Considering purchase.

Hello,

Looking to take my video stuff to the next level.. I'm not a pro, but enjoy doing family videos, kids, etc. Considering purchase of the HMC150 for this. Right now I use a consumer Sony AVCHD camera (HDR-SR7) but have never been happy with the overall quality and lack of manual controls.. It is nice, but nothing like the video I am seeing out of the HMC150.. I also want to do some short videos to post online for my wife's dental practice. Some marketing stuff.

Use a Mac Pro w/ Final Cut Pro.. So won't be a problem with editing..

Any suggestions on places to Purchase? Thinking about just doing through Amazon since I have some gift cards there.. Even if BH is a bit cheaper.

Should I pull the trigger?

Do it! Seems like a lot of camera for the kids, but its worth every penny. We purchased ours from B&H - we also were close to getting scammed by some e-tailer from Brooklyn beforehand so be careful...

ALWAYS search: "company name reviews" or "company name scam" in Google to see whats really going on...

I don't think you will regret picking up this camera. You will love the manual controls and the panny look. Plus you are already familiar with the avchd workflow and that's half the battle.

If you have amazon giftcards that will take you way below the b&h price than give that a shot but if it's only a few bucks I would go with b&h or another well know authorized dealer. I have heard a few people on here complaining about their amazon purchase that was through Wilouhbys I believe so do a little research first.

Good luck.

I tend to agree that it is a lot of camera for the kids, but the way that I look at they are only kids once and I want to capture the best possible image. I have a nice still camera (D700) and want the same type quality in the video..

Amazon sells it direct (w/ Prime). so it's not sold "through" amazon.. B&H has it for like $150 less or so.. but I have like $800 in amazon gift cards just waiting. I figure I can sell my HDR-SR8 for another few hundred and still come out ok..

Need to get approval from the wife. I think I'll ask her tonight after she falls asleep.. :-)

Thanks for the offer, its a good idea to have that lined up just in case a client needs it...

So that means you made your decision?

I think so. It was looking hard at the JVC before this one, but I really think this is the better camera. The JVC is nice with the QT (FCP work flow), but I don't think working with AVCHD is all that difficult and the Panny has the larger CCD, etc. The dual card slots is nice on the JVC, but really not needed. You know when you are going to run out and change cards just like you change tapes.

You do weddings full time or do you have a day job?

I wish weddings were all I had to do full time. I dabble in most types of video production and web development to pay the bills.

Same here actually. Software development to pay the bills. No web frontend stuff though. Just backend and windows development.

Was wondering why you would pick the GH1, or T1i over the HMC40?

It came down to the needs and availability of whats out there right now... We needed a strong image, good low light, DOF and something that would be comparable (at least in 720/30p) to the HMC.

I talked more about it here: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=178188

The GH1 would have been my ideal choice I think, but its unavailable.

We had all these things covered with 2 hmc150's:
long record times
audio / xlr

Plus I'm still skeptical of the 1/4 CMOS sensors of the 40... Oh yeah, VSLRs have interchangeable lenses, probably the best feature.

Tomorrow, nice. Congrats!

ps. let me know if you know anyone that knows CF and wants a freelance gig... Need a website fixed, few quarks. Once that is done we are going to upgrade them all to php etc. I just don't have the time to get into CF (and learn it).
