countdown to any overheating that occurs?
that's exactly why i'm saying, since they already have a function to prevent overheating due to staying in live view too long it doesn't make sense to limit the recording time for that reason, especially since it leaves you in live view after it stops which causes just as much overheating. as for all the way to 2gb, that might simply be a design choice, it makes it easier both for programmers to implement and for users to control. it would be a major drag to not know exactly when the limit will be reached, don't you think?

But with a 16GB card, you could certainly get 10-15 minutes well before 2GB is hit. But yes, I sure do agree that knowing is better than not knowing when a brick wall is coming your way...unless the brick wall is an illusion. Is 5 minutes purely an arbitrary number?

so with a 4gb card do you get more or less than that? :-)

i can hear them talking at the meeting: all this overheating and file size and european duties stuff is really annoying, how about a 5 minute limit that addresses it all with no effort? nobody will ever need more, right? just like 640k of ram y'know.

I'm getting 2GB SD cards in boxes of Wheaties. ;-)

(As I toss another thinking grenade out the window) The GH1 looks sweeter and sweeter to me and the 60D has me w8ing still..........

it's a point and shoot with built in stubbie cooler that shoots 60fps so you can overcrank those drunken puke scenes. Nikon is all about innovation and giving the consumer what they want!

Is there a website where I can compare a D90 to a D3000 to a D5000? I just want to see what's different in each model. I am looking at getting a good DSLR camera and have been looking at the D90 for a while now but now there are others to consider.

I know what you are talking about. I really want to upgrade my still cameras and before have a movie mode didn't matter, But now I want both

Guys,

Stop the massacre. I found the TRUTH !!!
I sold my D90 et all my lens to buy the MARK II and you know, I absolutely do not regret it. The quality is unbelievable especially after being a D90 holder, and you can correct the 30p problem by using Apple Compressor with all set to BEST.
Hey, why didn't I do that before? Manual Control, splendid codec, full HD, clean picture, beautiful colors, no jello, no stairstepping, man.... just stop it.

You are just hurting yourself guys...

I'm gonna change my nickname...

Nikon Slave is just going crazy. The second a good bit of motion passes the MKii's lens, all of the conversion methods go straight to hell. I've been in and out of all of them and truth be told it's just more reason to wait for a 24p camera.

It's also Jellofied. But the overall image quality of the MKii is quite nice. And coming from a D90 must seem like the holy grail. lol

Well, that's just sad. Did it lose something in the translation maybe?

No absolutely not. There was no translation: I speak swedish. What he's saying is this:

"The limitation is simply due to the file format, which does not support larger files than 2GB. We just translated that to 5 min to make it a little easier to comprehend."

As I said...That's just sad...

At the highest bitrate (2 MB/s) 5 minutes uses 800MB (a static "talking head" shot will use much less than that). This limit could have been set to 12 minutes instead of 5 with 30 seconds of safety time. That would have been a "little easier to comprehend". I can't stand to imagine that a moronic math mistake is the cause of one of my biggest disappointments with the D90 (and I assume the D300s). It's much easier to believe that the Swedish Nikon rep just doesn't know what he's talking about.

It did lose a lot in their translation. Now here is a gr8 candidate for a firmware fix! Unbelievable!

Dont think so, after d300s we should wait at least a half year. ... something FF? or just a mini projector.....?

I don't think 2GB is the limiting factor. As you mentioned, 5 minutes of data at the highest bit rate doesn't equal 2GB. Also, it's pretty easy to store data over 2GB long, just by starting another block (which the Firestore has been doing for many years). I think the problem is the sensor overheats after 5 minutes.

You have to remember that the original target audience for the VDSLR's are photojournalist who need stills and video for their websites - not indie film makers. The 5 minute limitation works fine for most photojournalistic situations. But now the camera companies realize that there is a much bigger market for video, so they're scrambling (I hope) to come up with a solution.

Eventually, I think they'll make cameras that can deliver RAW footage at 24 or 30fps, or higher. High end still photographers are already turning to the Red One camera to get just the right expressions in their pictures. If Nikon and Canon don't want to lose that market, they'd better act fast.

If the D300s is what Nikon has been scrambling for the past year, the Project Manager must look like this.

Just for the record: I don't defend the swedish rep. He's clearly clueless. I'm just referring what he said.
Still, lets hope he is right when he said they have put quite some work into reducing the jello.

Like the most of you I had great expectations waiting for the d300s. I don´t own a d90. Though I shoot stills with my d200 and pretty much loves it. So I´m not planning on leaving Nikon just yet.

If I´m just planning on using the d300s for minor personal "art" projects and filming every day life, will it work out ok right? (I assume the d-movie will be pretty much the same as in d90)

For you in here looking for a RAW-video recorder, the swedish company www.ikonoskop.com are building a new digital version of their super16-based A-Cam. Might be something worth looking into.

Thanks for a great forum by the way...
