C300: Cowpunk's Profiles

HI all, While I'm waiting for a new C100 to come (I drowned mine) any reccomendations for one of these profiles to shoot outdoors with only a slight grade needed in post? Cheers Phil

I've found Brian's Cinelog quite nice, very similar to WDR and looks great without a grade.
 
709LOG is great! Skin tones are so much better. You got rid of the greenish skin tones that I was getting with C Log. I think the reds might be a little more present than I like but way better. I'm trying to keep the DR up with C log but just get the skin tones right. C log tends to be greenish with both cameras. Any suggestions on keeping the DR of C Log but correcting for the greenish tone?

thats exactly what I ran into during my first shooting with the C100. I shot with C Log but already during the shooting I found it to be too greenish. Have you solved this? I've DL now the 3 profles from above and will test now the 709Log. But it doesn't look as flat as the C Log... am I right?

Hi Brian, thaks for the CP's !! I have mostly been using cineLOG & I love the color in the cineLOG - as everyone mentions much better skin tones :)

I dont use CLOG as I shoot mainly observational documentary and I find focussing and exposing more problematic on the run. This is where Wide DR is great. I love the highlight handling especially when shooting indoors aS I dont get blown out highlights. But on the cineLOG (as its using a cine1 gamma) the highlights are not handled as nicely.

What would you reccommend to adjust in your cineLOG matrix when changing the gamma to Wide DR?

I have a C300, and that camera doesn't have the Wide DR custom profile included yet. When the November firmware update is released and I can install the WDR gamma and matrix, I will definitely run it through some charts and real world scenerios to customize it! I'll update this thread with a downloadable CP as soon as I can after the firmware is released.

If you could replicate yr cineLOG colors to Wide DR it would be AWESOME as I love Wide DR for indoor shooting as it doesnt blow out windows etc.

If you're shooting with no intent of grading I find that 709LOG has been giving some pleasing results, just chuck a small s-curve on, bump up the sat a little and it looks great.
 
Erik, you might try loading up the C Log (which I haven't used yet), and then referring to this method from another competing forum. It's always worked well for me on other Canon profiles.

I used to think that Custom White Balance does automatically adjust the RGB gain when using a non ideal light source with different amounts of RGB. But it obviously does not. I always had a slight color cast even when using Custom White Balance and lighting with matched color temperature. I tried to fix it using the Color Matrix settings but was never fully satisfied.


Thankfully you mentioned this Custom Picture White Balance adjustablility which I had totally forgotten and overlooked. Using this I was able to set a technically perfect WB under my lighting condtions.

What I did:
After setting Custom White Balance I zoomed in on a neutral grey card so it filled the frame entirely.
Then I switched on the Vector Scope and went to Custom Picture > White Balance > R
If there's a color cast the Vector Scope dot representing the neutral color cast free grey will be off the middle. It was indeed by a tiny, barely visible amount.
I was able to adjust the R, G, B gain until the dot was exactly in the middle."
The neccessary movement of the dot (R-2, G0, B1) was optically very, very tiny but the difference was stunning: a technically perfect color cast free image.

Just wanted to say thanks again, the CineLog works very well for me, and I use it more than any other profile at the moment. The Wide DR was my old go to but in the studio I was getting very frustrated with the results. Switched to CineLog since I had it loaded, and wham, perfect. Kudos.
 
Cowpunk now that you have the new firmware update for the C300 giving you Wide Dr I would recommend checking out Paul Fredricks Custom Profile 'WIDEPF'
Gamma: Wide DR
Gamma Curve: L:5, M:8, H:5
Black-Master Ped:-1
Matrix: Wide DR - Gain:+30, Phase:+3, R-B:+11, G-R:-23, G-B:-14, B-R:-10, B-G:+1

Personally I like to keep the Gamma Cure to the stock one and Master Ped at 0, but i really like Paul's Matix settings - more pleasing natural color.

I would really love to see what you think of this profile :)
 
After doing the C300 firmware update I reinstalled my custom profiles and tried to use the 709LOG and CINEMA_2 profiles, but had a very strange issue. It made a green/turquoise dress turn light blue and purple turn to dark blue. I then tested dark green and got blue. I never noticed this until today so I don't know if this was the case before. I ended up using WIDE_DR and the color balance was spot on.
Anyone else have this experience? Thanks goodness for my Panasonic broadcast monitor or I would have been in trouble. Well maybe not since I caught it on the C300 LCD first.

Erik, I've recently started noticing the same thing - and I'm also finding WDR to be spot on with color and looking really great. Canon is certainly improving their color science.
