Converting Footage to Work with fcp?

With the 5d II I always have to convert my footage into something that works with final cut like prores,
do you also need to do this with the 7D?

The 7D shoots H.264 .MOV files. So yes you can drag them right into FCP and start cutting if you want to. However, you'll get better performance and image quality by converting to ProRes first.

I'm editing on an old Power Pc are there any alternatives to pro-res for non intel macs? I've heard intermeate codec but Its a very long trans code

Sorry- that's kinda the way it goes. AIC would be good or Cineform- but that's not cheap.

Curious how do you convert to Pro-Res, I've only used DVCPROHD before...so I've not had to convert say RED footage etc. into pro-res - anyone have a good youtube or whitepaper tutorial?

Just trying to be a bit more clear - I know how to get the footage into compressor and convert to pro-res, I'm just not sure which version to use (pro-res progressive high-quality...or...what?!) and then when I output for use on DVD or web etc. I imagine I just use "export using quicktime conversion" and go with whatever file type I need right...do I lose anything going from the h.264 to the pro-res (whichever version you end up telling me is best to use)?

Thanks!
Mark.

Use Mpegstream clip and batch convert all your footage to ProRes 422LT

Launch MPEG Streamclip
>list >batch list (Apple + B)
>drag and drop your footage
>export to quicktime
>choose location of where you want to save it
From the MPEG Streamclip - Movie Exporter menu
>choose Apple ProRes 422LT
>quality to 100%
>uncheck interlace scaling
>to batch
>go

Thanks for the detailed reply Ben - that's the kind of stuff I was looking for - I'm a little leary of not using compressor though - can anyone post a workflow for compressor...and can someone explain what MPEG Streamclip is...it just looks unsupported and kind of "hack-y" - I'd rather stick with a software package I bought and can get support for.

It looks really scary but it's a great program I was converting footage and compressor kept crashing Mpeg did it better and faster....

Open the h.264 file in the QT Pro player or in Compressor and elect your output or use a Compressor preset.

Pretty simple to do.

Right, I mean I get the gist of it, but I'm not sure which pro-res codec to use...there's like a million different versions of them in Compressor (I also use Avid and assume I would use DnXHD - but again, several different numbers and I don't know which means which...I'm not a codec person!)
