Core 2 Duo Build Project: 2007

USLatinContent,
Since you're familiar with the OC forums: Can you OC a dual core E6600 to 3-3.5GZ without much trouble on say, a DS3 board? I'm just wondering what would be "safe" with stock cooling.
Thanks for your help.

An E6600 on a DS3 would give you a "sure thing" 3.2GHz, a "most likely" 3.4GHz and a "possibe" 3.6GHz... then again that's with a good PSU and a good CPU cooler... Expect to spend about $100 on both of the other items... If you got into a DS3 you'd be limited with the amount of control you'd have on the RAM OC, which means to ensure being able to use a high clock you'd need RAM that can function at a the frequency you'd need it to run... you can always lower the timings on your RAM so it will take faster speed but you still need to be sure that the RAM will actually post at whatever frequencies you expect to be hitting with your best case scenario OCs so you are not limited by it...
I thing the multiplier for the 6600 is x9 which helps... regardless, getting something like G.Skill HZ's which go for $135 for a pair of 1GB is always a good way to go, and quite impossible to pass up, they use amazing modules and will work at the lowest timings you'd get from the competition...

If you are not looking at OS-X I'd look at ASUS... namely their 650i board which is going for the same about as the DS3 and there are hundreds of people OC'ing it with exact (or slightly better) results, and it has more control over your RAM OC... however the expansion ports are completely different... and if you need the same stuff as Kholi got you'd probably not be able to fit it all... you want to look at what you want to put on it first, then sound how many PCI ports, how many PCI-E x1 ports you'd need and if you need any more faster PCI-E ports than the single one most people need for a single video-card... unless you make your living as a CC'ed with Magic Bullet or other GPU intensive apps you won't need to get two Video Cards, even so, the 8800 GTS 640MB promises to give me real-time CC with Vegas and Magic Bullet... (we'll find out waaaaaay before Kholi is done posting for the first time, rofl)

I am passing out, btw, so let's talk about it more when I am coherent... lol

I will have my modified sound card in the computer by Friday (latest by Monday), and my 640MB 8800GTS by tomorrow!

Pshhh...

Now just let me figure out what my Core 2 Quad temps are supposed to be, redo the fan and thermal grease tonight, and move to the hardest part of all.

And yeah, that does say 2.6ghz. Silly me.

Thanks USLC.
I don't need 2 x16 video slots...probably be using a single 7900 or similar.
No MB stuff; I primarily do 30 second spots, lots of sub renders of elements and 10-14 layers of video in Vegas. I'm currently on an old P4 1.8 w/Soyo motherboard...4 + years old.
I'll check that Asus board.
Thanks again,

Boyo these wires need work! After I redo the heatsink of course.

So tired...

Tell me about it. I have thin fingers so I didn't bother removing the motherboard to bolt it down, but I'll have to do that today because my temps are innacurate.

Gotta redo the thermal! But everything works, so I'm pretty happy. Fine tuning the hardware, hiding the wires, then partioning HDDs to FAT32.

temps look fine to me. what do you think is wrong?

They're actually too high @ idle for my setup. They might've been fine for a stock cooler, but aftermarket I'm thinking they should be idling @ 30's or so.

Going to just reinstall the fan tonight. =\

First of all, what's your room-temp? Cause without it your temp reads mean nothing... You know what I mean... Is it cool in your home?
Your idles seem to be 38 36 36 38 Celsius and I'd say that is on the money... don't re-seat the cooler until you check LOAD temps... ORTHOS CPU testing or OTTC CPU testing are excellent for this... but I'd also recommend running Speed Fan with the Charts tab showing the temps of all four cores cause charts help figure out when you topped out without having to keep a constant eye on the ever-changing Core Temp read (which should be your most accurate temp read)... Also, do not expect the temps posted on threads yet till you've had it for about a month or so cause the Artic Silver needs to bake in for 200 hs... You should get a 3-5 degree drop...

I LOVE SEEING FOUR CORE TEMPS!!! sexy time!

That fan is huge, it is a 120mm right? Great cooler btw!

Nice looking case!

Please tell me you did not buy an IDE optical... I am 99% sure that was your old one though :) I'd get an ultra-thin IDE from Fry's (for $5-$10) cause it is going to be a pain to manage that IDE to keep it from killing your airflow...

Keep us updated! IT IS QUAD TIME BABY!!!

BTW, I got my 640MB GTS and it gives me about 50fps higher on ATItools.

I also got my 7600GT back but the 24" LCD is at a friends' where I built my ROWE CINE dolly and aaalmost finished the monitor stand... (pics to come).

Also, I got my 320GB perpendicular Seagates and the "Baby-Blue" younger broder of the "Puke-Green" enclosure... installing the eSATA card now...

Nice. Glad you got your 8800. get your brag on in the OCN forums y0.

I'm over there right now troubleshooting my Quad with Knitelife. Temps have gotten better since the reseat, figured out a detrimental fan issue.

Working on a mild clock RIGHT now.

Hey, you gut a nice thread going in OCN, so far I saw you re-seated and got 35 34 34 35 idle... and 47 47 47 49 LOAD!!!! nice!!! you should be practically done! next step OC and wait for the AS to bake!

OC IT MAN!!! YEAH!!!!

Hey, if you get a 3.2GHz I'll just might offer you current prices for the Q6600 when you go native...

Dude... that's not great temps yet... that suks... your case does need better airflow... an 8-0mm intake is like not having an intake... try to see how you'd be able to get a 120mm on-to the side panel at least... I have some Yate Loon 120mm wich are super quiet and move a lot of air... like 40+ CMF... that should work... I didn't read about your cooler, but 8mm pipes are going to be the new thing, and you said it cot amazing reviews, and people are calling it "one of the new top guns" and crap like that... so it really makes no sense other that if you are not running the AC and your windows are shut (only at night time during the summer!)...

I've read in a few places that 70c is tolerable for Quads, but I honestly do not know if that's true. If I can keep it under 60c I'll be satisfied.

But that might mean a 2.8ghz on air if I can't get it all flowing right.

I believe I said something about cases in the beginning didn't I? lol

All Duos are rated at 61C by Intel but if you know for sure that Quads are rated higher (must be from Intel's site) then you'd want to stay at 60C LOAD... I am quite positive they are rated the same though.

If you can RMA that nice cooler of yours and get a Tuniq you might be in a different ball game because the TT blows wither up or towards the back and aligns the air-flow with most case fans... that way you don't raise the case temperature...

Take a look at your video-card's exhaust, if the fancy cooling on it doesn't dump any hot air into the case you should be glad cause those get way hotter... if not look at PCI-slot blowers like the Antec blower ($10) which I bought for my 8800 because of these little slots in the plastic air tunnel which otherwise would dump a bunch of 70C air back in...

An other case modification to consider would be adding a 120mm (or bigger) to the top of your case... eliminating lingering air that may rise. BTW you barely hear the CPU coler's fan even when blowing at 100% because it is a 120mm, I can hardly hear my 200mm at all when I put my ear right up against it. And since you'd have to cut your own hole into the case then might as well go quiet for the top. But you mostly have to consider adding more intake... preferably from down low and where it would create a nice flow towards the exhausts while going over the needed components... HDD boxes usually take 120mm and two of them sounds about right , especially cause the HDDs would stay super-cool (and safer) and they'd slow down the air a tad.

My Thecus is working and the drives get sooooooo hot!!!
The air-flow in it is bull-s!@#$... but if plugs and plays, and I get about 46MB/s our of a RAID1 which while not great it is 10MB/s higher than the POS Western... I wish you guys would clock yours with HDtach so we can compare the "Baby blue" to the "Puke Green"...

The Video Card is in and since I can't do 1080 1:1 CC previews till I get the LCD back I don't know if it does away with the choppiness but it does seem a tad better...

Oh! I also get my 3rd and 4th GB of RAM today, I had a promo code that brought it down to $105 from $125!!! And I am worried about the modules being changed on the HZs or it being discontinued... just want to make sure I have my 4GB that will OC the same... and I guess I might have paid $40 extra for it by getting it now instead of 4-5 months from now when Vegas 8 is out...

MY black enclosure runs SUPER cool. Cannot feel any heat on it at all...though it only runs RAID 0, or JBOD *&^%$!!!

I am thinking that if the Baby-Blue is as fast as the Puke-Green I'll go ahead and cut holes into the sides for intake fans... I wish there was a tad more space though so I could fit an 80mm at least... the HDDs are very close to each other too... not a good design, but I guess that's what I payed for, they must have been trying to keep is small...

Cool thanks. I'm going to reseat again to see what I get. I think it's user error, not hardware.
