Coollights LED

By the way Matt, I just noticed on your picture that the gels were clipped to the barndoors. You know there's a generous amount of room just behind the barndoors for some gels to slip right in, no clips needed as long as they are trimmed to just the right width which would be about 9.4". Length can also be about 9.4 or 9.5". Makes a very neat looking setup.

That's exactly what I ended up doing. Used two of the 600's along with a couple CDM's in a few scenes I shot last weekend and they worked beautifully together... All I can say is that I loved being able to use the dimmers to dial in precisely how much fill light I wanted.

Leo:

Did you use any half minus green on them? Dean Sensui very generously did some color meter readings on the 600s and he reported and I concur that minus half green brings the light right in line with other daylight sources, I mixed with fluorescents and the look was superb.

These are rockin lights, aren't they. I am loving them.

I did have 1/2 minus green filters on hand but the particular scene was shot in a dim warehouse and I decided I liked the overall look without them. The whole scene will be CC'd and stylized anyway...

I did test the lights before using them with the 1/2 minus green filters along with some flos and the CDM's and found that they mixed perfectly. If you compare the 600's with and without the filters, you can instantly see the slight greenish tinge the native LED's have.

Everyone on the set thought they were a great addition to have in a lighting arsenal...

Its interesting that I get all kinds of reports from different people about what works for them. Some feel 1/8 minusgreen is enough, others 1/4 and many need the 1/2. I've tried all three myself and I like the 1/4 personally. Hehe, if there was a 1/3 minus green that might even be the best of all.

I think we're going to have some good followups, smaller and larger coming up later this year. For those that are positive LED is the way they want to go, it will be possible to have an all LED kit of different sizes for different jobs.

Richard:

I think an all LED kit is the dream of a lot of us ;-) Cool, ultra portable, low power/DC powered, daylight, what's not to love?

Looking forward to seeing what you can pull out of your hat, I know it will be awesome. Hope the 600s are selling well.

i ordered 3 of these (2 floods + 1 spot daylights) as my 1st lights set

Yes they're going fast. Hopefully we won't be out of stock too long on them like we have been on some other items in the past.

Alexander, I got some minus green at Filmtools.com, which is not all that far from you I believe. If I'm not mistaken you can also find it at B&H as well as filmandvideolighting.com.

We have been ordering samples of thin acrylic panels tinted like a 1/4 or 1/2 minus green to see how well they behave and transmit light. If it tests out well, that'll be our filter accessory solution which will also provide protection over the LEDs. Maybe we can also supply a couple of CTOs and some other common colors in that optional kit. Having a pack like that will make color correction and sfx tinting pretty painless.

thank u!

this would be awesome

I agree it would too, so handy to have. These little projects like scrims or filters should be so easy but there are all kinds of barriers to getting it done.

For instance, its just getting past their minimum order for custom colors which would give us minus green panels in supply till the year 2050, long past when LEDs (or whatever we end up using by then) will have evolved to the point they don't need it any more. ;-(

Hey guys, I've been off the map on a project for the last 3 months, and have not been able to log into DVXuser.

So what has happened to direct so many shooters to daylight 5600k lighting?

5600K is nothing new and many users prefer it because it is more versatile and less limiting than 3200k lighting. Think about it, with 3200k lighting, any room you shoot in with any daylight streaming in anywhere, the daylight shows up as blue. Daylight is much higher in strength than man made lighting so it is difficult to overpower or to seal out around shades, drapes and blinds. Many rooms have no shades, drapes or blinds. If you are shooting in a room with views out of the windows, you really will have a much easier job of balancing the lighting in the scene with daylight balanced lighting.

Many people feel that their camera natively provide a more accurate and pleasing image at the 5600k preset than at the 3200k. Daylight balanced lighting works in more situations than 3200k does, and is therefore, more desirable to the average user.

Makes sense.

I guess over time the availability of incandescent lights will begin to fade away due to the energy regulation.

So, is our future bright or dim???? ;)

If one LED should go out, we just desolder the LED and replace it. It doesn't happen all that often though and they are expected in general to have a very long life.

Discount still active

Discount still active

Hey Richard,

I know it's been a long time but please let me know whether you're still offering a discount on the LED600 for DVXUser. I for one could really use it. Thanks for the great service you offer all of us here.

Hi Derek,

The discount ended at the end of April, the current price is $425 which is about $25 more than with the discount. Its still an incredible bargain considering what all you get with it and what you can do with it. Hope this helps.

Yes, from everything I've read in this thread I can tell I'm going to be very happy with it. Thanks for your quick response.
