D300s announced

Control of shutter in Tripod mode:

And Tripod mode gives you control over the depth of field with a selectable aperture of up to f/16.* (* With exposure modes A and M.)

and maybe a better image?:

EXPEED image processing
Nikon's comprehensive EXPEED image processing utilises an accumulation of sophisticated Nikon technologies to ensure impeccable quality for both still images and movies, while also achieving high-speed processing and low power consumption. It also effectively reduces lateral chromatic aberration.
Nikon’s impressive D-Movie function has undergone various improvements since its launch in 2008...

looks like I made the right decision buying the MKII

No doubt with that. This announcement doesn't even make the Rebel T1i's video mode a little scared. I haven't seen anything about not having manual controls for video - but I also haven't seen anything saying that it did have it so I guess that's a no. If you're looking for video in a DSLR cheaper than the 5D it's still the GH1 and the Rebel T1i at the cheapest end. Nikon is hardly even a player in this race right now. And frankly Pentax probably has a better option than what Nikon's come out with.

It just doesn't make sense. They has almost a year to process this development and make improvements. It's like they didn't do anything. Where Canon drops the Rebel T1i and I'm sure the 60D is going to kill the D300s in terms of video. Canon's H.264 with it's generous bandwidth is an MJpeg killer. It seems like Canon is light years ahead of Nikon right now with this release.

I'm getting more bummed.

The versatile Picture Control adjustment options let you modify the tone and color of your movies with remarkable ease. And Tripod mode gives you control over the depth of field with a selectable aperture of up to f/16.*

I'm assuming the "M" mode is manual.

we've had aperture and picture control from day 1 with the D90

The Pentax K7 looks great up to 75Mbps m-jpeg and it seems to have a lot less jello. Pentax have already released a firmware update for some stills fixes and I've already put in a request to the head of Pentax in the US for manual controls so I think there's a much better chance that the K7 could become a filmmaking beast, it already has a good codec and doesn't overheat as far as I know.

Plus throw in In-body image stabilization for the K7 as well. All your old primes just became Image stabilized. Just need to get manual control.

IS really helps with the jello effect. Check out this video of the T1i (500D) with a Canon IS zoom. The instant the IS is turned on the video goes from total earthquake jello crap to completely useable. Really quite amazing actually.

I'm going to probably decide between the red 2/3'' scarlet or the Nikon D700. Which ever one seems like the better deal and has the most advantages. D300s is pointless if you already have a D90, as they are virtually the same camera. And it's lame of Nikon not to release a firmware update for an unfinished feature that they advertise as a selling point. Where are the full manual controls? Red and Cannon I guess... :/

Settings of Tripod Mode and Handheld Mode were never D90 choices. The info on the Tripod mode would imply that by manually adjusting the f stop for DOF you would have to change shutter speed accordingly to properly adjust the exposure. This feature is totally new and would mean manual controls of aperture and shutter speed. Also the movie samples seem way better than the early samples from the D90.

Picture Control yes, Aperture control no.

Picture Control yes, Aperture control no.

aperture control yes with ai/ai-s lenses

if the data rate is the same and the sensor is the same it's not going to look any better than the D90

since when were you the great defender of all things nikon?

Argh. I think 24p on the D90 was probably just an accident. This is incredibly stupid. Nikon really doesn't have a clue. :Drogar-Smoke(DBG):

I'm just going to bang my head against the desk here for awhile...

don't laugh but I finally got my first HDTV yesterday a 32" bravia and I watched all the stuff I shot on the D90 and it looks really good, not as good as the MKII stuff but it's good.

Oh boy. That is not camera aperture control. It was just a trick. This a totally different thing directly inside the camera controls and settings working directly in conjunction with the lens. Totally new and logic says it should affect the shutter speed directly inside the camera. We have to wait a little and see.

Well, all throughout my 35 years in the photography business I have owned many many Nikon film and digital cameras and it is my favorite brand indeed. I still use my D90 every single day to make money with my photography business. Great stills camera and everyday that passes I get better at it. I never sell my old cameras, I either keep them around or give them away to somebody that might find some use for them, free, because within a short while after I buy them I make my money back. I had high hopes for the D90 movie mode but you all now my feelings on that one as time passed. There seem to be some improvements on this new cam but they won't probably be enough to get one myself because of the movie mode unless it would have improved much more than the D90.

Hmm.. well your D90 must've been in a good mood that day. Sometimes my D90 is in a good mood and goes into a low ISO mode, other times, everything looks like I shot a 35mm telecine with a Hi-8 camcorder. Thought I had the camera down, I've shot about 100GBs of D90 stuffs the past few months. Still, sometimes things look horrible, and really makes me wonder how one of the best DSLRs does not have manual control. The D90 has basically the same control you get on a cell phone video camera. Even scarier, is that Nikon actually promotes this!! Using clips on their site with jumping exposure!!

+1

i think i save my money for a scarlet...

Isn't it great how a company like nikon can keep us all guessing! You'd have thought that after reading all the negative press about the D90 and the positive press on Canon's offerings, they'd wanna get the D300s right, by simply not being so vague about its features and specs.

Nikon, just say if its got manual control and higher bit rates for goodness sake!!

I guess we'll just have to wait until someone does a full test...

I want to believe in the manual mode. Because the codec problem is not so bad and can be corrected with Neat video.

But hey, what about the stair stepping issue, is it still going to be crappy??
