Vegas 7.0 101: How do you upload footage?

I just started with this and for the life of me I cannot get the footage I shot from the camera to Vegas 7.

Am I stupid or just missing something?

DVX100B.

I just don't know how to get the footage from the camera into the program. I have it hooked up via Firewire... I have looked at what I think is all the options but I can't find the 6 seconds of test footage I shot...

Any help?

What have you done?

Go to File/Capture Video.

Choose "Use external video capture application" from the box which then pops up.

If you have the DVX connected properly (and turned on), you should be able to click the "play" button in the capture program and see your footage. Can you do this?

If so, rewind to the part where you want to capture, and then click "capture." Click stop when you're done.

That's the most rudimentary way of going about it.

Also, you can define where your captured clips get stored by going to, in the capture program, Options>Preferences>Disk Management.

Thanks!

That is exactly what I needed.

Do I need to seperate the scenes this way or can I upload them together and split them up with Vegas afterwards?

As long as you have scene detection enabled, it should automatically make a separate clip for every time you start/stopped the camera.

Is scene detection part of the camera or Vegas? And how do I make sure I have that set-up?

Also you referred to options -> preference -> disk management to choose where I want to dump my clips, but there is no disk management tab. At least not on my copy of Vegas.

1) Scene detection will be set up by default, so if you haven't disabled it, it's enabled.

2) The Options>Preferences>Disk Management tab is not in Vegas; it's in the capture program.

New Question:

I am editing some footage I shot but somehow there is a Fade on it (the normal "X" shape) and I don't know how to take it off fade.

Any help?

You mean, make it a normal cut?

You have drag the edge of one of the clips (or the edges of both) so that the clips don't overlap at all. Or, slide one of the clips over.

If you're looking to make it a different kind of transition, you go to the transitions window, find the one you want, and drag it into the "X".

if it is a single clip, you can fade in and out by moving the little triangle i have circled in this photo.

I now have a 5 minute short edited and such, but for the life of me I can't export/output it so that I can view it out of Vegas 7...

I promise (or more like I hope) this will be my last question on the subject...

Any help?

mpg, the first time, then avi... I got sound and picture on avi, but it was incredibly jerky (it locked up my windows media player) and it was over 11 gigs.

Its only a 5 minute short, I just need to output it with sound at a reasonable size.

When you render, (if I remember correctly) there should be a box you can check to include the audio stream.

It only does that on certain ones (Avi being one of them)

Do you know if one of them outputs a smaller file size or should I be looking at 11 gigs for a file that is 5 minutes long?
