C300: Cowpunk's Profiles

Hey guys - sorry I didn't get the update up last night like I promised. Work went super late, and now I'm back on set 8 hours later. I'm probably not going to be able to post the update for a week as my c300 is rented out. I made the adjustments on a rented cam that I had to return last night, and I want to be absolutely sure the profile is as optimized as possible before I release it.

in the mean time, for less orangey reds, adjust the B-R setting to taste in the color matrix section if you need more accurate red.

Cowpunk, I have to admit I am still using your C_mojo profile and getting a great response from clients. I haven't tried your new profiles yet (just upgraded firmware to 1.0.8.1.00), but I find it troubling that phase needs to be adjusted in +14 to +18 range. +18 is as far as the adjustment goes (in the + direction). That the C300 requires such extreme phase adjustment makes me concerned about the basic colorimetry of the camera. Thanks for sharing your efforts to make the C300 look great.

Does anyone have any custom profiles using the C100 Wide DR gamma? The cine one on here is great but it would be awesome to use a gamma that uses all the DR available.

Cheers,

Phil

Paul you need to go to 1.0.8 to have the problem solved. You most likely know this but just wanted to let others know to not just update to 1.0.7.

no thread here for the first officially released C300 firmware?

so is it confirmed, colorimetry changed again noticably?

Even MORE custom profiles

Even MORE custom profiles

I know it seems like I'm throwing these out there like candy, but they all serve a purpose (at least, for me). For this batch, particularly, I wanted to base a set of custom profiles on the slightly remapped Canon Log profile that the new firmware gives the C300. In my opinion, the Canon Log color matrix gives the prettiest colors and best looking skin tone available on the C-series cameras, and these profiles are meant to take advantage of that. At the same time, there are definitely some inaccuracies in the color representation of certain primaries, and I tried to compensate for that as much as possible in these CP's as well.

The profiles are described below:

709LOG
- video gamma profile that uses adjusted Canon Log color matrix. Looks quite similar to shooting Log + View Assist, but without the increased dynamic range that the log gamma provides.

cineLOG - Similar to above but with the cine1 gamma profile; more muted colors and flatter curve with a bit more dynamic range.

CINEMA.2 - A subtly adjusted CINEMA profile that corrects some of the color skews inherent in the native profile. Yellows are less green, greens are less cyan. Skin is just very slightly warmer. Takes full advantage of Canon's log gamma dynamic range, and looks great in View Assist and with Canon's LUT applied.

thank you Brian for the profiles! i have a few questions if u dont mind:
- the CPs from here https://docs.google.com/document/d/1hU4LNgTUjqw6hPR9UvlDzmo7CRUDjWISGqLj4-EVdtw/edit?pli=1 - are out of date now after the new soft update from canon? or some are still good?
- what would be the best log? - is it CINEMA.2 ? the one that has max dynamic range?

about that alexa settings? from here http://provideocoalition.com/aadams/story/color-matching-a-canon-c300-to-an-arri-alexa/P3
i wonder what gamma is used? color matrix is eos, but gamma? is it same? when the guy speaks about "gain" is it gain in color matrix?

Those are all still good, since they were designed for use with remapped color palette of new firmware. They just give a different look from these.

Whichever one looks best to you! I've found that I really prefer skin tone from the Canon Log color matrix, so I'll likely use CINEMA.2 as my log profile from here on out. It will have same dynamic range capability as the native CINEMA profile.

Art typically likes to use the cine1 gamma, so I would imagine that is what he designed these with. When he talks about gain, he is referring to the setting within the color matrix menu. It basically controls overall saturation of the colors.
