Copying files from P2 Card to a Mac?

Is it possible to copy files from a P2 card to a mac without ingesting them into final Cut Pro and than later ingesting the file that was copied to the desktop of the mac into FCP?

I want to use a mac without FCP to offload video from P2 cards while in the field.

Absolutely. In fact that is (was?) the recommended procedure from Apple -- copy the P2 card contents first, and ingest separately.

So, to do this, can I simply get the drivers to allow the the mac or pc to recognize the P2 card and get the USB PCMIA reader to copy the files from the card to the computer? Is there anything else that I should be aware of?

Doesn't matter how you get the data to your Mac, you're basically talking about copying a bunch of files. You mount the card and drag files between drives.

You can connect the camera using a Firewire cable to a Mac, using a USB cable to a PC, or you can insert the P2 card directly into a PCMCIA/PC Card slot. On systems with an ExpressCard slot, you can use the Duel Systems PCMCIA-to-ExpressCard adapter.

There isn't a USB PCMCIA reader that will ingest p2 cards. None exist.

You have to mount the p2 card in cam in the firewire mode, p2 store, PowerBook with PC Cardbus slot, or MBP with duel adapter.

Several exist, they're just not inexpensive.

The PCD20 is a USB PCMCIA/P2 reader. The P2 Store and P2 Gear and all P2 cameras can all be used as USB P2 card readers.

None of the cheap little adapters will ever work. If it's gonna work with P2 it has to be specifically designed to do so, and it would loudly trumpet that fact in its marketing. If it doesn't say specifically that it's P2-compatible, it isn't.
