CS5 Launch Event... Ppro silence

Im pumped to the max!! So many deep changes it isnt funny. I am all ready to shell out some cash for the Downloadable upgrade. I just flipped a couple of our editors here to Win 7, which operates CS4 wonderfully already. (huge change from XP,... no crashes in 2 weeks straight!! ....that's what I'm talkin' about!!) So with everything in 64 bit land, I expect great things to come.

AE's new overhaul t is warmly welcomed,.... Who needs to key anymore, just Roto??!! :-)

The instant Background fixer in PS will make the "Ken Burns FX" into childs play!!

CS5 is a major improvement over all, IMHO, it is the most substantial upgrade I have seen since Premiere went to Premiere Pro, and probably the most substantial improvement to the entire Adobe Fleet to date.

(now, if they would just bring back Pagemaker... he he.)

David

BTW, I have several machines here with Quadro FX1700's. Man, I hope they will be able to take advantage of the Cuda/Mercury engine. I just shelled out 300 EA for these a few months back,.. used..... If anyone has any hunch's regarding the 1700 running mercury, I would love to hear some feeback.
The call from the Adobe techs was. They wanted to ship a super stable system right out of the gate, so rather than constantly chasing the cards that got updated as the software was being tested (keep in mind we have been testing for almost a year now) they decided on two solid cards and would ship with support for them, they will add additional cards later down the track but no guarantee which cards will be supported.

Guys, I have Adobe CS3 Mater Collection and skipped CS4 for one main reason.

I have a Sony EX3 and want to do BLU-RAY discs and wasn't too impressed with the Encore Menu options.

Can anyone confirm to me that I can do a popup menu with picture buttons like on Commercial BluRay DVDs?

That is the option that would seal an update for me.
Yep you can do Popup menus in Encore for BluRay, it doesnt support Java animation however.

hi david,

ive been a FCP user and this time around im switching from Design premium to the Production Premium so i can have access to PP and AE. the Mercury feature looks to inviting to pass up. my plan is to give them an honest try out. if i like the interfaces then i will buy the needed GPU to get the max or near max performance.

my question to david is...you appear to have had some hands on with CS5? you said you dont have any of the listed compatible cards but you still see a VASSSSST improvement in performance. could you elaborate on that a little bit. my understanding has been that the only performance boost will come with the specific cards. if youve found otherwise id like to hear what youve found out.

im really interested to see a performance "slope" rating how much more or less each of these cards offer. maybe a place like "batefeats" or others will do that once the product is out. for now though what do you think from your experience?

***scapsinger***, your quote "I prefer Premiere Pro (and the CS package in whole) about a million times over FCP, but everyone knows that FCP eats PPro's lunch every day of the week."

i work in FCP but will be buying the Production Premium so i will have AE and PP. could you elaborate what is the good and bad of PP and how your attracted to it over FCP? eats PPro's lunch...is a powerful statement. do you mean in stability? performance? user interface?

thanks to whoever responds!

Ok it goes like this, the Mercury Playback Engine can work in either software only mode or hardware accelerated. In software only mode you get a massive improvement over a system running CS4 same specs, with hardware you get additional acceleration. I have a short video showing Mercury running on a 13" Macbook, and basically the speed or lack there of of the boot drive a 5400 rpm drive was the main limiting factor in playback, not the CPU. That being said a GTX 285 which goes for about $350 US and even a medium speed computer with say 8 gig of RAM will result in a heck of a lot of RT and full screen 1080p monitoring out via the second port.

Really looking forward to ultra in an nle and the ae roto tool

no one has mentioned this but the video cue point functionality for flash is really going to switch things up and open doors to new creativity and interactive video

screw steve and his draconian mentality – and i'm saying that after being a mac user for 12yrs now

HI Evan, It sounds like you work for Adobe. Irregardless, I just want to tip my hat to the folks at adobe. As we watched the rollout yesterday, I must say that my wife and I were stunned. The integration of all these components in the GrandMaster Super collection is nothing short of mind numbing. Right down to the inclusion of little old ultra. The teamwork involved to make a software package like CS 5 is an enormous accomplishment. When I think of all the code, all the little departments that must collaberate all that code into a single working product, and then someone at the top includes a marketing/media tracking package into the Lot... My goodness!! Now I have had my complaints over the years from bugs that annoy me, (and I think it was my complaint that started this thread) but in all, I think the entire adobe team should give themselves a serious pat on the back. Especially when you think of all the end users like me who build thier own systems, and the millions of scenerio's that can cause a system/software package to not work properly, and yet, with that in mind, to think your software generally runs on just about anything that will boot up with a minimal hitch, ..

Well, you should be proud. Yes, there will always be bugs, yes, some of them will never be addressed until the next version, but in all, what you all do there as a combined team effort to make something like CS5 work as well as it does, is a feat of coded engineering that is, and always has been mind numbing to me. It makes even the largest movie production look simple.

Hats off!!

Have you tried down converting HD footage to SD from Adobe Media Encoder? I was never able to get a very clean image down converting in CS4. How is it in CS5?

My DVD player up and downconverts SD and HD video better than any plug-in I have used to date. Instant HD by Red Giant usually locks up my systems when running in premiere, I have had very limited luck using it in AE. A friend has one of those AJA multi I/O boxes, it does some really nice cross converting, up or down. But, they are also $3k

I could be totally wrong, however, I don't think AME actually does any intelligent "converting" per-se between broadcast quality HD/SD video. It just outputs an image/video/stream in the screen size you request, because that is what you asked it to do. It will change pixel aspects properly, so it makes a square peg fit in a round hole. However, actually using algorithms to properly scale a video with any quality retention does not seem to be an option. I have always assumed Adobe leaves that up to the third party folks to come with a solution.

looked at your demo video and it does look impressive. im on an decked out 8 core macpro so i expect it to fly. will more than likely get the supported GPU as well.

thanks for you help.

@ David Jimerson - the keyer in PPro is Ultra (not Keylight, that's in AE, but available to PPro via Dynamic Link obviously). Just pointing that out so nobody gets confused! :)

Ultra is a great quick-n-easy keyer that left the suite for one generation and is now back and fully integrated. Keylight, on the other hand, is a 3rd party app that is much more robust than Ultra but by no means quick-n-easy. There's also a difference in that Ultra is GPU accelerated wheras AE doesn't have any new acceleration via Mercury.

I could go more in depth if you need to on the PPro stuff....?

Mercury will benefit After Effects or just PPro?

Thanks for the answers scapsinger & Evan.

I knew you could do popup BluRay menus n CS4 but they seemed like a one dimensional/one layer overlay.

I mean selectable seperate picture menus for each chapter for instance on the Casino Royale BlyRay DVD?

Adobe for such a large company make such a poor effort showcasing the features with Video Examples.
You'd think selling software of this nature they would have extreme detail using their own tools to showcase features.

For what it is worth, on Nvidia's site, they do not even suggest the 285 will offer an render acceleration, only the 3 Quadro's. It is strange, they also state that anyone with a quadro will see excelleration.

For those of us looking at the GPU benefits through a financial microscope, I wish they would be more clear. I don't think the right hand is aware of what the left hand is saying sometimes. (Adobe and Nvidia) I guess we will all find out before too long as folks start buying and running PPro.

I am just a lowly Adobe Ambassador, the software development team are the ones who deserve all the credit, they have been spinning the propellers on their hats super fast for this one. The entire BETA test program was amazing, the whole company mantra is JUST GET IT DONE! Lots of features and fixes that just let you do your job. I think they really nailed it :)

Have you checked out the Adobe e-Seminars? They are run using Adobe Connect, they are free and usually go for an hour, you get to see an Adobe professional or Ambassador running your through things in detail and you can ask questions etc. Rather than watching advertising these are the best way to see how features and functions will help you in your day to day work.

Agreed, especially when you think that development for CS5 encompasses over 18 seperate applications multiple teams working around the globe all launching at the same day!

That being said as the CUDA drivers are still BETA and being worked on, I think closer o the release date there will be a lot more difinitive info

Evan, one of the biggest and most persistent problems for every Premiere version up until now has been markedly increased instability when a project gets larger. Do you know if this is addressed in CS5?
