GH4 cropping to 2.39:1?

Does the GH4 display any lines to show different aspect ratios or a 2.39:1 crop? Is anyone thinking of using 4K and cropping to get a 2.35:1 or 2.39:1 aspect ratio and avoiding paying for an anamorphic lens?

Blacking out the top and bottom leaving about 1703 horizontal lines of resolution might help those looking to go wide. 4096x1703 is a lot of resolution and better than 1080p with an anomorphic lens.

not to be *that guy* but spec for 4K scope is 4096x1716 (2.39:1) and for 4K flat presentation it's 3996x2160 (1.85:1). :)

I thought 4096x2160 was a 2.3 crop from full frame with a 1.85 aspect ratio like the original Avatar.

...and does the GH4 have anything for proper framing? Is there a 4K scope mode that only displays those pixels?
This would come in very handy. Guides for shooting in 2.39:1 while still recording in 1.85:1. Anyone know if the GH4 can do that?

FYI the 4096x2160 is Digital Imax standard and it equals 19:10 aka 1:90:1. The same ratio that Skyfall and other Imax films use.

I don't see why it would be hard for the GH4 to have a letterboxed 2.39 mode. Sure, it's trivial to matte later but you could frame in camera and also have less picture area for the codec to have to deal with, which should result in a better picture.

I use Gaffer tape or painters tape to to frame on the LCD. comes off clean, no issues -- blocks the RED RECORD DOT though. I put it below the PEAK-H wording, and above the Audio Meters. Usually I take a snap of the aspect to get it close enough.

Yes - they need to put it in there. They have 1/3s grid, aspect lines should be added - give us some GRID options!!

The GH4's Cinema 4k seems very well geared towards going right to a DCP (digital cinema package).

The GH4's 4096x2160 is same as the standard for 4k DCP. This is the same resolution of Hollywood movies delivered on hard drive to movie theaters. (Movies might also be a 2K DCP, in which case the resolution is 2048×1080.).

These resolutions are both 1.9:1 "Full Container" aspect ratio. While all of the pixels are there in the DCP, the DCP's metadata is going to tell the theater system to screen as either Flat (3996×2160 1.85:1 aspect ratio) or Scope (4096×1716, 2.39:1 aspect ratio) and the projector will crop/scale accordingly.

I created a DCP from a short I shot on an AF-100 last year, and had to upscale slightly to fill the full container. So I was excited that the GH4 shoots 4096x2160 right out of the box.

I'm in post-production on two different GH4 shorts now -- one intended to be projected Flat, the other Scope. I edit in Premiere in a timeline the size of the full container. I made two mattes in Photoshop to mask off the appropriate regions for Scope and Flat projection. I mostly keep them turned off but switch them on periodically to see the final framing.

I too wish that the GH4 had both Flat and Scope guides. When most people start dreaming about firmware upgrades many get very fanciful ideas about raw 4:4:4 and such, but all I really want in a firmware upgrade are more useful guides and a shutter angle lock!
