Congrats on your purchase. I want to get an HMC for the exact same reasons and i'm debating if it's too much camera for it. But like you said, they're only kids once and why not have the best video possible?
Just gotta pull the trigger.

Ohh.. It's too much camera for family stuff... But I want the best possible images and I find myself getting frustrated with the lack of manual controls on the consumer models..
I'd really like to maybe help out with some weddings with it too.. Maybe someone in Orlando will let me tag along one weekend and shot some stuff.
But it's mainly for the kids family stuff.. Would like to maybe do some legacy interviewing with the grandparents, etc. You know stuff like that.. I guess you can say that I am the family "archivist"..
I will say this. Once you start using it, make sure you have a *sound* backup plan. No excuses and no cutting corners.
My backup plan consists of everything locally at the house on a RAID array and then that RAID array is sync'd to a external backup drive. I have two of these drives and one is always in the safety deposit box. I swap them out every two weeks or so..
The pictures and videos on that drive are priceless. Need to make sure they are kept safe. The nice thing about digital is it is easy to make multiple copies..

ps. let me know if you know anyone that knows CF and wants a freelance gig... Need a website fixed, few quarks. Once that is done we are going to upgrade them all to php etc. I just don't have the time to get into CF (and learn it).
Have you tried posting a project on iFreelance or some of the other sites. I've always had good luck with that.

Heh. For me, half of it is because I enjoy things like this. half of it is because I want to record and preserve family memories..
